On average, women pay about for a cut, while a man pays on average, according to The Beauty Association.Emily Hope Dobkin was tired of paying more for her haircuts than her husband was paying for his. She said the time they spend in the chair was the same. "The price would go up every year, and I was like maybe. I shouldn't be getting my haircut this often because I can't afford it," Dobkin said.It’s not just haircuts that are priced by gender. The Pink Tax has brought to light the extra money women pay for products such as razors, shampoo, clothes, dry cleaning and more."It allows us to see where things are gendered and where they don't need to be," said hair stylist Abrean Sophia Marie.Abrean believes it’s about making everyone feel included. In the heart of Silicon Valley, people are keeping a pulse on a new product, as techies transition to foodiesAt Vina Enoteca, a restaurant located a few blocks from Stanford University, staff serve up new plant-based proteins.“We had a spike on the pizza with Impossible Meat,” says owner Rocco Scordella.Scordella put products created by the company Impossible Foods on his menu a few years ago. The company gave us an all-access inside look at their lab, showing us the science of turning plants into meaty-tasting patties.“The Impossible Burger is made of actually just four really simple categories of ingredients,” Laura Kliman, Impossible Foods senior flavor scientist, says. “We have proteins, our nutrients which generate flavor; we have our binders and we have fat.” They also use the blood red liquid hemoglobin.“Heme is what makes meat taste like meat,” Kliman explains. “It’s an iron containing molecule that is found in every living plant and animal and is essential for life.”This food tech startup was founded by a Stanford University biochemistry professor and a team of scientists back in 2011. After studying meat at the molecular level, they launched Impossible Burger 2.0 in 2014 and the sales have skyrocketed“Since then, we have grown from about 5,000 restaurants in January 2019 to now more than 9,000 restaurants that are serving the Impossible Burger,” Rachel Konrad, Impossible Foods chief communications officer.Those restaurants include some of the biggest fast food franchises in the world.“Just in the past six weeks, you’ve seen Burger King and Little Caesars jump on this trend,” Konrad says. “They’re both rolling out the Impossible Burger and the Impossible Sausage."Impossible Foods hopes to increase that demand by launching in grocery stores later this year.With a starting price point on par with grassfed beef and going down from there.“If we want to make a product that is affordable for many, we need to be using ingredients that are really part of the food chain now,” says David Lipman, Impossible Foods chief science officer.Lipman claims his team’s plant-based foods are better for your health and the environment.“Animal-based agriculture has been possibly the most damaging thing we are doing to the planet,” he says. “We can get the ingredients we need just from the earth at a 20th the amount of space and land, much lower water usage. So, we want to cut out that middle man and make the use of animals and agriculture no longer needed.”Cattle rancher Joe Morris, however, disagrees with those claims. “First of all, they haven’t been around really to understand if that’s true or not,” he says. “Whereas actually beef has been around since people have been people.”Morris’ family’s business T.O. Cattle Company is one of California’s oldest beef companies, dating back to the Gold Rush era. He believes in tradition over technology.“The people that are doing plant-based proteins are doing it with good intentions,” he says. “But there’s a failure to understand the ecology of just ecology and they really don’t know much about agriculture.”Instead, Morris says whatever damage caused by animal agriculture has to be healed by holistic animal agriculture.“The animals are incredible creatures and they do amazing work," he says. "And the results of their work is biodiversity beauty water in the ground. In states where it is legal, dispensaries are the go-to location for marijuana products. But now, more customers are using a marijuana home delivery service. Marijuana delivery is a growing business in California, with a company called Eaze dominating the marketplace. Its web page connects customers to dispensaries. "There's little things like alerts that the driver has been sitting still or idle for 15 minutes, the dispatcher can instruct the retailer and will get an alert so they can call the driver,” Shiravi says. Delivery drivers must have clean driving records. They also have a host of safety procedures to follow. "The cars are not branded. The drivers don't wear cannabis clothing,” says Elissa Hambrecht, CEO of Fume, a dispensary. “There's nothing that says Eaze.com on it. It's literally a soccer mom car." There is some controversy in California and other states that are considering marijuana delivery. Some worry this will make increase crime. "We've seen shootings; we've seen homicides,” says Sgt. Scott Pendleton with the Colorado Police Department in Aurora. “A great deal of violent crime that surrounds marijuana." Sgt. Pendleton, who is a narcotics officer, worries about customers and drivers being sitting ducks for robbers. States that have a marijuana home delivery service include California, New York, Florida, Maine and Oregon. Other states are considering allowing the service, including Colorado and Washington. "You don't know what's going to take place, where there is going to be a rip off that's set up,” Sg. Pendleton says. It's hard to measure whether marijuana delivery has impacted crime where delivery is legal. However, Shiravi believes it’s helped cut down on black market sales. "Delivery helps eliminate the black market, because you are providing a legal channel for access," Shiravi says. Jared Lorenzen has died at the age of 38, family members confirmed to Matt Jones of Hey Kentucky!Lorenzen was the quarterback of the University of Kentucky football team and was signed by the New York Giants in 2004. He had openly struggled with his weight and had returned to Lexington to team up with the "Now Let's Get Fit" organization to help kids make healthy lifestyle choices.“I just want people to know there is something better out there that will make you feel better about yourself and going out and being out,” said Lorenzen.He was Mr. Kentucky Football 1998. He went to Fort Thomas Highlands High School where he also played basketball and baseball. As a junior, he passed for a Northern Kentucky-record 2,759 yards and 37 touchdowns in 13 games. He won state championship titles in 1996 and 1998 and also went to the Sweet 16 tournament with the boys' basketball team. He would often joke about his weight, but was making strides to get healthier.“I came out of the womb big as can be. I was a 13 pound baby,” said Lorenzen.In a 2017 interview with the Today Show, Lorenzen told anchors that he wanted to live long enough to see his daughter get married and his son play college football. It’s been more than four months since Elana Mugdan used her smartphone. Mugdan was the winner of Vitamin Water’s contest that asked participants to go smartphone free for a year for 0,000. When she found out she was selected, Mugdan was thrilled, stating, “I would love to get rid of my phone for a year and reclaim my life.”While most of us wouldn’t ditch the smartphone for an entire year, Mugdan was up for the challenge. She wasn’t completely tech-free, though. Mugdan was allowed to use a computer and a 10-year-old flip phone in case of an emergency. She says the hardest part has been navigating her way around new areas. Mugdan is an author, and she’s currently on a book tour.Her solution? “I go on Google Maps [and] print out directions,” she says.Despite some frustration, going without a phone has given her clarity and she encourages others to cut back.Mugdan recommends first limiting your screen time. Don’t check it first thing in the morning, and do not look at right before you go to bed. Even if you cut back an hour a two a day, Mugdan says, you will see and feel a difference. 1112
