SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Californians voted to pass Proposition 22 – reclassifying rideshare drivers as independent contractors. But, companies like Uber and Lyft are still battling lawsuits from the state claiming billions in wage theft.The legal battle over rideshare drivers did not end with the passing of Prop 22. The California Labor Commissioner is still suing gig companies for not following current law which classifies drivers as employees instead of independent contractors.The Labor Commissioner’s Office is seeking billions for unpaid minimum wage, overtime, sick leave, and business expenses.Nicole Moore with Rideshare Drivers United led the fight against Prop 22. She says since the new law is not retroactive those lawsuits still stand.“This is about back pay that under the law as it was over the last three years, those drivers are still owed that money,” said Moore. “It was .3 billion that were owed to those drivers. Half of that is damages but the other half is just straight pay that under labor law.”Some drivers had to file for unemployment when the pandemic hit, including those with pre-existing conditions hoping to limit exposure to the virus. Others are unable to drive since they have to stay home with kids now out of school for distance learning.Moore says those unemployment protections won’t last once the new law takes over.“If you don’t have unemployment that’s when people become homeless, that’s when kids go hungry. We need that safety net as workers,” said Moore.As San Diego moves into the state’s purple tier, Tonje Ettesvoll says she’ll have to limit hours to reduce her risk of exposure. She says the move for her own safety may prevent her from qualifying for benefits under Prop 22.“I will not be doing my 60 hours a week. I’ll be doing maybe 30 so I may be one of those people who don’t qualify and will have to be on Medi-Cal,” said Ettesvoll. “And that is an expense that’s not Uber’s and Lyft’s. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of SR-163 closures throughout the week. According to the agency, all lanes of north and southbound SR-163 between I-8 and Genesee Avenue for three to six nights. The highway will be closed so crews can remove falsework from the bridge on the SR-163 Friars Road overcrossing. The southbound closures will begin at 11 p.m. with the northbound closures starting at 11:30 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. The list below shows which lanes will be closed on certain nights: Sunday: All southbound lanes, the northbound far right collector lane and the right main lane (slow lane).Monday: No full freeway closure. Only the northbound and southbound right main lanes.Tuesday: All southbound lanes, and the northbound left lane (fast lane).Wednesday: All northbound lanes, and the southbound left lane.Thursday: No full freeway closures. Only the northbound right lane.Friday/Saturday: No freeway work scheduledSunday, March 10: All northbound lanes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Caltrans is starting a yearlong pilot program in San Diego to reduce wrong-way driving.The agency has installed markings at 30 locations that include red arrows and "DO NOT ENTER" written across the pavement that are only legible when driving in the wrong direction onto freeway ramps.The markings will stay up until the end of the year, according to Caltrans.The agency says that a previous three-year pilot program helped reduce wrong-way driving by 44% in San Diego. The program utilized special reflectors, sensors, and illuminated signs in early 2018.Now, those specialized reflectors have been installed on hundreds of miles of highways, according to Caltrans."The number of wrong-way drivers decreased significantly during the initial pilot program," said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. "The addition of these markings, along with what we have learned thus far, will go a long way as we continue to study ways to deter wrong-way drivers."While wrong-way crashes only account for less than 1% of all crashes on California's highways, they are often among the deadliest, Caltrans said."We are constantly looking for ways to improve safety on the transportation system," said Caltrans (San Diego area) District 11 Director Gustavo Dallarda. "If the testing of this new product is successful, it could provide a new tool to reduce wrong-way driving." 1383

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crime Stoppers released photos Wednesday to find a man and woman suspected of two armed robberies in Otay Mesa and Pacific Beach. The first robbery happened the afternoon of Sunday, July 28 at Tepito Club, a clothing store at 2364 Roll Drive. Police said the pair selected merchandise and approached the clerk, then the woman pulled a gun and demanded cash. The couple took the money and drove off in a blue Toyota Corolla. One day later, police said the two suspects gathered items at the Chevron gas station at 1575 Garnet Ave., eventually demanding cash from the clerk. The man and woman walked away from the area with the money, police said. The suspects are both white, according to Crime Stoppers. The woman is 5’6”, thin, and was wearing a black tank top and grey leggings. The man has a medium build, and is about 30 years old with tattoos. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. Information leading to an arrest can result in a ,000 reward. 1012

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded Wednesday after a car slammed into the side of a motel in Point Loma.According to firefighters, the crash happened on the 1300 block of Scott Street at the Vagabond Inn San Diego Airport Marina.The driver was parked in the Point Loma Seafood parking lot when she reportedly hit the gas, driving through a fence and smashing into the side of the motel.The crash created a hole in a bathroom of one of the motel rooms. No one was injured in the crash. 499
