SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For over a decade, SDSU associate professor of chemistry Gregory Holland has been researching spiders and particularly black widow’s silk.They’ve come to the realization, through their research, that the properties of black widow silk are stronger than steel and tougher than the Kevlar in bulletproof vests.Gregory Holland, SDSU associate professor of analytical chemistry and Northwestern chemistry professor Nathan Gianneschi said their collaboration shows the organization of the molecules involved in silk production is more complex than previously thought.There are companies that use synthetic spider silk but its the specific black widow spider silk that has the top tier benefits.“The synthetic spider silk its not a bad material, its just not as good as the real thing," Holland said.Holland says the company that creates synthetic silk actually has partnerships with Adidas and Patagonia. "The most important thing is a spider does it low energy, environmentally friendly. It’s just protein water and salt”.Once they reach the point where they’re able to identically replicate the silk of a black widow spider, the artificial version could be used in building materials for bridges or environmentally friendly replacements for plastic.Black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) spin a lightweight thread much stronger than that of other spider species, with draglines that can stretch an extra 25 percent of their length before snapping.The composition of the spun silk fibers was previously identified, but the structure of the proteins involved in producing them has been more of a mystery, now one step closer. 1650

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration workers in San Diego are just some of the local federal workers impacted by the government shutdown.Of the more than 3,000 TSA employees between San Diego and San Luis Obispo represented by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1260, about 600 employees work in San Diego, the union told 10News.The impact of the shutdown has been "immense" on many employees, AFGE says.RELATED: Government shutdown delays investigation into man's death at Yosemite National Park"The impact has obviously been immense, especially considering it began during the holiday season and into the new year when many employees had already purchased gifts for their families, incurred debts, and still had to worry about upcoming bills," AFGE Vice President Bobby Orozco Jr. says.Orozco pointed to the fact many federal employees live paycheck-to-paycheck as a cause for concern, noting that TSA frontline employees make an average of ,000 annually. Daily expenses like buying gas, lunch, and affording child care are some of the immediate impacts employees are facing.10News spoke to several TSA workers at San Diego International Airport off-camera, who said they, too, feel the pinch. One man said he was one of the fortunate people who have family support in case of an emergency. But his co-workers are not so lucky. Another employee told 10News that he is struggling as he enters his third week without a paycheck. Unable to pay his bills, he is charging everything onto new credit cards. "This shutdown, as all others prior, forces employees to use credit cards and other emergency funds, if applicable, in order to make ends meet until a resolution is met," Orozco said. A few people said they had not noticed a drastic difference, but come next week, it may be a different story.While wait times could be affected by an increase in call outs, TSA spokesman Michael Bilello told CNN they don't expect a lapse in security or wait times."Call-outs began over the Holiday period and have increased, but are causing minimal impact given there are 51,739 employees supporting the screening process," Bilello told CNN. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite the early morning wake-up call, San Diegans still got out to catch NASA's first interplanetary rocket launch from the West Coast.San Diegans unfazed by the 4 a.m. start time broke out their cameras and looked up to the sky to catch the Atlas 5 rocket take off from Vandenberg Air Force Base just north.Some users took to Instagram, others to our 10News Weather Watchers Facebook page. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a heated battle over new regulations for short-term vacation rentals Wednesday, the San Diego City Council approved new regulations in a 6-2 vote.The new rules will go into effect July 2019.The rules, which were based on a plan by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, adopt the city’s first license-based system to manage the rentals, charge cost-recoverable fees to administer licenses and enforce code violations, establish a “Good Neighbor” policy to preserve neighborhood quality of life, hire additional staff to respond to complaints about nuisance properties, and implement a per-night fee that would generate funding for affordable housing projects.RELATED: San Diego City Council approves new rules on short-term rentalsAlthough the plan initially called for homeowners to be allowed two licenses for a primary and secondary home, the council later amended the provision before the plan passed its first vote in July.Faulconer’s proposal was changed to allow a host to be issued a license for a primary residence and a dwelling on the same land as the primary residence.Faulconer also had a provision in his plan allowing no limitations on the number of licenses available to hosts within Mission Beach when it was introduced in June. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends are grieving the loss of a young man killed in a South Bay crash that also sent five teenagers to the hospital. "This is like a bad dream and I want to wake up," said Ivan Nares.Nares says he got a heart-stopping call from his brother Gustavo, 18, from the emergency room Wednesday morning."He said, 'Ivan, Ivan, I need you. His brother was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 packed with teens after a night at an indoor trampoline park.The CHP says around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, the car was headed south on State Route 905 going at a high rate of speed when it hit the center divide near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp. The 21-year-old driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene.Three males and two females, ranging from 15- to 19-years-old, were rushed to hospitals. Among them was Nares' brother, who suffered a fractured pelvis and two broken legs. He is uninsured. Gustavo is an amateur boxer and a recent graduate of San Ysidro High. He was in the process of applying to college. Instead, he faces a tough road to recovery."The advice give to all the people, especially young people is don't drive like you are in a 'Fast and Furious' movie. Be cautious. You're not just playing with your life. You're messing with other people's lives," Nares said.Nares has yet to tell his brother that his friend died in the crash. He's waiting for the right time.
