SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just days after her 97th birthday, a San Diego woman was honored for being a trailblazer in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Maj. Grace Carle's love for her country is apparent in her impressive resume. The retired Marine served during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam."She's always been a strong woman. She did what she was told to do, and she did it with honor. She wanted to be proud of what she did," said Jennie Larsen, Carle's niece. Carle was one of nine siblings and joined the Marine Corps when she was 20. She's now the last living Sergeant Major of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and was one of only six women to hold the position. "When she went in she worked hard to get all of her advancements, and it's things like giving the women a chance to do jobs that the men had been doing and showing that the women were capable of holding these same positions and doing the same type of work," said Larsen.Carle was recently admitted to Somerset Subacute and Care, where social worker Lisa Abbott met the retired Marine. "When they told me she was a big deal in the Marines, I started googling her!" Abbott said.Carle will soon be entering hospice care, so Abbott decided they needed to honor her. "Somebody like Ms. Carle who's done so much for our country, and for America, and for women in general, this is going to be probably our last chance to thank her and honor her. While she's with us, we're going to take that opportunity," said Abbott. They held a ceremony for Carle at the facility, which included taps by Bugles Across America."The Marine life was her life, and she was very proud to serve this country, you couldn't have asked for a better person," said Larsen.Larsen says her aunt served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of National Pool Opening Day and in anticipation of the summer season, San Diego leaders will hold a community water safety festival Saturday.The 10th annual "April Pools Day" event will be held at Bud Kearns Pool, at 2229 Morely Field Dr., featuring swim assessments, CPR demonstrations, and safety presentations to educate about safe water practices.The event will also hold a cannonball kickoff and giant inflatable obstacle course for kids.RELATED: National Pool Opening Day signals summertime swimmingThe community water festival is aimed at waterproofing San Diego, through a multi-step approach to drowning prevention, swimming lessons, and beach safety training.As San Diego readies itself for the summer, the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego will also hold a number of free swimming lessons and CPR demonstrations around the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar broke ground Friday on its first hangar to house the F-35, the most advanced fighter jet in the world.While the plane may be controversial, the hope is to replace aging aircraft. The new project will also include a flightline expansion."We're building new F-35 joint strike fighters and we're going to send them right here to Miramar,” President Trump said in his visit to the base Tuesday.Congressman Scott Peters and other military leaders were in attendance at the groundbreaking, thrilled about finally moving these projects forward."We're really taking care of the nation's defense," said Rep. Peters, representing the 52nd District. "One of the things when I went to the Armed Services Committee was to make sure that this facility was high on the list of priorities," he said. Harper Construction won the bid and will employ about 2000 workers.  The 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s."We need to upgrade the infrastructure, the connections, the systems inside the hangers," said Col. Jason Woodworth, the Commanding Officer at MCAS Miramar.While critics have pointed to design flaws and skyrocketing costs on the new planes, the military says aging aircraft like the F/A-18 hornets are becoming tougher to maintain."Older airplanes are like that telephone on your wall you had when you were a kid with the rotary dial on it," Woodworth said. "[The] cell phone in your pocket, that's the F-35 that does it all.""3rd Marine Aircraft Wing was more excited than anybody here," said Asst. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local and federal authorities raided four San Diego County homes Wednesday as part of a money laundering investigation.Agents served one of those warrants at an El Cajon home at about 7 a.m., according to neighbors. Agents could be seen removing several items from the property. 10News observed agents searching through the first and second floors of the home. Neighbors told 10News agents made requests over a speaker for the home's residents to exit the property. Neighbors added that eventually, the announcements stopped and they heard what they described as a small explosion, before agents entered the home in tactical gear.RELATED: Ex-Wells Fargo banker indicted for money laundering appears in courtLauren Mack, with the Department of Homeland Security, told 10News the raid was one of five instances in which agents served search warrants as part of an investigation into a suspected money laundering conspiracy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If you owe San Diego County property taxes, the deadline to pay is not changing.The County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office tells 10News state law governs when property taxes are due and payable.In a statement, a spokesperson for the department said, “The second installment of property taxes is due no later than April 10. State action would be required to change the date. Critical county, school, and local city financial obligations are dependent on property taxes. They fund essential public services, including coronavirus response.”Several local politicians have pushed for state officials to change the deadline to allow property owners to pay their taxes late without consequence.Last week, San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry wrote a letter to the governor asking him to consider an Executive Order directing all county treasurer-tax collectors to defer April 10, 2020, property tax payments until July 15, 2020. The letter states, “This is in line with the announcement that both the Internal Revenue Service and California Franchise Tax Board are postponing tax deadlines until July 15, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez has publicly asked San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister to waive late payment penalties.“State law already allows Mr. McAllister to waive any fees and the 10 percent penalty for late payments on a case-by-case basis. I would urge him to use that power to relieve San Diego County’s homeowners and businesses of these penalties during this dire situation we are experiencing,” Gonzalez said in a statement to 10News.The California Association of County Treasurers and Tax Collectors posted a statement on its website stating that tax collectors have the authority to handle specific scenarios where a taxpayer cannot physically pay their taxes on April 10 due to quarantine, illness or closure of the tax collector’s office as a result of COVID-19. The statement continues, “In such cases, the Tax Collector will utilize their authority pursuant to Revenue and Taxation Code (RTC) 4985.2. to waive interest or penalties that would otherwise be imposed or collected with respect to a delinquent second installment of property taxes levied for the 2019-2020 fiscal year on residential real property.”The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office told 10News that McAllister has no authority to extend the April 10 deadline as outlined in state law. However, taxpayers unable to pay on time can submit a penalty cancellation request after the April 10 deadline. The department reviews these requests on a case-by-case basis, and general guidelines are provided on the request form. A spokesperson for the office said all property owners who can pay their taxes on time are encouraged to do so.
