Sandy Hook, Orlando, Aurora, Las Vegas, and now Sutherland Springs, Texas. As we struggle to find answers and to come to terms with the reality of mass shootings, one of the key questions is, why?What drives some people to carry out unthinkable attacks? And what do mass shooters tend to have in common?Dr. Richard Cooter is a forensic psychologist at George Washington University. He specializes in mass shootings, and the mind of a killer. “You will have some people who are true psychopaths. That's relatively rare,” he said. “The majority of these folks, and they’re men, they have a grievance of some sort.  It may be real, it may be imagined.  But whatever it is, it is real to them.”An FBI report released in 2014 looked at 160 active shootings and found gunmen almost always acted alone, were usually male, had a wide range of ages, and killed themselves about 40 percent of the time.But what makes a person want to carry out such a horrific crime in the first place? Cooter says something makes them lose empathy and disconnect from their conscience. Often, he says they become overwhelmingly angry.  “They tend to isolate from people and they just ruminate over this grievance and over a period of time they will come to a point they can’t stand it anymore," he said.The Sandy Hook shooter was apparently mad at his mother. The Pulse nightclub shooter who pledged allegiance to ISIS was said to be “angry at the world,” Cooter said.Cooter believes they may let the anger simmer, building until it makes them direct their rage at society.Other shooters are what he would consider highly psychotic and unable to feel remorse.  He points to the shooter who opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Doctors testified he had a psychotic mental illness. The gunman who targeted Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords and others was diagnosed with schizophrenia.Cooter says there’s another factor. For the deeply disturbed, a mass shooting can offer instant fame and a way to make their lives seem to have meaning.  “They become famous for a while. They’re usually not around to know it, but that’s the plan,” Cooter said. "There seem to be copycat sorts of things.”Even so, Cooter says there are plenty of people who have deep anger or other hallmarks of a mass shooter, but it’s extremely rare to actually decide to kill scores of innocent people. 2434

(KGTV) -- Dozens of migrants seeking asylum in the United States are being processed Tuesday afternoon, according to an attorney.Eight migrants were allowed in for processing Monday night followed by dozens more Tuesday afternoon and evening. The rest of the migrant caravan is waiting in Tijuana to be allowed in and processed. The attorney, who is working with the group of migrants, said members of the caravan were asked to choose among themselves who would be processed.MAP: Where is the migrant caravan from?Women and children were reportedly in the first groups of migrants selected Monday and Tuesday. An official with U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that, although this group of migrants has been gaining national attention, the process the group is going through is standard.As far as the process the migrants are going through, CBP said that individuals who don’t have proper travel documents and try to enter into the U.S. may be subject to expedited removal.PHOTOS: Migrant caravan makes way to U.S-Mexico borderThose in expedited removal who express fear of return are then referred to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.Migrants then go through a “fear interview” to determine whether or not they have a credible fear of persecution or torture.The San Ysidro border inspection facility can hold 300 people. At times, this has required us to limit the number of people we can bring in the port facility for processing at a given time, including in 2016 when an influx of Haitians arrived at the California border, and as recently as within the past six months. In recent days, San Ysidro has exceeded port capacity due to an increase in arrivals of undocumented persons making asylum claims or presenting complex cases. Accordingly, CBP has had to limit the number of new arrivals for processing. CBP will continue to work with its interagency partners at ICE to ensure continued management of persons presenting without documents and appropriate care and custody of all those in our facility,” the spokesperson said in part.Migrants with the caravan have made their trip to the U.S.-Mexico border from three different countries in Central America. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Isaias snapped trees and knocked out power while blowing through the Bahamas on Saturday.The storm made landfall over Grand Bahama Island on Saturday. The Bahamas are still attempting to rebuild from Hurricane Dorian in 2019, a storm that killed dozens and caused heavy damage to the island chain. The storm will then head toward the Florida coast, where officials have closed beaches, parks and coronavirus testing sites.As of the 11 a.m. Sunday advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Isaias was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was moving north-northwest at 8 mph.Florida authorities say they've prepared shelters, but so far don't expect to have to evacuate people. Gov. Ron DeSantis says the most important thing now is to "remain vigilant.” The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the maximum sustained winds weakened slightly to 80 miles per hour Saturday morning as it moved toward the Florida coast.Current NOAA forecasts show that Isaias could make landfall near Florida's east coast on Sunday. Current models show the storm traveling up the Eastern Seaboard, brining heavy rains and winds to coastal areas of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina by early next week. 1232

SANTEE, Calif. (CNS) - A San Diego County Sheriff's Department employee was behind bars Thursday morning on suspicion of burglary and identity theft, authorities said.Estella Velez, a 54-year-old licensed vocational nurse at the Vista Detention Facility, and her alleged accomplice, 44-year-old Raul Rios, were taken into custody Wednesday, sheriff's Lt. Nancy Blanco said.The pair is suspected of stealing a woman's purse in the 5500 block of Mission Road in Bonsall on July 10, then using the victim's credit card at several locations in North County, Blanco said.Rios and Velez were also seen on video surveillance in two attempted commercial burglaries in the 1700 block of East Vista Way in Vista on July 21 and 23, the lieutenant said.Velez was booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee and Rios was booked into San Diego Central Jail, according to jail records. They both face multiple felony counts of burglary, conspiracy and theft.Velez was being held in lieu of 5,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Aug. 14. Rios was being held in lieu of 0,000 bail and his arraignment was also set for Aug. 14. 1156

(KGTV) - Customs and Border Protection officials tweeted thermal camera video Friday of men climbing the U.S.-Mexico border fence and damaging the concertina wire.The video was recorded by U.S. Border Patrol cameras placed near Border Field State Park in Imperial Beach, opposite from where migrants have been gathering as more members of the Central American caravan arrive in Tijuana.There was no word on whether the incident captured on video led to an arrest.The Department of Defense confirmed with 10News that military troops are at Ream Field in Imperial Beach to assist in Border enforcement. The Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force members here, consist of 400 Marines out of Camp Pendelton, as well as an Army Military Police Battalion. The Marines will be unarmed, focusing primarily on logistical support. The Army Police will help with security.“All seeking to enter the U.S. are urged to do so at one of more than 320 official U.S. Ports of Entry,” Customs and Border Protection officials wrote in the tweet.  1069
