The average Thanksgiving feast for a family of 10 is expected to cost less in 2020 despite a surge in meat prices. The America Farm Bureau Foundation says that the average feast for 10 will cost .90, which is .01 less than in 2019.While other types of meat are more expensive this year, according to USDA data, turkey prices have dropped. A 16-pound turkey is expected to cost .39, which is down 7% from a year ago. Conversely, meat prices in general have jumped more than 6% from October 2019 through October 2020.“The average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner is the lowest since 2010,” said AFBF Chief Economist Dr. John Newton. “Pricing whole turkeys as ‘loss leaders’ to entice shoppers and move product is a strategy we’re seeing retailers use that’s increasingly common the closer we get to the holiday.”Whipped cream and sweet potatoes have also seen a modest decrease in cost over the last year. The data was compiled from 230 pricing surveys spread across all 50 states. 1001
Survivors of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting are opening old wounds to seek justice as the trial of the gunman's widow opens in Orlando.Jury selection begins Thursday in the federal trial of Noor Salman, who is charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and obstruction of justice for allegedly misleading law enforcement agents investigating the massacre on June 12, 2016.Salman has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. If convicted, she could face life in prison.Prosecutors believe Salman was aware of her husband's plans and will argue that she could have tipped off authorities to prevent the mass shooting at the gay nightclub, which left 49 people dead and more than 50 others wounded.Salman's attorneys will claim that their client had no prior knowledge about Omar Mateen's plans and that she was a wife enduring her husband's abuse. One of her attorneys has said that Salman suffers post-traumatic stress disorder due to years of physical and mental abuse, CNN affiliate WKMG reported. Selecting a fair jury 1067

Texas Democrat Beto O'Rourke is trailing in the polls in his race to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, but his effort is raising an unprecedented amount of money.O'Rourke's Senate campaign announced Friday a record-smashing third quarter fundraising haul of .1 million. It's the most ever raised in a quarter by a US Senate campaign.O'Rourke's campaign has obliterated fundraising records throughout the race, even as polls have consistently shown Cruz with a comfortable lead in the high-profile Senate contest. Last quarter, O'Rourke made headlines with what was then a record-breaking haul of .4 million.Cruz's campaign had an impressive third quarter itself, raising in million between July and the end of September. Neither campaign has yet announced their cash-on-hand total at the end of the third quarter, though O'Rourke led Cruz by over million at the end of the second quarter. The O'Rourke campaign, which has rejected PAC money, announced that the .1 million haul was "powered by 802,836 individual contributions," and said that the "majority of the fundraising c[ame] from Texas.""The people of Texas in all 254 counties are proving that when we reject PACs and come together not as Republicans or Democrats but as Texans and Americans, there's no stopping us," O'Rourke said in a statement. "This is a historic campaign of people: all people, all the time, everywhere, every single day -- that's how we're going to win this election and do something incredible for Texas and our country at this critical moment."Even as O'Rourke has enjoyed a fundraising bonanza driven by a series of viral campaign moments and the national media spotlight, the fundamentals of the race continue to favor Cruz. CNN rates the race as lean Republican. No Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994, and a Quinnipiac University poll released this week found Cruz leading O'Rourke by 9 points, 54% to 45%. 1952
The Arab-American community is on high alert because of a hateful flier that is circulating. The flier promotes April 3 as "Punish a Muslim Day" and encourages violence against Muslims with an escalating point system the more outrageous the act.The fliers originated in London. They were left on the steps of several mosques there. The message is now being spread to the U.S. by way of social media and raising concerns.“We're encouraging the community to be vigilant and to have open lines of communication with local law enforcement. And, if you feel you’re in danger, call law enforcement immediately,” says American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Legal and Policy Director Abed Ayoub. “ This is outrageous, this can not be happening in 2018. This is a clear sign of xenophobia, Islamophobia, and the unfortunate direction some individuals, not only in the UK, but in the United States are heading.”Ayoub says the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee stands ready to help those in the community who may be harmed through any hateful acts. 1068
