SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former KUSI anchor Sandra Maas is suing the station for million, alleging retaliatory termination and violation of the Equal Pay Act. Maas’ attorneys claim McKinnon Broadcasting Company and the company's actions “have caused, and will continue to cause, Maas emotional distress and loss of earnings."Maas was hired by KUSI in 2004 as a morning news co-anchor. In 2010, she was promoted to evening co-anchor. The lawsuit states Maas initiated additional duties for herself in 2016 when she started writing, producing and anchoring a weekly segment called “Healthy Living.” In 2017, court documents say Maas suspected she was underpaid compared to her male peers. The lawsuit claims her suspicions were confirmed when a former manager told her a male co-anchor was being paid ,000 more than her per year. The lawsuit states that in December of 2017, Maas brought up the issue of pay inequity during contract negotiations and “was given the runaround.” After sending a written complaint to her manager and the station’s general manager, Mike McKinnon Jr., the lawsuit says McKinnon told Maas he “did not like the tone of [her] email.”The last few paragraphs of the lawsuit claim failure to provide equal pay to women, gender and/or age discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, and retaliation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of students at nearly a dozen schools walked out of class Friday in protest of the planned layoffs by the Sweetwater Union High School District.The district says cutting the teachers is the last resort to fixing a million budget deficit. Teachers and Students at Southwest High say cutting the Learning Center program will cause students to be enrolled in Independent Studies, which is similar to homeschooling. This program only has a 7 percent graduation rate. About 1,300 students use the district’s dozen learning centers.The state is auditing the district for potential money mismanagement, but the district says the shortfall is because of the decline in student enrollment and revenue.Students say they believe the district should cut the salaries of administrators instead of cutting hundreds of teachers. SUHSD's superintendent took home 7,000 in 2018.During the meeting where board members approved the cuts, Superintendent Dr. Karen Janney said they have looked at ways to save the positions.“Even in the most challenging financial times, layoffs for this governance team have been a last resort,” said Janney.Teachers and staff at risk of being laid off will receive pink slips in early March, though a final decision on the fate of their employment won't come until May. 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Evacuees at MCAS Miramar have circulated a petition at the base after a coronavirus patient was mistakenly reintroduced to those under quarantine.The petition, which begins by thanking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suggests several actions be taken at Miramar to mitigate the potential spread of the virus.Samples from three patients brought to UC San Diego Medical Center were not labeled consistently with CDC regulations, leading to results being returned as negative, when in reality, the samples were not tested.RELATED: Mislabeled sample led to release of COVID-19 patientOne of those patients ended up testing positive for coronavirus. She was placed under self-isolation at the base before being brought back to the hospital.The petition:Following the confusion, a petition — written in both English and Chinese by an unknown author — suggested several precautions be taken in the future:"Everyone in the facility be tested;Preventing the gathering of large numbers of people into small, enclosed environments. The alternatives we suggest are the following:In room temperature taking in the morning;Meals delivered to the door;Townhalls through conference calls;Periodic delivery of personal protective gear to each room including masks and sanitizing alcohol for in room disinfection;Provision of hand sanitizer at the front desk and in the playground; andDisinfection of public areas 2-3 times/day including playground, laundry room, door knobs, etc."The petition adds that, "CDC’s current working assumption is the virus won’t spread until symptoms develop. However, we strongly disagree with using that assumption as the basis against broader testing ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Democrats have secured control of two of the most powerful agencies in our region - the city and the county.San Diego will soon have a democratic mayor and an 8 to 1 advantage on the City Council. Couple that with Democrats flipping the County Board of Supervisors after years of Republican control, and it appears a whole new philosophy is on the way."I've been waiting 20 years,” said Nicole Capretz, who heads the Climate Action Campaign. “This is, I mean, decades in the making.”Climate Action Campaign has fought the Republican-controlled Board of Supervisors for years over how it handles the environment, prevailing in court over the county's climate plan.“They've twice had to rescind their climate plan publicly, which is unprecedented,” Capretz said.Capretz said she expects things to change in January, when the board will flip to a 3-2 Democrat advantage. That is expected to shift how the county addresses key issues like the environment, public health, and housing - in other words, no more sprawling back country developments that many times wind up challenged in a public vote.“We have wasted so much energy and so much time debating things that were not legally valid and should not have been done,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Meanwhile, over at City hall, the Democrats will expand their veto proof advantage on the city council from 6-3 to 8-1.
