SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine is approved this week, UC San Diego Health anticipates receiving its first allocation of the vaccine next week.The vaccine will be considered on Thursday by the Food and Drug Administration. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local activists are accusing the city of San Diego of slow-playing their proposal to create an independent commission on police practices - to the point that it died.The measure would have created a board with subpoena power. And the ability to launch its own investigations.The board, which would have been called the Independent Commission Police Practices, would have addressed several of the concerns raised by the County Grand Jury about the city's Community Review Board.Those concerns include a lack of subpoena power, access to only some complaints, and an appearance some find too closely linked to the San Diego Police Department. Women Occupy San Diego's proposed an independent board that would have subpoena power."We would have independent investigators who would talk to the witnesses, who would look at all the documents, who would do the same things that (Internal Affairs) does," said Kate Yavenditti, a local attorney and one of the group's members.Women Occupy San Diego filed the measure in March, but earlier this month the City Attorney's said the San Diego Police Officers Association and the Municipal Employees Association needed to be consulted before it could go to the November ballot, due to a law called the Meyers Milias Brown Act.A city attorney memo said the the organizations needed to be conferred with because the measure could impact their working conditions.Yavenditti said she learned of this at a rules committee meeting on July 11, and the City Council didn't docket the issue until Monday, just less than two weeks before the Registrar of Voters deadline for the November ballot.It was too close, so the council voted not to move it forward."At this point, there's nothing we can do about it except talk about what we believe was a deliberate delay," Yavenditti said. A city spokeswoman said this measure was treated the same as all the others that were vying for the November ballot. Jack Schaeffer, president of the San Diego Police Officers Association, said he stood by the current Community Review Board. He noted it has trained experts doing investigations, they pick apart all the evidence and come to appropriate conclusions."It's almost like a big audit of what we’ve done as investigators," he said. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. The 2020 Rental Affordability Report consisting of census data compiled by ATTOM Data Solutions broke down the figures for counties nationwide. Although the price of owning a median-priced three-bedroom home was more affordable than renting in 53 percent of U.S. counties studied, renting was a better financial decision in highly populated suburban or urban areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kreg Van Hoesen has had to fight for his life for much of his life, born with congenital heart defects in 1986 when doctors didn't know until after he was born. Two surgeries at two months of age would be followed by two more at two years old. Then when Kreg was six, doctors tried to correct the defects in his heart. Unfortunately it didn't work. His mother, Pam Van Hoesen remembers every detail of the family's hard fought battle to keep Kreg alive. "His outlook was bleak," she says, "but he managed to get through it and within a week, he got a heart." They know the donor heart came from a family in the Midwest who lost a child traumatically, but they've never heard back from them after writing letters, and they understand. Pam says, "for someone else to lose a child in order for your child to live is mind boggling."To pay forward that most precious gift, the family became champions of organ donation. It started eight years after Kreg got his heart. Pam Van Hoesen's friend needed a kidney. Pam tested and hers was the best match. Then in 2003 Kreg went into kidney failure. The anti-rejection drugs from Kreg's heart transplant were very hard on his kidneys, and when he needed a kidney transplant, his dad Mark stepped in. Kreg initially rejected Mark's kidney however, and he almost lost his battle to survive again. Eventually his body accepted it, and he had 16 years with that kidney. But Kreg's health took a turn for the worse early this year. All three of his sisters tested to find the best match. Kreg's sister Kendyl was the closest match. Kendyl's mother-in-law also happened to be a kidney donor as well, and with both of her own parents living healthy lives with just one kidney, Kendyl didn't hesitate to agree to donate hers to her brother. She explains that the entire family was nervous going into this surgery. They knew as the donor, their family had a long track record of success living with just one kidney, but they worried about how Kreg would do, undergoing his third transplant surgery. "He's a real fighter and real survivor... but most of his surgeries didn't go as planned." It so happens that Kreg was due for success however, and this transplant, which was done at UCSD Medical Center, has been his easiest so far. The family, including Kreg, believe their mission is to get out the word about organ donation. Kreg says he's shocked by how many people are apprehensive about it, whether a living donation, or a donation after someone dies. "I do hope this can change the perspective," he says. 2568
