A recent drug bust in Southern California yielded 18 pounds of fentanyl, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. According to authorities, that's enough fentanyl for 4 million fatal doses, or enough to overdose every single person in Orange County.Police say the threat of fentanyl is increasing exponentially. Orange County authorities "have seized more than 100 pounds of the deadly drug, setting the pace to more than double fentanyl seizures for the third year," according to a news release.Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, making even small amounts incredibly deadly."The threat this extremely potent drug poses to our community is increasing exponentially, not subsiding," Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said in a news release.According to the California Department of Health, statewide fentanyl deaths increased 614 percent from 2014 to 2018, jumping from 104 to 743 deaths. California's figures mirror a similar national uptick of fentanyl deaths. Among the more than 70,200 drug overdose deaths estimated in 2017, the sharpest increase occurred among deaths related to fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (other synthetic narcotics) with more than 28,400 overdose deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The drug seizure in Orange County on October 16 that produced 18 pounds of fentanyl, which has a street value of .25 million, also yielded 5 pounds of heroin and half a pound of methamphetamine. A Waste Management worker’s act of kindness is bringing tears to the eyes of many people after video of it was posted to Facebook.Colette Kingston posted the Ring doorbell footage Wednesday, and it has since received hundreds of shares.Kingston wrote in the post that her mother fell at her Independence, Missouri, home in January while trying to roll her trash can back up the driveway. The same worker captured in the video was there when it happened, Kingston said.“Ever since, he has brought the can back up the driveway for mom,” Kingston wrote.In the video, the pair strikes up a conversation as they walk back up the drive, holding hands.“You’re looking good! Like that hair, you got it down! I gotta work on mine. It makes me focus on everything.”Others, however, say they know better than to mix cars and cannabis. “Do not smoke weed and drive,” said marijuana smoker Sam Lee. “We all know we can barely think straight instead of drive.”Now, a team of medical professionals is studying the dangers of smoking and driving.“There’s been increasing concern about the potential of public health impacts of people using cannabis while they drive or shortly after,” said Dr. Michael Kosnett of the University of Colorado Denver.Kosnett is teaming up with Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety on a study about the effects of cannabis while operating a motor vehicle.This study tests three focus groups: daily smokers, occasional smokers and non-smokers as they go through tests measuring reaction times, hand-eye coordination and short-term memory.More than a year into the study, the team has hit an unexpected road block: they can’t seem to find occasional smokers.“As for people who just used it occasionally, like on a weekly basis, that was probably less than one-fourth of the people,” Kosnett said.This study is still in process. Kosnett has not yet released the findings.Denver Police Sgt. Alan Ma, however, doesn’t need to know the results. He says he knows from working his nightly beat that driving high is dangerous.“Their perception and reaction times are delayed,” Ma said about people who drive while high on marijuana.
