A cipher sent in 1969 by the Zodiac Killer has been solved.In an email to EW Scripps, the Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that three "private citizens cracked the cipher.""On Dec. 5, the FBI received the solution to a cipher popularly known as Z340 from a cryptologic researcher and independently verified the decryption," the FBI said in a statement. "Cipher Z340 is one of four ciphers attributed to the Zodiac Killer. This cipher was first submitted to the FBI Laboratory on Nov. 13, 1969, but not successfully decrypted. Over the past 51 years, CRRU has reviewed numerous proposed solutions from the public--none of which had merit."According to the Associated Press, code experts from the United States, Australia, and Belgium solved it.The code was first sent to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper in 1969 by the Zodiac Killer, who murdered five people between 1968 and 1969 in the Bay Area.According to The Chronicle, David Oranchak, one of the three to crack the cipher, has worked on Zodiac's codes since 2006.Oranchak told the newspaper that the cipher included sentences like "I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me" and that the killer wasn't "afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise all the sooner."Cameron Polan, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s San Francisco office, told E.W. Scripps in an email that the case of the Zodiac Killer "remains an ongoing investigation.""The Zodiac Killer terrorized multiple communities across Northern California and even though decades have gone by, we continue to seek justice for the victims of these brutal crimes," Polan said in the email. "Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, and out of respect for the victims and their families, we will not be providing further comment at this time."This marks the second Zodiac Killer cipher that has been cracked, according to the newspaper. A Dundalk couple says they’re trying to figure out who’s responsible after a carnival accident on Friday.A day at a carnival for David Nagel, his wife Stacy, and their 2-year-old grandson was going great until David and Levi were on board the carnival’s merry-go-round.“I grabbed my grandson,” David said. “Ran away from the [the carousel] and got my grandson over the fence to my wife, and then I went back to make sure that everybody else was ok because there was a young lady with two younger kids behind me.”Part of the merry-go-round collapsed with close to 40 people on or nearby.Stacy watched in horror, capturing the entire incident on her smartphone.“It was his first time ever on a merry-go-round. He’s two. He never wanted to get on before and we didn’t push him. He just wanted to get on the merry-go-round so we had to film it. Thank gosh we did,” she said.Firefighters along with ride inspectors worked on the ride for almost an hour.Then the ride went back into service – not against protocol according to state inspectors.The ride services’ owner, Shaw & Sons Amusements, says the state handles inspections.“A major breakdown is a stoppage of operation from any cause that results in damage, failure, or breakage of a structural or stress bearing part of an amusement attraction,” Matt Helminiak, the Commissioner of Labor and Industry – over the amusement ride and safety inspection division, said.By phone, he said if no one was injured or if there weren’t a major breakdown, the state wouldn’t even be alerted.The incident on Friday wasn’t enough to shut the ride down.Still, Helminiak says the state will look at what went wrong with the merry-go-round.“In the case of a mobile ride, every time that ride is set up, a state inspector inspects it before anybody is allowed to ride it, but the operators themselves have a daily inspection requirement and so they inspect it and keep a log of inspections and then have that available for us,” he said.An unsettling feeling for David, who says he wants to see a change in the inspection process, no matter if someone is injured.“I went, number one, to bring back memories and number two – to share joy. It was supposed to be a joyous time. A California university is using testing and contact tracing to stop a large outbreak of Covid-19 among fraternity houses, according to media reports.The University of Southern California has reported at least 150 positive coronavirus cases. Los Angeles-area media reports that dozens of those cases were traced to three or four fraternities near campus.The fraternity houses are off-campus, and it is not clear if the infected people were fraternity members or just students renting a room for the summer.Dr. Sarah Van Orman, chief health officer of USC Student Health, does not believe the students got Covid-19 from a party."And because people live in close proximity, they sort of spread it to each other," Van Orman told ABC7. "It was not large fraternity parties, they were small gatherings, but unfortunately, it was enough to allow it to spread to these communities."Van Orman said the number of cases at the university “dropped dramatically.” She said since the first report of cases on July 9, the university has used continued testing and contract tracing to identify exposed people. 1102

A Charlotte County, Florida mom was arrested Wednesday morning after she accidentally ran into her son in the drop-off area of the Port Charlotte High School parking lot.According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, 49-year-old Nadine Williams has a suspended license and gave false identification at the scene.  Williams' son was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.Deputies said they found Williams had a suspension for unpaid traffic fines and a failure to maintain insurance. They also said they found a citation for driving without a license just days before the incident Wednesday morning. When deputies asked her about the suspension, they said she told them she knew she was suspended, but she had to drive because it wasn't "like I'm murdering or raping."  815
