CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A skate park that was once riddled with graffiti is getting a grand homecoming in the South Bay.The City of Chula Vista will hold a grand reopening of the Len Moore Skate Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with raffles, prizes., local vendors, live music, and demonstrations by skating pros. The Boys and Girls Club closed the park last August due to costly maintenance and repair issues. This led to the organization giving up the park to the city.Since that time, though, vandalism and graffiti became a constant concern, which led to the park's reopening in February. City officials will now monitor the park for cleanliness and graffiti."Before the city could actually open it up there were some minor maintenance things that we needed to take care of. There were some ramps that needed to be taken out and demolished. There was a lot of graffiti," Gil Contreras, principal recreations manager with the City of Chula Vista, said.Community members had a say in the park's reopening as well. A series of community meetings asked the public what they wanted out of the park, the priority being the ability to skate for free. The park will also offer skate classes, day camps, and birthday party rentals.RESOURCES: Learning how to skateboard"We definitely took everything into consideration when reopening the park. [Community members] were concerned about the graffiti and the vandalism and things like that," Contreras said. "We did reassure them ... we have park rangers who frequently visit all of our parks. We have a staff who actually comes through every day and just kind of gets an idea and looks at everything and talks to the patrons."Since February's reopening, Contreras says all the city has received are positive remarks. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk to skateboarding, BMX bikes, scooters, in-line skating, and roller skating. All skaters must wear a helmet, and elbow and knee pads at all times.Contreras says the city will continue to look at elements skaters desire at the park to expand the park's offerings."This park is for everybody and we want to make sure everybody in Chula Vista can enjoy it," he added.Looking for a skate park in your community? CHICAGO, Ill. – The shopping frenzy at the outset of the pandemic gave many Americans their first taste of what it’s like to not have access to basic necessities. But it’s a reality that communities of color have faced for decades.A chance errand to Chicago’s west side taught entrepreneur Liz Abunaw that access to groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables was a luxury.“I'm on a commercial corridor in a Black neighborhood and none of this stuff is readily available and it didn't sit right with me,” said Abunaw. The New York native and business school graduate decided to do something about it. She started a social enterprise to bring fresh produce to the neighborhood.“When I was thinking of a name for this business, I wanted something that was distinctly rooted in Black culture,” said Abunaw.Forty Acres Fresh Market is a reference to Special Field Orders No. 15. Issued by General William T. Sherman in 1865, it promised 40 acres of land and mules for freed slaves to settle land in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. It was revoked months later by President Andrew Johnson.“It's a cruel irony that the descendants of this country's first farmers now live in neighborhoods where they can get nothing from the earth,” she said. While more than 23 million Americans live in so-called "food deserts," researchers say food inequity disproportionately affects communities of color.“What I see is this unequal food system in this country,” said Abunaw. “I started calling it by what it is. It's food apartheid.”Originally, Abunaw started with pop-up markets and a plan to go brick and mortar. But the pandemic shifted operations. Home deliveries have more than tripled.“One thing the pandemic did was it made everybody realize what it could be like to live with food insecurity even if you're more affluent,” said Abunaw. Each day, warehouse supervisor Tracy Smith goes through the online orders, selecting and hand packing fruits and vegetables for what they call a "mix-it-up bag."“I just went through the line and picked what I thought went together,” said Smith.A recipe card helps consumers decide how to cook the fresh produce. For now, Abunaw is focused on continuing to scale up as she chips away at food inequity, one neighborhood at a time.“The consumers here deserve goods and services that are of high quality. I think that they deserve to have their dollars respected and that's what we do.” 2415

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (CNS) - A report on five possible sites for a future Cal State University campus, including in Chula Vista, states that none of the sites would be a suitable candidate based on enrollment demand alone, according to a report presented Tuesday to the CSU Board of Trustees. The report stems from a study undertaken to assess the potential need for a new campus in Chula Vista, as well as the cities of Concord and Palm Desert, and the counties of San Mateo and San Joaquin. The study -- which can be viewed at https://www.csucapacitystudy.org -- examines various factors regarding a potential CSU site in Chula Vista's University and Innovation District. The study found that CSU enrollment is projected to increase "moderately" over the next 15 years, with the San Diego area projected to see 5,700 more full-time CSU students by 2035.RELATED: Chula Vista on shortlist for potential California State University campusWhile the report concluded the projected enrollment demand does not warrant a new campus, the study did not account for COVID-19's possible enrollment impacts, as CSU's pandemic-related transition to virtual education occurred during the compilation of the study. The study also noted, however, that systemwide CSU enrollment exceeds the current physical capacity by an average of 17% or 57,300 full-time students. The estimated cost to establish a new campus ranges from billion to billion, with the timeline to develop a new campus estimated at nine years, according to the report. 1528

CINCINNATI – Rachel Smith was pregnant and terrified. She started leaking amniotic fluid in January after a garbage truck hit the car she was driving. Smith was in the hospital for two weeks while doctors tried to prevent her from going into labor. Her baby girl was coming seven weeks too early, and she didn’t have a safe place for the newborn to sleep once they got home.A nonprofit organization called Healthy Homes Block by Block came to Smith’s rescue, providing a new, portable crib for baby Dé’ja when she was strong enough to leave the hospital.“We wouldn’t have had a safe sleep space for her,” Smith said. "We wasn't prepared at that point, and she just happened to come."Now little Dé’ja is happy and thriving. But Healthy Homes Block by Block is worried other babies throughout Cincinnati’s East and Lower Price Hill neighborhoods won’t be as fortunate. That’s because the U.S. tariffs on goods from China have increased the cost of the portable cribs that Healthy Homes Block by Block gives away, and the nonprofit doesn’t have any more to distribute. 1071

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help after they say several suspects stole credit cards and used them to go shopping at Macy’s.Police say a house on the 400 block of Vista Way was burglarized on January 10. The suspects took cash and credit cards, according to authorities.Just hours after the burglary, police say the suspects used one of the victim’s credit cards at the Macy’s located in the Chula Vista Mall.Anyone with information is asked to call 619-422-8477. 507
