BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -- The Benham family of northwest Georgia has made history by breaking down barriers, which helped open up new opportunities for the African-American community. This always bring back good memories for me up here. We used to call it the beach,” Robert Benham said of George Washington Carver Park in Bartow County, Georgia. “It was a place where people of color could feel free.”Free, however, during a time of segregation. Robert Benham’s father was the superintendent at George Washington Carver Park, Georgia’s first state park for African Americans.“It’s where my mom and dad were in business and they were people who really believed in the American dream,” Benham said.Benham said he learned valuable life lessons while water skiing the section of Lake Allatoona in Acworth, Georgia.“Being the smallest person, I was always atop of the pyramid,” he said. “The lesson I learned then was that sometimes you can do things perfectly and still fail at it.”Benham says those experiences helped him become the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court of Georgia. There was one incident, however, that impacted his life more than others: when he was denied using the front door at the park’s main office.“My dad stepped up and said, ‘this is my son, he can go in anybody’s front door and if you ever step in his way that will be the last step you make,’” Benham said. That decision would cost Benham’s father his job, but would prove to be a turning point in both of their lives.“He said, ‘there’s some things you have to do be a man,’” Benham said of his father. “’And if you can’t stand up for your children, what can you stand up for?’”While Benham describes the waters at George Washington Carver Park as almost spiritual. He says they also had a huge impact physically. During his the Benham family’s time there, this section of the lake was the only lake in northwest Georgia where African Americans were allowed to swim.“For some people this was the first time they had an opportunity to swim because they couldn’t swim in the various facilities in town,” Benham said.In an area where Confederate flags still fly today, George Washington Carver Park is now open to everyone while Benham is now retired as a judge.Looking back on the past, he believes the recreation area has helped with the future of race relations.“If they work on the things that they have in common than the things that separate them will be less significant,” Benham said. 2483

BRUCE TOWNSHIP, Michigan — A company that supplies equipment to the University Hospitals fertility center said its storage tank did not malfunction. “The early stages of our investigation into this unfortunate incident indicate it was the result of human error,” Custom Biogenic Systems said in a detailed statement sent to E.W. Scripps Co. TV station WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio.In a letter to patients on March 26, University Hospitals said that a remote alarm system on a storage tank that was designed to alert a University Hospitals employee to changes like temperature swings was turned off. UH said that on the evening of Saturday, March 3, the temperature inside the tank, which contained thousands of eggs and embryos, rose. UH does not know when the alarm was turned off. During the period when the alarm was off, UH said it had been experiencing “difficulty with what is called the liquid nitrogen automatic fill on the storage tank” for “several weeks.” Liquid nitrogen is added to the storage tank to keep specimens frozen, and it can be added manually or automatically. According to UH, “We had been working with the tank manufacturer who had previously provided instructions on the necessary maintenance to ‘thaw’ the storage tank to correct this difficulty. To do that required transferring all specimens to an extra storage tank previously provided by the manufacturer. This process takes several weeks, and had begun when this event occurred, though no eggs or embryos had yet been moved to the extra tank.”Custom Biogenic Systems, of Bruce Township, Mich., says the extra tank was available to UH on Aug. 15, 2017, UH finalized its arrangements for delivery of the tank on Oct. 27, 2017, and the tank was delivered on Nov. 2, 2017. That’s almost four months to the day before 950 UH patients lost 4,000 eggs and embryos in an event the hospital would later call “catastrophic." With the automatic fill not working on the original tank, UH added liquid nitrogen to the tank manually. This was done by connecting the storage tank with a line to a tank of liquid nitrogen from the Embryology Lab. But, according to UH, “For several days prior to the weekend in question, a manual fill could not be done using the line in the Embryology Lab because there were no liquid nitrogen tanks available. So, containers of liquid nitrogen were obtained from the Andrology Lab. Those containers were then manually poured into the top of the tank, while amounts of liquid nitrogen and temperature were monitored.” Custom Biogenic Systems says its tank is not designed to be filled by liquid nitrogen poured into the top of the tank. The company said its product manual states:  2744

Big tech made a show on Sunday night and Monday of moving against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his media company InfoWars. But Apple and Google are both still selling its app, which contains some of the same type of content that both tech giants have pulled from elsewhere on their platforms. It's unclear how long the app has been available in the two app stores, but InfoWars has been publicizing the app's availability since at least July 13.Both stores categorize InfoWars as "news." On the Apple App Store, InfoWars' app has gone as high as #23 among free news apps, ahead of offerings from legitimate news outlets like the Associated Press, CBS News, USA Today, NPR, Bloomberg, MSNBC, Washington Post, NBC News, Politico and the Financial Times.InfoWars and Jones regularly traffic in conspiracy theories, including the claim that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax and that the September 11, 2001 terror attacks were an inside job.The InfoWars podcasts that Apple removed from the iTunes store are recordings of the company's live shows -- which are still being streamed live and hosted through the app available through Apple's app store.Last week, Apple declined to comment for this story. But asked on Monday why the app remained live even after the podcasts had been pulled, an Apple spokesperson responded in a statement, "Apple does not tolerate hate speech, and we have clear guidelines that creators and developers must follow to ensure we provide a safe environment for all of our users. Podcasts that violate these guidelines are removed from our directory making them no longer searchable or available for download or streaming. We believe in representing a wide range of views, so long as people are respectful to those with differing opinions."A Google spokesperson told CNN, "While we don't comment on specific apps, we can confirm that our content policies are designed to provide a great experience for users and developers. If an app violates our policies, we take action."Both Apple and Google approve all apps sold in their stores. Any developer who has an app approved can then apply to have that app listed as "news;" the companies do not limit the category only to those created by legitimate news outlets.Apple and Google did not respond to CNN's inquiries about whether it was appropriate to list the conspiracy theory website in the same category as legitimate news organizations.Apple does explicitly say it may ban apps for objectionable content, such as "Defamatory, discriminatory, or mean-spirited content, including references or commentary about religion, race, sexual orientation, gender, national/ethnic origin, or other targeted groups..."Google has similar language, saying it does not allow "apps that promote violence, or incite hatred against individuals or groups based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, age, nationality, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or any other characteristic that is associated with systemic discrimination or marginalization."In addition to its conspiracy theories, InfoWars and Jones publish content that is Islamaphobic, xenophobic and/or transphobic to their sites, in addition to pushing it on their live streams. Either way, it would then end up in the apps.InfoWars recently published to both apps an article that claimed to reveal the "transgenderism movement" was created to "ultimately collapse society." It also recently published to both apps a claim that former CIA director John Brennan converted to "radical Islam and was a registered communist." Another post encouraged people to watch something it described as "Islamic invasion ships slam into Spain." The footage was of a migrant boat landing on a Spanish beach.InfoWars did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment. In a message posted Monday on Twitter, after the other platforms had taken down some of his and his company's content, Jones told his fans to watch live streams on the InfoWars website, calling it "the one platform that they CAN'T ban."Apple and Google have both banned apps before.Gab, which bills itself as a conservative alternative to Twitter from their app stores, was blocked by Apple in January 2017 over what Apple termed hate speech. Google pulled the app from their store in August 2017 over hate speech as well.At the time, Gab founder Andrew Torba told Mashable that it was another example of the "ideological echo chamber in Silicon Valley.""You see all these companies one after another coming out with the same exact message, same exact stance," he said. "There's nobody saying 'no, we stand for free speech. We hate some of the vile things that are said.' Either you support free speech or you do not. Period."Just last month, Apple removed the conspiracy theory app "QDrops" from its stores after NBC News reported that the app pushed the "QAnon" conspiracy theory. The QDrops app had until the removal been one of the top paid apps in the "entertainment" category in the Apple store; it's still on sale in the Google app store. 5086

BEIJING — The U.S. says it has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston “to protect American intellectual property" and the private information of Americans. However the U.S. State Department did not elaborate on what prompted the closure. China is strongly condemning the move, which comes at a time of rising tensions between the world’s two largest economies. A spokesperson for the State Department told CNN that China "has engaged for years in massive illegal spying and influence operations" and that those "activities have increased markedly in scale and scope over the past few years."A foreign ministry spokesperson called it “an outrageous and unjustified move that will sabotage relations between the two countries.” He warned of firm countermeasures if the U.S. does not reverse its decision, which he said the consulate was informed of on Tuesday. 876
