A wet spring in Las Vegas has spawned hordes of grasshoppers so large, they're showing up on the weather radar.In viewing the radar, CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar said it looked like there were two storms over the Vegas area: one north of the city (that was actual rain) and another right over Las Vegas. A new face is serving up coffee as a Starbucks barista in the Hyatt Place Boca Raton in Florida. It's the latest promotion for Angie Diaz in her 8 months in hospitality. Diaz moved from Colombia, so she had been learning a new language while also finding a job. She's deaf, which made the transition that much more complicated, learning the signed and written words of her new community. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports only about 19% of people with disabilities are employed in the United States, far less than the general population. "In the past, I really had a lot of struggles and I really had to open myself up to opportunities," Diaz signed.Diaz went through the Disability Services Hospitality Training Program with CareerSource in Palm Beach County. She learned hospitality skills while being given fair access to an interpreter in class. When she was first hired at the hotel, she was provided an interpreter for her training there. "My team members, when they found out I was deaf, they didn't really know how to handle it. They thought maybe it would be really hard to communicate," she signed. General Manager Sharon Ballard said Diaz quickly helped the coworkers adjust. "She's no different from anyone else, it's just the few alterations we have to communicate with her," Ballard said.Ballard said Diaz gave such excellent customer service, she was promoted to the position of a Starbucks Barista. "So she's working a bit one-on-one with the guests, and then hopefully we'll be able to get her at the front desk as well. To just move her up in her career," Ballard said.Hyatt Place Boca Raton has provided a machine that allows Diaz and other employees to basically "text" back and forth quickly on two computers facing each other. Diaz, however, suggests there are many ways to communicate, even if a person hasn't learned sign language yet, including using gestures and facial expressions."I have a really go-getter personality, and I showed them that we can find ways to communicate," she explained.Diaz is a model of success. Four other associates who are deaf have been hired in Hyatt hotels in the area, all from the CareerSource program. "All of this collectively has helped me become who I am. After targeting keto and paleo dieters, Chipotle is courting vegetarians.The fast casual chain on Monday expanded its new line of diet-based bowls to include vegan and vegetarian options. "Lifestyle bowls" launched earlier this year with Whole30 and double protein meals in addition to the keto and paleo bowls.The lifestyle bowls are a way for Chipotle to market itself to a wide variety of customers focused on health, especially as it rebounds from E. coli and norovirus scares from a few years ago. And the vegetarian and vegan options could help raise awareness among an increasingly important customer base.Chipotle first introduced its vegan protein option, Sofritas, in 2014. Among them was an 87-year-old man getting an honorary diploma, 70 years after he left school for the military.Floyd Edward Hoskins, known to friends and family members as Ed, left Ellet High School in 1949 at age 17 to join the military.“Three years, three months, 19 days,” Hoskins said of his total time in the Army. During that time, he said, he was supposed to serve in Korea but was sent to Alaska for two years instead.When he came home, Hoskins said he initially had trouble finding a job but eventually landed one at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where he worked for “44 years, four months, three weeks and one day.”Hoskins moved to Hawaii two years ago to live with one of his sons and his daughter-in-law. His daughter-in-law, Cynthia Allen Hoskins, began doing some research into veterans’ benefits.“We are retired military, my husband and I,” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “And we were doing some research as far as our kids and their benefits in order to continue their college education.”She ran across information about the benefits the State of Ohio provides to veterans, where she learned her father-in-law might be eligible to receive his high school diploma.
