If you thought the presidential candidates had plenty of time to convince voters, think again. The swing state of North Carolina is set to start mailing out absentee ballots on Friday, September 4. That means voters will be able to return their ballots as early as next week. RECORD NUMBERS VOTING EARLYNorth Carolina is seeing a record number of absentee ballots because of the pandemic. In 2016. around 200,000 absentee ballots were counted. Already in 2020, the state has received around 600,000 requests. "It’s been kinda tough but we are trying to get through it," Kristen Scott, the elections director in Halifax, North Carolina, said. Scott only has a staff of three. In 2016, her staff received 200 absentee ballot requests. This year they have already received 2,000 and it's only early September. "I do go ahead and tell voters once you get your ballot, it's best to complete it and send it back in," Scott said. NORTH CAROLINA TEST CASEWhat happens next in North Carolina will be an example for other states around the country. Will voters return their ballot right away? Will they wait until the first debate? Additionally, will voters be able to follow all of the directions?For instance, in North Carolina, all absentee ballots must have a valid witness signature. During a pandemic will voters be able to find a witness? If it's not there, the ballot will be rejected. "In the primary, we saw about 15 percent of absentee ballots rejected," Allison Griggs with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, said. Griggs fears the election could depend on whether voters follow directions or not. In North Carolina, election officials are allowed to contact voters if they find an error with their ballot prior to the polls closing. Griggs advises all Americans to be on the lookout for phone calls from election officials just in case. Humanity's first visit to a star began this weekend. NASA's Parker Solar Probe will explore the sun's atmosphere in a mission that launched early Sunday. This is the agency's first mission to the sun and its outermost atmosphere, the corona.After being delayed on Saturday, the probe successfully launched at 3:31 a.m. ET Sunday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket, one of the world's most powerful rockets.Although the probe itself is about the size of a car, a powerful rocket is needed to escape Earth's orbit, change direction and reach the sun.The launch window was chosen because the probe will rely on Venus to help it achieve an orbit around the sun.Six weeks after launch, the probe will encounter Venus' gravity for the first time. It will be used to help slow the probe, like pulling on a handbrake, and orient the probe so it's on a path to the sun. 913

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance cameras captured a bizarre and dangerous accident in the South Bay. Darell Salondaguit has twelve surveillance cameras posted around his home at the corner of 15th Street and Imperial Beach Boulevard. He was taking a shower around eleven p.m. Monday when he heard a noise. "We heard a really big thud and thought it was cats in the backyard," said Salondaguit.When he woke up Tuesday morning, he discovered his wooden fence, potted plants, and palm tree were severely damaged. When he played back his cameras, he was shocked at what he saw. "Just a tire flying across from over there, crashing through here," described Salondaguit.The tire flew off of a car on Imperial Beach Boulevard, rolled across 15th Street and crashed through his fence. The cameras also show a man and a woman, casually step over the damaged fence, pick up the tire and leave."They had to come through the yard and get their tire, they didn't bother knocking or anything," said Salondaguit.He filed a report with the Sheriff's Department and hopes the people responsible will come forward."It was like really scary, cause I tend to check the plants at nighttime to see if they're properly watered because we have an automatic watering system. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been released from a Washington, DC, hospital following a "successful" surgery, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.The hospital released a statement Saturday saying the Louisiana Republican was discharged from the hospital and "the planned surgery was successful." The congressman "will be recovering at home for the next several days," the statement added.The congressman's Twitter account also shared the statement. CNN reported earlier this month that Scalise was beginning a "series of planned, inpatient procedures" while continuing to recover from injuries he sustained in a shooting last year.Scalise suffered a gunshot wound last summer when a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.In September, Scalise returned to Congress for the first time since the attack, saying at the time that he is "a living example that miracles really do happen."  957
