Quick thinking and response by Independence, Ohio police officer Andrew March, made all the difference in the world for a woman police say was attempting to take her own life, on the I-480 bridge on April 20.Officer March responded at 9:30 AM, after getting information from Cleveland police, that the woman could be on the bridge.Independence police dash camera video shows Officer March quickly jumping out of his cruiser, and then jumping up to grab the woman's leg, pulling her down to safety."I was just thinking get there fast, and if she's climbing up, make sure she gets back down safely on the right side," said March."I just grabbed whatever is available and start pulling and hopefully and would get her to safety."March credited higher safety fencing, installed along the I-480 bridge by the Ohio Department of Transportation two months ago, with giving him more time to get to the scene."It definitely made a difference, if it would have been the old fencing, she probably would have made it over the top," said March.Independence Police Chief Michael Kilbane told News 5, he and police chief's in Valley View and Garfield Heights, started working with State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills) last year to get the safety fencing improved."She really lobbied ODOT hard to get this done, and actually made them make it a priority," said Kilbane.Kilbane praised ODOT and said he hopes the safety fencing posted at other northeast Ohio bridges will be examined in the future."Again it if can just prevent one of them, or buy some time for somebody to get there and talk them out of it, or help them.  I think it's well worth the investment," said Kilbane.ODOT told News 5 it will install a 10-foot safety fence along the Lorain Road bridge, over the Rocky River, later this summer.Meanwhile, March told News 5 he doesn't feel like a hero, that he was just doing his job.Chief Kilbane disagrees."Andrew March is a hero," said Kilbane."I know he's a modest kid, but he saved a life today." 2054

Rashida Tlaib will likely be the first Muslim woman elected to Congress after CNN has projected her to win the Democratic primary in Michigan's 13th District.Tlaib, who beat a crowded field of Democrats to win Tuesday's primary, will not face a Republican opponent in November's general election. She can still be opposed by a write-in candidate, but would be the overwhelming favorite in the deeply Democratic district."The winner of tonight's primary will win the election," Andy Goddeeris, Tlaib's campaign manager, said on Tuesday. "No doubt about it."Tlaib, the eldest daughter of Palestinian immigrants, was one of more than 90 American Muslims running for office this year. In 2008, she was the first Muslim woman ever to serve in Michigan's state legislature.The congressional seat had been held by former Rep. John Conyers before he resigned in December amid allegations of sexual harassment.Tlaib is also running against Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones in a primary for the special election in the district, and the winner will serve from November until the beginning of the next Congress. Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden unveiled plans for racial economic equality on Tuesday before reporters in Delaware.Among the highlights of Biden’s plan, he says he wants to make public and historically black colleges and universities tuition free for families making less than 5,000 per year. He also said that he wants to provide student debt relief to lower income Americans.The Biden campaign released data that says that Black college graduates with a bachelor’s degree hold ,000 more student debt than white graduates. Biden also said that if elected, he would devote 0 billion for small business opportunities for those who have “been structurally excluded for generations.”“We need to make bold, practical investments to recover from the economic mess we’re in, and to rebuild for the economic future our country deserves,” Biden said in prepared remarks on Tuesday.During his news conference, he said that he plans to name a vice presidential candidate during the first week of August. Biden has previously said that he will choose a woman, and the former vice president has faced pressure from within the Democratic party to choose a woman of color.In June, Sen. Amy Klobuchar withdrew from consideration to be his running mate and urged Biden to choose a woman of color to be his running mate. 1329

Racial disparities and bias in health care can be a double whammy for multi-generational families of color — specifically when Black men are the caregivers."We tend to think of the male caregiver as that individual that comes helicoptering in and pays the bills or take care of yard work. But that's not all that male family caregivers do," said Rita Choula, the director of caregiving at the AARP Public Policy Institute.AARP has found that there are nearly 3 million African-American men taking care of an adult family member or non-relative — usually someone with memory, emotional or mental health conditions.Conversations with those caregivers reveal the unique challenges and stereotypes they face, including health care bias."If he is going into a situation with an understanding that there may be a bias — when we talk about higher levels of stress, that would be one thing that could cause more stress for an African American male caregiver," Choula said.Black men are also less likely to ask for help, which can add to the stress. They're often still working essential jobs and facing financial impacts due to tough choices about balancing careers with their caregiving responsibilities.That stress has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, as caregivers now face the risk of bringing the virus home to loved ones.But these Black men are dedicated. A majority of all African-American caregivers find a sense of purpose or meaning in that role — more so than other caregivers."Increasingly, male family caregivers are bathing their mothers. That's a difficult thing," Choula said. Residents in states hit by Hurricane Laura continue the long recovery to restoring their homes and businesses destroyed in the Category 4 storm.The death toll from Hurricane Laura has risen to 19 people across Louisiana and Texas.Power and water outages were widely reported in the hardest-hit areas, and it is expected to take weeks before the outages are restored.One of the places hit by the storm was Orange, Texas. Strong winds destroyed buildings, downed power lines and uprooted trees.Resident Robert Matthews is an employee at Mowers, Tractors Inc. in Orange.
