DENVER — Doctors are reporting a rare polio-like illness in children is once again spiking around the country, including in Colorado. Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a spinal disease the can leave children with permanent paralysis. Health officials report 14 cases in Colorado so far in 2018.It's believed AFM is connected to enterovirus.The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said of the 14 cases diagnosed so far, 11 people tested positive for enterovirus A71, one tested positive for enterovirus D68 and two people tested negative for any type of enterovirus."While all the patients were hospitalized, nearly all have fully recovered. There have been no deaths," CDPHE's Shannon Barbare said in a statement.Children's Hospital Colorado saw a cluster of AFM cases in 2014, which led to more research into the rare disease. In 2016, KMGH profiled Kiko Violante, a 3-year-old boy who was diagnosed with AFM. At first all he had were typical cold-like symptoms."Runny nose, cough and for about a week he was like that," said Laura Violante. She wasn't too concerned — until he started having trouble walking."He just wasn’t walking the way he used to. I had to really support him," she said. "And then he couldn’t look at me. He started doing this rigid movement in his neck, and he couldn’t really turn."Colorado has previously had outbreaks of the less-common enterovirus types. Enterovirus D68 sickened 11 people with AFM. Enterovirus A71 caused similar outbreaks to this year's in 2003 and 2005, the CDPHE said."There is no vaccination or specific treatment for enteroviruses. People with mild illness typically need treatment only for symptoms," Barbare said in a statement. "However, some illnesses caused by EV-A71 and EV-D68 can be severe enough to require hospitalization."The CDC has a web page devoted to AFM. DENVER — A mom-to-be is counting her blessings after receiving a generous tip from “Catfish” host Nev Schulman, who has the same birthday as her due date.Zulia Reyes works at the Smashburger at the Denver International Airport. She’s been a server for nearly a decade and has worked at the burger restaurant for more than a year.She said she’s met celebrities while working, but her connection with Schulman took it to another level when he asked her when she was due.“I told him Sept. 26," she said. "He’s like, 'That’s my birthday.'”Reyes is 32 weeks pregnant. The two took a picture and after Schulman left, Reyes discovered a big surprise on the table.“The tip was 6 — for my due date, which is Sept. 26, which is his birthday,” Reyes said. “It means the world to my baby and my family. We never expected this to happen to us.”Schulman left a note at the end of the receipt reading, "Congrats on your baby girl! Fingers crossed for 9/26, Nev.”Through tears, Reyes admitted she had lost hope on Monday.“I had one of those days where nothing went right for me at work,” she said.Her husband is out of work as they prepare for the arrival of baby Zulia. DENVER, Colorado — The deadliest wildfire in California's history has left behind a path of unimaginable destruction, wiping out homes and killing at least 50 people. The Hamilton family had nine minutes to evacuate and barely escaped as flames raced toward their home. They lost everything in the fire just three weeks after moving all their belongings to Paradise, California.Steve Hamilton, his wife Delinda and their three kids moved from Colorado to California so he could take a job as a lead pastor. The family spent six years in Colorado where he worked for the Rocky Mountain Conference of Seventh-day Adventists."I know it was a really hard decision for him to leave but he felt like God was calling him out there," said Matt Moreland, a longtime friend and former coworker.Boxes were still packed when the fire destroyed the home where they had recently moved in. Pictures show the outline of a foundation and some of their belongings in the debris."They really just jumped in the car and drove away and Steve said when they were driving away their front yard was already on fire," said Moreland.He say the family didn't have insurance yet because they had just moved. Despite their loss, the family is focusing on helping others in their new community. "As soon as they went down the hill in Chico, Steve was calling people, asking for supplies to get things organized in order to start helping these people," said Moreland.Now friends are trying to help the family start over. They started a GoFundMe page to raise money for them as they continue their ministry work in California."They would never ask for help, they would just be the ones helping everyone else," said Lindsey Pratt, a friend who started the fundraising page. 1783

Del Mar, Calif. (KGTV)- California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a series of gun bills into law Friday, including a bill that will prohibit gun and ammunition shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The bill was authored by State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-78)."People have the right to continue to buy guns at private establishments. The state just shouldn't have a role in facilitating the flow of guns into neighborhoods where children are killed," Gloria told 10News in an interview shortly after returning from the bill signing in Sacramento.Gloria was inspired to act by anti-gun violence advocates who began protesting the Crossroads of the West Gun Show, held five times each year at the Fairgounds. Groups such as "Never Again CA" began the protests shortly after the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.Crossroads President Tracy Olcott told 10News the company plans to sue the stop the law from taking effect. "Gun shows are not the place where gun violence is created. We're the ones who are educating about gun safety and I think when you have an environment where you can talk about it and educate people, I think that's an important part of curbing gun violence."The next gun show will be held in December.
