SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In response to safety concerns, a growing number of downtown San Diego public restrooms are being staffed with armed security guards.The city of San Diego has added armed guards to secure the public restrooms outside the San Diego Civic Theatre.The 6-month contract began in April and costs 0,000.00. It’s the latest downtown public restroom location to be staffed with armed security.Over the winter, armed security guards started being stationed at two other downtown public restroom locations, 13th St. and G St., and Park Blvd. and 11th Ave.RELATED: City may seek armed guards at Central Library, other parksThe Civic Theater public restrooms have a history of safety issues and a heavy transient population. San Diego police confirm that last fall, a city employee was reportedly beaten by a man who was trying to bring a shopping cart into one of the stalls.Patrons tell 10News that people are known to use drugs and sleep inside the restrooms. “Some of [the people] have bad tempers so you have to have the means to protect yourself,” says Allstate security guard Herbert Bridges.He’s one of the new guards outside the Civic Theatre, armed with a 9mm handgun. He says he and his coworkers are also allowed to carry batons and pepper spray.“We will never use weapons unless it’s absolutely necessary," he adds.In January, 10News’ Jon Horn broke the story that the city was looking at the possibility putting armed security guards inside various city buildings with heavy transient populations, like the Downtown Library.The city confirms it’s still several months until that could become a reality. 1649

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three people are dead following a crash on Interstate 805 in University City.The California Highway Patrol says the crash happened in the northbound lanes of I-805 at Miramar Road around 4:30 p.m.According to CHP, the crash happened after a wrong-way driver drove onto the road at a high rate of speed."Through the investigation, we will try to determined where this individual, if they got on the freeway the wrong way, where they got on," CHP Officer, Jake Sanchez said. Hector Puga was on his way to Los Angeles when the car in front of him combusted. He somehow managed to escape the crash and flames. "All I can do is hold onto the steering wheel and run over everything that exploded," Puga said. He escaped with just a flat tire and broken windshield.10News also spoke to a pair of sisters who had just finished up a fun day of shopping at UTC Mall when hopped into their car. Minutes later, they endured a near-death experience. "It was like a scene from a movie," she said. "All the cars were stopping. There was smoke. Fire. Loud noise. As soon as I look up in front of me, that car other there was flying and tumbling down the freeway."They said the driver of the flipped over SUV managed to crawl out of the car.  The survivors carried him to the shoulder, where an ambulance later picked him up. CHP said he endured broken bones, but is expected to recover. All lanes on the interstate were closed for several hours following the crash. Click here for traffic updates. Though it remains unclear if police are investigating the scene as connected to the incident on I-805, Thursday night police investigated a scene at Ashley Falls Elementary School in Carmel Valley. That's where a car rammed a campus gate, according to police. (KGTV) - For 250,000 San Diego County students, school is not just access to education, it is access to food.“We know that for many many of our students, the stable meal they can rely on each day is that breakfast and lunch they can normally get at school,” said SDUSD Trustee Richard Barrera.There are food distribution sites across the county where families can pick up meals for kids while school is not in session. These services will continue through the summer. While thousands are taking advantage of the food distribution sites, not everyone can physically get to the locations, so there is a new state resource to combat that.Pandemic EBT, or P-EBT, is available to students who are eligible for free or reduced price meals at school. Families can apply and get 5 per child on a card that can be used like a debit card at grocery stores or online. The money stays on the card for a year. That number was chosen based on an estimate of how much it would cost to feed a child through the summer.With about a million households applying in the first week, Anahid Brakke with the San Diego Hunger Coalition said there has been a delay with signing up, so anyone interested needs to have patience during the application process. She said it's currently taking about three weeks to process and warned that phone lines are currently backed up, adding that it could take until the end of July to process everyone.“If you apply, if you leave a voicemail, if you send an email, they are making their way through all of that. They’re hiring new staff at the state, they’re extremely committed to making sure everybody who is eligible get their card,” said Brakke.Families need to apply by June 30. If there is more than one child in a family, all of the money will come on one card and the oldest child’s name will be on the card.Barrera mentioned some of the feedback so far has been caution from families who are worried about sharing their information.“Some of our families have called us and said is this some sort of scam? Is somebody trying to get my information? No. Take advantage of this program. It’s meant to support you and your kids,” said Barrera.He said SDUSD is communicating this information through robocalls, so families should not be surprised if they get a voicemail with this information.Leaders also encouraged everyone to apply because families could be eligible if a parent recently lost a job or took a pay cut.According to a release, P-EBT was authorized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 which allows for states to apply to the USDA to run a P-EBT program to meet children’s nutritional needs. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Chesa Boudin, the son of anti-war radicals sent to prison for murder when he was a baby, has won San Francisco's tightly contested race for district attorney after campaigning to reform the criminal justice system.The former deputy public defender declared victory Saturday night after four days of ballot counting determined he was ahead of interim District Attorney Suzy Loftus. The latest results from the San Francisco Department of Elections gave Boudin a lead of 8,465 votes.Loftus conceded and said she will work to ensure a smooth and immediate transition.Boudin, 39, became the latest candidate across the nation to win district attorney elections by pushing for sweeping reform over incarceration. He said he wants to tackle racial bias in the criminal justice system, overhaul the bail system, protect immigrants from deportation and pursue accountability in police misconduct cases."The people of San Francisco have sent a powerful and clear message: It's time for radical change to how we envision justice," Boudin said in a statement. (KGTV) -- Mexican authorities are investigating the discovery of a tunnel near the Otay Mesa border in San Diego, U.S. officials said.Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed the discovery Thursday morning but did not provide any further details.“At this time, U.S. authorities are aware of a tunnel discovered by Mexican law enforcement officials near the Otay Mesa border. However, we have not yet determined whether the tunnel entered into the U.S.," said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman with the DHS.All that is known at this time is that the tunnel is in Mexican territory, south of Otay Mesa which stretches east of 805 and south of the 905 freeways.10News station partner Televisa reports that the tunnel does cross the border.
