BEIJING, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study has shown that gene therapy can reduce symptoms in patients with Parkinson's, media reports said Thursday.The study, published in the journal Lancet Neurology, is the first to show positive results in a test of gene therapy against a sham operation in 45 U.S. Parkinson's patients.The treated group showed a 23.1 percent improvement on a scale of Parkinson's symptoms six months after treatment, compared to a 12.7 percent improvement for patients who received sham surgery, according to the published research."Gene therapy is no longer just a theory," said Michael Kaplitt, a neurosurgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center, and one of the study authors. "We are getting much closer to a reality where this treatment can be offered to patients."In patients with Parkinson's disease, their brains get overactive after losing the normal supply of a chemical called GABA. The new treatment, gene therapy, works by inserting billions of copies of a gene into patients' brains that helps them produce more GABA.Kaplitt said the results might spur similar treatments for other brain disorders like Alzheimer's, epilepsy and depression.

SUVA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Some 300 diabetes patients undergo amputations every year in Fiji and the trend is worrying the authorities.This is according to research carried out by the country's Physiotherapy Associations which shows that majority of these amputations occur in the 40 to 60 age group, physiotherapist Lusia Tikolevu told radio FijiVillage website on Monday.Tikolevu said that they are trying to formulate a protocol for physicist to better understand diabetes in Fiji.A visit to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Fiji's capital city of Suva by Xinhua reporter reveals the increasing number of bed ridden patients affected by diabetes in wards.Tikolevu said that diabetes is a prevalent disease and needs the involvement of the whole community for a successful preventative measures.Shocking figures show four out of every 10 people in Fiji have diabetes, putting it amongst the highest in the world.The Fred Hollows Foundation in New Zealand that completed the first survey of its kind in Fiji also showed the diabetic rate in the island nation is four times more than in New Zealand.The survey across 34 communities in Fiji found 40 percent of the people have diabetes."When we found out that 40 percent of the population had diabetes the scope and the depth of the problem just hit us. The impact in terms of costs family aspects, economic issues its just going to be staggering," says Doctor Tom Schaefer from the New Zealand foundation.The survey results also showed a third of those with diabetes did not know they had the disease and women were almost twice as likely as men to have it.The magnitude of the problem is worrying for a health system which has committed staff but little resources."The cost of medication alone is going to outstrip the ability of any health system to do it," says Schaefer.The existence of the sugar cane industry in the island nation may be a contributing factor to the high level of diabetics.

Wen chatted with Zhao, asking about his family's income and their preparations for the lunar new year.Zhao works as a migrant worker in Wujiang City, an economically-developed part of Jiangsu Province. His son and daughter-in-law work in Shanghai. They returned home on the eve of the Spring Festival."With the income we earn working in cities and what we earn growing crops, our family income has increased and we have rebuilt and renovated our house," Zhao told Premier Wen. A paved road now allows buses to reach the village, Zhao added.Wen said, "Only when the people living in old revolutionary bases live better lives can we feel relieved."At farmer Zhao Kongying's home, Wen joined the family in making "yuanzi," a glutinous rice ball traditionally eaten during the Spring Festival.Wen later went to Hetang Village. Addressing an open debate of the UN Security Council on the interdependence between security and development, Li Baodong, China's permanent representative to the UN said the inter-linkages between peace and development are most pronounced in Africa. There will be no world prosperity and stability without peace and development in the region. He called on the international community to provide greater support and more assistance to regional countries, AU and other regional and subregional organizations to maintain African peace and security. Li stressed that security and development are mutually linked and reinforcing. To safeguard peace and promote development, the international community should increase development input and eradicate root causes of conflicts. "Poverty and underdevelopment are the major causes for triggering conflicts and breeding terrorism. The developed countries should further increase its development aid, provide debts relief to developing countries, open up markets, transfer technology and help the developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals as soon as possible." Li said development can be anchored only in an environment free from war and turbulence. The UN and Security Council should vigorously promote peaceful culture, encourage and support peaceful resolutions to disputes through dialogue, consultations and good offices.
