ESPN says it has a pretty good idea of who's going to pony up .99 a month for its new streaming service.Cord cutters, it probably won't be you.The new service, dubbed ESPN+, debuts Thursday. The company gave CNNMoney a sneak peek last week — and there's a lot that it brings to the table.It offers thousands of hours of live sports that aren't available on national TV, including, soccer, boxing, golf, rugby, cricket, and a baseball and hockey game or two every day of the MLB and NHL seasons.It has a few exclusives, too, including some episodes of the lauded ESPN documentary series "30 for 30" — plus that show's entire back catalog. There's also Kobe Bryant's new basketball analysis show "Detail," which premieres just in time for the NBA playoffs.That all adds up to a ton of content, and it's hard not to feel a bit overwhelmed by the variety. ESPN executives sounded downright breathless last week as they rattled off the number of programs they are bringing to the service."I, personally, am incredibly excited about the potential," new ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro told reporters at the company's Connecticut headquarters. "We really like our hand here."Related: ESPN+ launches into hazy future with 'Last Days of Knight'But all that pomp and circumstance comes with a couple of glaring caveats.This is not the Netflix of the sporting world. You will still need a cable subscription to watch all the biggest NFL, NBA and college games featured on traditional ESPN networks.And even if you're a fan of the sports touted on ESPN+, you'll still likely need paid access to the ESPN TV channels or another season pass to watch every game.In other words: If you don't already pay for cable, an ESPN+ subscription will give you some of a lot of things, but not all of everything. And you're definitely not getting the big stuff.The Disney-owned ESPN knows this. Pitaro made it pretty clear that he didn't expect customers to treat the new service as a standalone, and described it as "complementary and additive to what you've been getting."Pitaro added that ESPN+ wasn't designed to compete with distributors like Comcast, AT&T and Dish Network's Sling TV that offer cable bundles. All of those companies sell packages that include ESPN's TV channels.All of the ESPN+ content is integrated into a newly redesigned ESPN app, which you can download for your phone or streaming device. It works on all the major platforms, including iPhone, Android, Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire.I tested an iPhone version that subscribed to ESPN's TV channels and ESPN+, and it was easy to pull up live games, replays and other clips playing on any of the main ESPN channels or the add-on service. A tab that features game scores for all of my favorite teams was an added bonus.The Apple TV version of the app was just as simple to use, and even allowed me to watch up to four events simultaneously. That depends.ESPN is marketing the new service to three types of customers. ENCINITAS, CALIF. (KGTV) -- The return to in-person instruction for some north county students appears to be in legal limbo.Friday, the California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the union representing the teachers in the San Dieguito Union High School District. The union wants the district's reopening plan blocked, saying, among other things, it violates the state's public health rules concerning the pandemic.Last Tuesday, the school board voted to give students the option of returning to in-person instruction five days a week on January 27th. Previously, the board voted to return to campus one day a week beginning January 4th.Lori Laroque has two boys in eighth grade at Pacific Trails Middle School. She applauds the board's decision."I was elated, and this was something that should have happened a long time ago," said Laroque.Ann Cerny has been teaching U.S History at Earl Warren Middle School for twenty-seven years. She also has a high school daughter in the district.Cerny says she would love to see kids return to campus, but she says now is not the time."Yes, in-person learning is best, but it's not going to be that 2019 in-person situation, and people aren't seeming to accept that reality," said Cerny, who has been teaching remotely from her classroom.Union leaders estimate up to 20% of teachers won't return if the plan for five days a week in-person instruction goes through.Cerny says she has concerns about exposure to COVID-19, but that isn't her biggest fear."It's the academic chaos that we find ourselves heading towards. I'm just worried that it's not going to roll out well. I'm worried for equity for students. I'm worried for the many, many teachers going out on leave and having subs for classes," said Cerny.The school board president said the district is actively recruiting for teachers and substitutes.No one from the board was available to comment on camera, but President Maureen Muir sent 10News a lengthy statement explaining the reopening plan."The health and safety of our students and staff is the District's highest priority. The District's Safe Reopening Plan follows the guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health and includes detailed protocols for distancing and ventilation.Staff will be encouraged to maintain 6 feet of distancing, as practical, from one another at all times, and teacher desks will be at least six feet away from students. Students will maintain distancing as practicable and in compliance with guidance from CDPH, including arranging desks in a manner that minimizes face-to-face contact. We have evaluated all of our classroom spaces and planned to maximize distancing. We have also planned carefully to maximize distancing for students and staff outside of our classrooms, including before, after, and between classes.The District consulted with ventilation and filtration experts to determine the maximum efficiency our units can handle. MERV 8+ filters were installed in all of our units, which achieves MERV 11 efficiency. Additionally, we purchased and installed HEPA filters in our classrooms, common areas, and offices. We have CO2 sensors in our newer buildings that monitor indoor air quality and we are purchasing more for other spaces.To ensure the continuity of teaching and learning, the District is allowing teachers who are in a high-risk group, or who have a household member in a high-risk group, to teach from home for the remainder of the second quarter, which ends on January 22, 2021.We have also informed teachers who have childcare needs due to COVID-19 that they may also work from home during this same time period. The District has made every effort to work with our teachers to keep them safe and to address their concerns about returning to work. The District is continuing to evaluate potential staffing shortages and has been actively recruiting teachers and substitute teachers to address this issue.The District is aware that the San Dieguito Faculty Association filed a petition for a peremptory writ of mandate on Friday that seeks to prevent the District from providing in-person instruction to students in January. Facebook users in the United States who want to run certain ads on the platform will need to hand over the last four digits of their social security number and a picture of a government-issued ID.The social network now requires anyone who wants to run ads related to political campaigns, civil rights, immigration, guns, economy, and other issues, to prove they're in the United States. Part of the proof required is the last four digits of your Social Security number.The move is part of a series of initiatives by Facebook to increase transparency on the platform after a Russian government-linked troll group spent thousands of rubles?on Facebook ads targeting Americsans ahead of the 2016 presidential election.In addition to a Social Security number, users wishing to buy ads will need to provide a picture of a government-issued ID and a US mailing address. Once Facebook verifies the information submitted, the company will mail a code to the provided address to authorize the user's Facebook account to buy ads.Facebook declined to share what services it uses to verify Social Security numbers and other personal details. As recently as last month,Facebook said ads would also include the tag "Political Ad." (KGTV) — A fundraising t-shirt made for an Escondido Police officer fighting brain cancer was banned from Palomar Hospital after someone deemed it racist.Escondido Police Officer Brett Byler, 31, seemed to have it all: a beautiful family and his dream job. But in February, his life turned upside down."He went for a bike ride, and he collapsed," Officer Byler's father, Jim Byler said. "He went to the emergency room, and four days later, he was having brain surgery."The young father of three was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Byler said the news was devastating, but the community immediately showed their support. Within days, a friend and employee at Palomar Hospital, where Officer Byler was doing rehab, asked if they could make a fundraiser t-shirt for Byler."I thought it was awesome. It was just an act of kindness and generosity, and it kind of overwhelmed us," Byler said, tearing up.The friend designed an original logo with the family's silhouette in front of an American flag with red white and blue stripes, each color representing fire, medical personnel, and police.Byler said it was a big hit. Along with the Gofundme, it raised a lot of money, and hospital staff wore the T-shirt for months."Everything was good, and then we found out that the shirt was being characterized as something that it was clearly never intended to be," Byler said.According to Palomar Hospital, a patient and staff member recently reported that the shirt was racist and that they were offended by it. The blue line in a similarly designed shirt has caused national controversy in recent months, where some have interpreted it as "Anti-Black Lives Matter." So the hospital asked staff wearing the shirt on-duty, to take it off immediately. The Bylers said they were appalled."It's so upsetting that such a positive, unifying message morphed into and mischaracterized into something that is so hateful," Jim Byler said.A hospital spokesman told ABC 10News that they support Officer Byler. (KGTV) -- The Encinitas teenager bitten by a great white shark is thanking all who saved him and those who continue to support his recovery.It was nearly two months ago when 13-year-old Keane Webre-Hayes was attacked while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach.Webre-Hayes sustained substantial damage to his left torso and face. His humorous was broken, ball joint broke in half, and rotator cuff torn apart in several places. He also lost a significant amount of his deltoid and lat muscles.The 13-year-old underwent hours of surgeries and got 1,000 stitches."I feel really thankful to have my arm, to be alive, and I'm thankful to probably in the future help other people," said Webre-Hayes.He's now considering a career in lifeguarding. Those who helped him are on a long list of people he wants to thank.“The people that towed me in from the kayak, the first responders, the pilot, the doctors, the nurses, all the companies that have given me things, it's motivation to get back out there and do what I love, like surfing and skateboarding," said Webre-Hayes.His mother, Ellie Hayes, says she is grateful for the outpouring of support and financial donations which will help with ongoing medical expenses."It’s one of the ultimate tests, and I know that there’s a reason and meaning, and there’s good that we can do with it," said Ellie.
