RICHMOND, Va. -- A 5.1 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of Virginia and North Carolina Sunday morning. There have been no immediate reports of damage, nor injuries. The earthquake was recorded at 8:07 a.m. and was centered near the state line in Sparta, North Carolina, about 300 miles southwest of Richmond.Sunday's earthquake is one of the biggest to impact Virginia since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake centered in Mineral, Virginia on August 23, 2011. And the largest earthquake in North Carolina since a 5.2 earthquake in 1916."According to the U.S. Geological Survey database, the 5.1 magnitude earthquake near Sparta this morning is the second strongest earthquake to occur in North Carolina 1900," the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg Office wrote on Twitter. "The strongest was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake near Skyland, North Carolina in February 1916."The 5.1 magnitude earthquake was preceded by multiple, smaller "foreshocks" on Saturday.Multiple aftershocks are expected over the next few weeks. The USGS forecasted a 4 percent chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5.1.This story originally reported by Mike Stone on wtvr.com. 1203

After nearly six months of investigations, the defense legal team released more than 1,200 graphic evidence photos from inside and outside Breonna Taylor's Louisville apartment.Taylor was shot five times March 13, 2020, while Louisville Metro Police Department officers carried out a no-knock warrant for a drug investigation. Many of the photos were too graphic to show but those released paint a picture of what happened during the raid:Nearly a dozen shell casings are seen scattered across the apartment parking lot; dozens more in the alcove in front of Taylor's apartment which is where LMPD Officer Brett Hankinson's termination letter states he fired 10 rounds through a covered patio door and window.Inside Taylor's apartment, several photos displayed her belongings pierced with bullet holes: her clock, shower, chairs, mirrors, cabinets, pots, inside drawers, shoes as well as walls and ceilings that back up to her neighbors. In Taylor's room, a photo showed a gun under her bed that was legally owned by her boyfriend Kenneth Walker who was with her that night. Walker said he fired one shot when he thought someone was breaking in.A photo of LMPD Officer Anthony James revealed he was wearing a body camera. LMPD previously said no body camera video existed as they said officers were not wearing cameras.Another photo displayed a letter to Taylor from her ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover. He was the person named on the warrant that LMPD used to enter Taylor's apartment. But, he was arrested just minutes earlier during a raid at another location as part of the same drug investigation. PARADISE, Calif. – Parts of California are going dark and some people are taking it personally. “It’s like a slap in the face,” said Paradise, California, resident Jonathan Valdez. “It’s like we have to keep suffering over and over again.” Valdez stocked up on gas for his generators after Pacific Gas and Electric warned it could shut off power to almost 200,000 people across the state in an attempt to lower the risks of wildfires. “Gas went up so I’m kind of sweating it a little bit,” Valdez said. “It’s another extra dollar for each can and we have to do this every day.” Several businesses say the power shutdowns have hurt their sales. “People can’t work, people can’t pay their bills,” said a worker at the local gas station. “And people up here in California, we live paycheck to paycheck.” The employee says the gas station lost products without electricity. She added many feel in the Northern California community that they’re being targeted by the power company. “A lot of people think they’re doing it to get back at the people of Paradise,” she said. Getting back because several people are now suing PG&E after investigations found their equipment started the Camp Fire – the most expensive and deadly wildfire in California history. Paul Moreno of PG&E says these planned power outages aren’t happening out of revenge – they are happening to keep cities and citizens safe. “No. No. There’s nothing like that. This is being done for public safety,” Moreno said. “Last time we did a public safety power shutoff, we found 100 cases of damage caused by high winds to our powerlines any number of those could have started a fire. With the high winds it could have been catastrophic.” These potentially catastrophic conditions have first responders on high alert. “It’s really flammable and fire is really dynamic,” said Rick Carhart of Cal Fire Butte County. Carhart says Cal Fire has increased staffing after issuing a Red Flag Warning – adding people need to take safety into their own hands. "You need to have 10 feet of an area around the generator down to bare dirt," he said. Having a plan in place, just like the local schools. After closing classes for three days during another power shutoff, Paradise Junior and High Schools aren’t taking any chances this time. Staff will use lanterns to light classes and plan on running generators to access the internet. “That may sound strange, but we ran a school out of a hardware store last year,” said Larry Johnson, Principal at Paradise Junior & Senior High School. “So, a couple of lanterns, you know, we got this.” Town officials, however, aren’t as optimistic. “There’s not a lot we can do about it,” said Paradise Mayor Jody Jones. “We don’t even have generators that the town has.” Jones isn’t pleased with PG&E. And after seeing much of her city go up in flames, she’s now calling them out – saying PG&E should have spent more money on maintenance. “I think there’s a lot of evidence that they haven’t been doing the maintenance that they need to do doing,” she said. “I wish that they would have invested in their system.” When the power did go out in Paradise, some had their own systems in place. Nicki Jones of Nic’s Food, Beer and Wine bought a generator to keep her business up and running. Saying it’s an investment for both her and her customers. “We’re able to serve the community,” she said. “We open up at 7 a.m. We serve coffee and we have a gathering place for the community.” Those looking to travel out of this community, however, may have a hard time. “Everything else is closed,” a local man said. “So, I’m going to have to get gas in Chico.” Back at the local gas station, people found the doors chained up and pumps shutdown. “It’s a big inconvenience going down to Chico,” the man said. “Everything in Magalia is closed and everything in Paradise is closed.” But despite the hardships, people are staying positive during these planned power shutoffs and seeing light in this time of darkness.“We’re Paradise strong,” Jody Jones said. “We’re pioneers. We can do it.” 4113

Many parents are wondering how schools could look different if they reopen in the fall. The Pima County, Arizona, superintendent toured a charter school today. The principal of Da Vinci Tree Academy invited Dustin Williams to look at a preliminary model that follows CDC guidelines. Williams says, “I saw the partitions up and I said, Whoa. I haven't seen a model like that. This is one of the first models I've seen in class. But I have to accept we're in unprecedented times and safety has to be paramount for everybody.” <div class="Figure-credit" itemprop="author">KGUN 906

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Just before the lunch rush at one New Orleans restaurant, the hottest spot is the kitchen. The place is Café Reconcile: a restaurant that caters to both customers and its employees. “It’s not your typical job. It’s not the typical restaurant,” said Chef Eugene Charles Temple, Jr. “We come in here to change lives.” The café specializes in teaching culinary skills to disadvantaged young people, by training them to take on all aspects of restaurant work. It goes far beyond that, though. The café offers counseling and teaches classes on life skills – like how to open a bank account. “No one’s forcing them to come here,” said Gerald Duhon, Executive Director of Café Reconcile. “They want a change in their life.” Ahmaad Lott felt that first-hand. “To be honest, you know, I wasn’t in a great situation,” Lott said. Several years ago, he was facing mental health issues. Lott got help and eventually rose through the ranks at Café Reconcile to become a trainer to others dealing with similar circumstances. “That was me a few years ago,” Lott said. “I barely know this young person, but to know their story resonates to my story so deeply, and in a way that, you know, we can share our experiences and grow together.” Several thousand young people have graduated from Café Reconcile since it began more than two decades ago. However, the issue of “disconnected youth” is not limited to New Orleans. A 2014 Tulane University study found that, across the country, there are 6.7 million disconnected youth, costing the U.S. economy billion a year in lost tax revenues and needed social services. “The way we look at it is our young people don’t have anything wrong with them,” Duhon said. “What they have that many young people do not have is support—and particularly support around the barriers that are in their life.” It’s a support for which Ahmaad Lott says he’s grateful. “That gave me that avenue, that gave me that channel to really make something of myself,” he said. Lott has now also worked in a five-star restaurant in the French Quarter, following in the footsteps of thousands of others who found refuge at Reconcile.
