Cigarette boxes sold across the United States soon will display a new court-ordered accessory.Starting Wednesday, tobacco brands have been ordered to put "corrective statements" on product packaging that clearly state the harmful health effects of smoking, according to court documents. The order follows a long and rocky road of litigation against the tobacco industry. It comes as a result of a 1999 lawsuit that the US Department of Justice filed against the country's largest cigarette manufacturers and tobacco trade organizations, claiming civil fraud and racketeering violations over the course of more than 50 years. In 2006, federal Judge Gladys Kessler ruled that the tobacco industry had violated civil racketeering laws and ordered companies to issue "corrective statements" on their packaging, on company websites, and in print and television ads. 865
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police are searching for the person who shot several kids with a BB gun recently.Thursday just before 4 p.m., three children were walking home from school when they say they were shot with a BB gun by someone driving past them near Montevalle Park on Duncan Ranch Rd. The children didn't need medical attention, but they did have visible injuries, Chula Vista Police said. Two of the girls told 10News reporter Laura Acevedo that a white SUV pulled up next to them before they were shot."The windows went down, and they yelled cuss words at us, and then they just pulled out the BB gun and they shot us," Bella Budd told 10News."If they had hit us in the eye or anywhere else more dangerous, we could've been rushed to the ER or seriously hurt," Brianna Field added.Since that report, CVPD said two other people have also reported being shot with BB gun by an unknown suspect.A description of a vehicle or suspect wasn't immediately available.CVPD is investigating and says anyone with information is asked to call 619-691-5151. 1064
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman narrowly avoided being hit by a falling tree branch on a busy Chula Vista street Wednesday. A large branch fell from the eucalyptus tree along Telegraph Canyon Road about 3 p.m., crashing through the passenger side window of a woman’s car. Had a passenger been in the seat, the person would have been impaled, crews on the scene estimated. The woman pulled into the bike lane to assess the damage. She was able to walk independently but paramedics took her to the hospital for an assessment. No other cars were damaged, officials said. A neighbor told 10News they have seen other branches fall from the same tree. No one has been injured by the other incidents. 706
CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Chula Vista Police have arrested six suspects in an assault with a deadly weapon and robbery of a 16-year-old boy that occurred at a Chula Vista restaurant last Thursday, law enforcement officials announced.Police officials said that four juveniles and two adults, all of whom are suspected of participating in the April 11 attack, were taken into custody on Wednesday. Four of the suspects, aged between 15- and 17-years-old, attended Morse High School and have since been suspended. The two adult suspects, Kent Pasunting, 18, and Aldrin Uy, 19, attended Mark Twain High School, an alternative/continuation high school with a campus located at Morse High School. WATCH: Otay Ranch family upset over violent video"Chula Vista Police worked cooperatively with representatives of the Sweetwater Union High School District, the District Attorney’s Office, and several other officials. The victim and family, along with representatives of the Cotixan restaurant, all cooperated in the investigation. Officials with the San Diego Unified School District helped police to identify the attackers," said Chula Vista Police Department Captain Phil Collum. The incident was captured on cell phone video and posted to social media by the teen's mother. All six suspects were identified, in part, by the video, Collum said. The family says their teen was waiting for his mom to pick him up at Cotixan Mexican Restaurant last Thursday after school, when a group of teens walked in and started kicking and punching the boy.In the video, you can see someone on the ground getting repeatedly punched and kicked. At one point in the seven-second clip, you can see someone throw a chair on the teen.Family to hold protest outside Chula Vista restaurant after violent video surfacesThe boy's father, Margarito Martin, tells 10News he was shocked when he saw the video. He says everything started days before on Instagram, when, he says, his son told someone to stop harassing one of his friends. Martin says one teen then started messaging his son telling him he was going to beat him up.Martin says the incident was reported to Chula Vista Police but he's worried the teens will get away with what they did.Collum said the dispute began last month when the victim and suspect got into a heated exchange on social media over comments made to one of the victim’s friends. "On April 11th the victim and his girlfriend were sitting at the Cotixan restaurant when the suspects walked-in unexpectedly," Collum said. "Police believe the suspects entered the restaurant with the intent to attack the victim.""The suspects confronted the victim and the group began assaulting him," Collum said. The victim suffered a fractured left wrist. 2745
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A developer wants to add 300 more units to the Otay Ranch project in Chula Vista, expanding the housing options on the 35 acre site.Baldwin and Sons, the developer behind the project, is asking for public input at a meeting Tuesday night. It's at 6:30 pm at the Residence Inn by Marriott at 2005 Centerpark Road in Chula Vista.Right now, the project, called Otay Ranch, calls for 600 multi-family units, a 2 acre park, 15,000 square feet of commercial retail and two hotels. One of the hotels opened in 2017 and construction on the 292 planned for-sale condos is underway. Now, they want to add 300 units to the plans."There's a real need for housing in this location," says Nick Lee, a spokesman for Baldwin and Sons.Under the original plans, 300 apartments would have been built, with most of them being two or three-bedroom units. The new plans call for 600 apartments, with 65% of them being either studio apartments or one-bedroom units.Lee says this will bring in more young professionals, instead of families with children. That will minmize the impact on nearby schools, which are all near capacity.People who live nearby are more concerned about the traffic problems that will come about with 1000 new homes in the area."It's unbearable," says Michelle Harrison. "I don't think anyone planned for the congestion we already see on a daily basis."Lee says the soon to open South Bay Rapid from MTS will alleviate some of the traffic problems. The apartments are a 5 minute walk to the Otay Ranch Station. He adds the developers have worked with the city and are keeping the project well within the bounds of the General Plan. Also, Lee says an updated Environmental Impact Review showed the additional housing will not create any greater impact on the area than the original plan.Lee says Tuesday's meeting will be important to find out what the people who live nearby want to see in the complex. The company hopes to have final plans approved by the City Council in the start of 2019, so construction can begin as soon as possible. 2079
