The flood gates are now closed in New Orleans as the city braces for Tropical Storm Barry.Authorities have warned people in low-lying parts of Louisiana to evacuate. Rescue crews and National Guard troops are stationed across the city and state, preparing to assist in boat rescues. She says as the storm moves in, she’ll secure her shop with tape and sandbags. Nearby, some historic French Quarter businesses are prepping for the storm by putting out sandbags. Barry could strengthen to a hurricane, but it’s not the high winds that have residents and officials worried, says Benjamin Scott, with the National Weather Service. “It's the large amount of water,” he explains. “Take a look behind me. This is the Mississippi River, already strained from a season of flooding."Scott says the number one threat will be the heavy flooding and rainfall. The Mississippi River this time of year is usually at 6 to 8 feet, but right now, the river sits at 16 feet. The forecast is calling for 15 inches of rain in the city and possibly 25 inches elsewhere. Tourists in New Orleans are taking the warnings from officials seriously. Jacques Desormiere and his friends say they aren’t taking chances. They spent the day stocking up on essentials. “Water, we have a bunch of nuts and things,” he says. “We can cook and eat without electricity.” Desormiere says he and his friends will likely wait out the storm. A container of screws that fell off a vehicle and littered the roadway in Jackson County, Mississippi, caused flat tires along nearly 30 miles of interstate.Mississippi Highway Patrol responded Tuesday after getting numerous calls about stranded motorists near the Pascagoula River Bridge. When officers arrived, they discovered sheet metal screws scattered across Interstate 10 West. In total, 36 passenger cars and three semis each had multiple flat tires."Wrecker response time was upwards to three hours for [motorists] waiting on tow trucks due to the number of calls for service," the Mississippi Highway Patrol said in a statement."Troopers assisted [motorists] with changing flat tires and providing lane safety" for those who were stranded.Courtney Beauvais was on her way home to Ocean Springs when she noticed that she had a flat. Her car was equipped with run-flat tires, designed to resist deflation when punctured, so she was able to exit the highway and make it home."I noticed the car wobble a little bit when I exited," she said. "When I got home, I noticed screws in the side wall and in the bottom of the front tire."She now has to get a new tire for her car."I didn't think anything of it when I got the flat tire," she said. "Once I saw the pictures on Facebook when I got home, I was like, 'oh, my goodness.' "Luckily, the flat tires didn't cause any wrecks. SEATTLE, Wash. – For most sports enthusiasts immersing themselves in the roar of a stadium is the best part of fan experience. This year, numerous NFL teams are tailoring their venues for a very distinct group of spectators – those who otherwise might not be able to join in. While the sights and sounds of attending a sporting event can make it an unforgettable experience, Traci Schneider knows it’s not for everyone. “For a lot of people that can be really, really overwhelming.” It’s why more and more teams are adding sensory rooms to their venues. We were given access to one at CenturyLink Field, home to the Seattle Seahawks. “This is a place to go and a place to be safe and kind of just a little break to get away from it all,” explained Schneider. “So, any fan can come in here.” Schneider’s 17-year-old son Ben has autism. “Sensory issues are a big challenge for him, and I know what that looks like as a mom,” said Schneider. “And you want to make the world a little bit easier for your kids to navigate.” She helped provide input for this space, because not only is she a mom of a child with autism, but she’s also married to the Seahawks’ general manager. Schneider says the room is meant to help people with autism, anxiety, PTSD and other sensory disorders. “We still have a TV so people can still watch what’s happening out on the field,” Schneider said. The Seahawk’s room features dimmable overhead lighting, hooded chairs, a calming bubble wall and a fiber-optic waterfall curtain. “They slowly change colors and they’re meant to be touched,” Schneider said. All of the items help to calm a person. In addition to the sensory room, the Seahawks are the first to offer autism kits that include noise cancelling headphones and information on when the loudest moments in the game are expected to happen, including pyrotechnics. Schneider says the ultimate goal is to provide a safe space for anyone who may need a temporary reprieve without making them feel like they’re missing out. “So just knowing that that is supporting our fans and making them feel welcome.
