The keyboard has replaced the pen these days, and it is truly just as mighty. The owners of DJ’s Bar and Grill on the bypass in Winchester, Kentucky, can attest to that. “It’s alarming to think that this is the caliber of the general public, or the intelligence level we’re dealing with day to day,” said Danielle Ratliff. Three Decembers ago, a post appeared on Facebook about a restaurant refusing to serve ten of the 35 meals it had prepared for a group of veterans. The 25 who were there, wanted to serve the extra meals to homeless vets. The restaurant, which also goes by the name DJ’s, apparently refused. Since it’s an anniversary month for that post, it was re-shared and from coast to coast people got wind of it. Many, however, decided to not read all of it. They missed the fact that the post was from 2016. Missed the fact that it was directed at DJ’s of Pueblo, Colorado. “Armed” with that lack of knowledge, they decided to come after Gary Rison’s establishment in Clark County.“Even this morning, I responded to more negativity,” Rison said. He referred to an old restaurateur adage about how one negative review can reach 100 people, but one nice review might reach only five people. This had the same kind of impact. Comments to DJ’s (the one in Winchester, not Pueblo) Facebook page came from as far away Arkansas, and Nebraska. People there claiming DJ’s actions on that night to be “shameful,” and “disgraceful.” Rison and his daughter have responded to most of the comments, and many people deleted their negative posts once they had, you know, the facts. This story could’ve been as juicy as the steaks at DJ’s (Winchester, not Pueblo), if it had been even remotely accurate. 1709

The brand and intellectual property of Sports Illustrated have been sold to marketing company Authentic Brands Group for 0 million.Meredith Corporation, the current owner of the iconic magazine, announced the sale on Tuesday. In an unusual arrangement, Meredith will continue to publish the Sports Illustrated magazine and website. The structure of the deal suggests that the Sports Illustrated brand is much more valuable than the storied magazine.Authentic Brands Group, which owns the brands of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, will assume the marketing, business development and licensing of Sports Illustrated's intellectual property.Jamie Salter, CEO of Authentic Brands Group, said in a statement that Sports Illustrated's "trusted name and fiercely devoted following set the stage for the brand to become a leader in lifestyle and entertainment."According to the companies, potential new business opportunities include events, conferences, gambling and gaming products as well as video and television.Meredith, which is paying Authentic Brands Group an undisclosed fee to publish the Sports Illustrated magazine and website, said it would maintain the publication's editorial independence.Sports Illustrated was put up for sale last year along with Time, Fortune and Money magazines, which Meredith acquired via its purchase of Time Inc. Meredith also owns People, InStyle and Better Homes & Gardens.Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Benioff purchased Time in September.Meredith sold Fortune to Thai billionaire Chatchaval Jiaravanon in November, and decided to take Money magazine off the market in April, turning it instead into a digital-only publication. 1715

The Federal Communications Commission unveiled a proposal Wednesday to limit the scourge of unwanted robocalls, a measure that would give phone companies wide latitude to block those calls by default. The plan, if approved, could go into effect later this year and allow carriers to apply robocall-blocking technologies to customer accounts automatically.Americans received more than 26 billion robocalls last year — a 46% increase over the year before, according to a study by the Seattle-based spam monitoring service Hiya.Companies have been working on a variety of techniques to thwart spam callers, but many have been reluctant to release them widely over fears that the technology could be considered illegal by regulators, said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who added his proposal aims to put those fears to rest."Allowing call blocking by default could be a big benefit for consumers who are sick and tired of robocalls," Pai said in a statement. "By making it clear that such call blocking is allowed, the FCC will give voice service providers the legal certainty they need to block unwanted calls from the outset so that consumers never have to get them."Carriers have also been developing standards aimed at verifying the owner of a particular phone number, in order to cut down on robocalls in which scammers hide behind legitimate phone numbers. The FCC proposal would ask for public input on how those standards should work.Last month, T-Mobile and Comcast's Xfinity said they would start verifying calls between their networks, using a tool that will alert customers if an incoming call wasn't placed by an actual human. Most major telecom companies have also had a hand in developing and testing anti-robocall technology called STIR/SHAKEN. The technology's goal is to tamp down on bad actors who use a technique called "spoofing," which allows them to skirt Caller ID and make it look like they're calling from another number — even phone numbers that are identical or look similar to your own.Spoofing has made it difficult for authorities to sort out which robocalls are illegal and which robocalls are spoofed for a legitimate reason, in cases like a call from a pharmacist or local school district. 2223

The man who authorities say opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, had a ''stone cold look'' when he surrendered, a police official who came face-to-face with him told CNN."It was a look I'd never seen before, and I've been on this force for 31 years," the official said. "I've seen murderers, robbers, nothing like this."Patrick Crusius, 21, of Allen, Texas, has been charged with capital murder in the mass shooting that left 22 people dead and more than two dozen wounded, according to court records. He is being held without bond.Crusuis was arrested Saturday in the Walmart parking lot, where he was sitting in his vehicle after the attack and saw police units responding, a law enforcement official told CNN. He then got out of his vehicle unarmed and walked over to the police vehicles where he was arrested without incident, the official said. While in custody, Crusius has been "cold" in his interactions with police, police officials told CNN.Police Chief Greg Allen told reporters Monday that Crusius has been cooperative, though he's shown no remorse and "appears to be in a state of shock and confusion."Criminal defense attorney Mark Stephens has been appointed by the court to represent Crusius, according to court records. Stephens did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.Suspect wrote a 'manifesto,' police sayCrusius is believed to have authored a racist, anti-immigrant document that laid out a dark vision of America overrun by Hispanic immigrants. With the hate-filled writing, which authorities called a 'manifesto,' were the words: "I'm probably going to die today."The four-page document, titled "The Inconvenient Truth," was published on the online message board 8chan about 20 minutes before the shooting. The writing is filled with white supremacist language and racist hatred aimed at immigrants and Latinos, and the author says he opposes "race mixing" and encourages immigrants to return to their home countries. Some of the language of the manifesto reflects ideas from President Trump, Fox News and the modern Republican party. For example, the document warns of a " 2129
