BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country's top aircraft manufacturer, said Sunday total sales revenue in its auto business would reach 30 billion yuan (about 4.39 billion U.S. dollars) by 2017. Geng Ruguang, deputy general manager of AVIC, said making big passenger vehicles has become the the corporations's guiding plan for development in its auto business. Geng revealed the figure at a ceremony marking AVIC and its partner Volvol's new product Silver 900 series going into production line. The series is a new type of big and luxurious passenger vehicles, 12 meters long, which could be used for road transportation, tourist reception, and military equipment. The Silver 900 series was developed by Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation, a joint venture established in 1994 by AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co. ltd, and the Swedish bus and truck maker Volvo company. The Xi'an Silver Bus Corporation expects to produce annually 4,000 vehicles by 2014. GUANGZHOU, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Continuous severe drought over the past months has stunted rice crop, threatened reserviors and left hundreds of thousands of people short of drinking water in southern Chinese provinces. In the southern Guangdong Province, where the precipitation in the first 10 months this year has reported a 14 percent drop compared with the average level of the past years, more than 55,000 hectares of cropland are affected and 50,000 people are facing difficulties in getting drinking water because of the drought. Water level in Guangdong's reservoirs continued to drop. According to Guangdong Provincial Flooding and Drought Relief Headquarters, the water conservancy in Guangdong's 32 key reservoirs has reported a year-on-year decrease of 2.34 billion cubic meters. The drought is continuing to take a toll on agricultural production in the province. "I have never seen such a severe drought in my life," said a 73-year-old farmer in Zhoutian Township, Shaoguan City. "A great deal of crops have been damaged." There have also been concerns of further crop damage as drought harms crop's ability to weather the winter. In Nan'ao Island in Shantou City, home to more than 70,000 people, drought has brought inconveniences to local residents' daily bath and laundry. The drought has left more than 70,000 people in Zhangzhou City in the southeastern Fujian Province short of drinking water. Local hydraulic experts attribute the water shortage to the lingering drought as well as the water conservancy facilities' construction which lagged far behind the industrialization and urbanization. In the central Hunan Province, low water level in Dongting Lake, China's second largest fresh water lake, has forced local fishermen into idle. "October used to be a 'golden season' for fishing in the lake," said Gong Jianmin, a local fisherman. "But now we cannot go out to fish since the low water period has come early this year because of the drought." In the eastern Jiangxi Province, the average precipitation since Sep.1 has seen a year-on-year 66-percent drop. Most cities and counties in Jiangxi have reported drought.

URUMQI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A key expressway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region began construction on Wednesday in a move to improve the region's road network and serve its economic development. The 135-km expressway will link Kuytun City to Karamay City. The project, funded by the central government and Xinjiang regional government, will cost 3.87 billion yuan (about 567 million U.S. dollars). The road is bidirectional with four lanes. It will be completed and put into use in November 2011. Dai Gongxing, vice chairman of the Xinjiang regional government, said at the groundbreaking ceremony in Kuytun that the expressway, also part of the national expressway network, would improve the regional transport and promote local economic development.
COPENHAGEN, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The impressive celebrations on Oct. 1 has testified that China is now a very important country in the world and holds a strong position globally, a European expert on China said. The celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China "were very impressive," Kjeld Erik Broedsgaard, professor and director of the Asia Research Center in Copenhagen Business School, told Xinhua in a recent interview. "I think China now is in a stronger position globally than it was in any times since 1949. The celebrations really testify that this is the case," said Broedsgaard, who has been closely following the development of China for more than 30 years. China's economic, political and cultural influence has been on the rise in recent years, said Broedsgaard, who has written and edited 18 books and monographs on modern China and East Asian affairs. Describing China as being at the "forefront in terms of economic development," the Danish professor said China's role is "critical" in tackling the global financial crisis. On China's political influence, he said China has taken part in "a variety of multilateral for a" in addition to international organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. The Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 also showed China's increasing significance, he observed. Culturally, "China is also in a position where soft power is increasing," said Broedsgaard, who is a member of the Advisory Committee of the EU-China Academic Network and the Sino-Danish Joint Committee for Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation. Many people are interested in the Chinese tradition and culture, while more and more people are studying the Chinese language, he said, taking South Korea as an instance. There are more people in South Korea studying Chinese than English, he explained. Confucius institutes have been established in many countries, he said, adding that there is a Confucius Business Institute in Copenhagen. As for the problems that China faces, Broedsgaard said that "there are always problems when a country rises." But he said it is useful to remember history and put things in a historical perspective, adding that it is very important to remember that this is the "re-emergence" of China, which was a strong and important country in the past. To ease the concerns of other countries, China has to relate to its partners and major powers and reassure them that it is a win-win situation in which "I get stronger, but you also get benefit," he said. Broedsgaard also commented on the party building of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was a focus of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee held in Beijing from Sept. 15 to Sept. 18. "The whole issue of party building is important because the quality of leadership is important," he said, adding that the failure of the Soviet Union in the 1990s was part of "a question of the quality of leadership." The CPC has been able to reform, renew and revitalize itself, he said.
HONG KONG, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Bank of China (Hong Kong) said Thursday its half-year profit fell by 5.6 percent from a year earlier, dragged lower by falling interest income amid the deepening economic downturn. The bank's net profit for the six months ending June 30 amounted to 6.69 billion Hong Kong dollars, down from 7.09 billion Hong Kong dollars in the same period last year. However, the bank said it represented a major improvement against the net loss of 3.75 billion Hong Kong dollars in the second half of 2008, which can be attributed to the increase in operating income as well as the decrease in impairment charges on securities investments. Net interest income decreased by 11 percent to 8.93 billion Hong Kong dollars as net interest margin narrowed by 27 basis points to 1.76 percent. But the net fees and commission income grew by 1.7 percent year-on-year to 2.95 billion Hong Kong dollars driven by the rebound of the local stock market in the first half of this year. The bank's vice chairman and chief executive He Guangbei said the performance in the first half of this year reflected the progress the bank had made in regaining its growth momentum. As the turbulence and its knocks-on effects began to subside, the bank would pursue a prudent yet flexible development strategy in an environment of change and challenge. He also said BOC (HK) would actively expand the RMB-related banking business as the sole Clearing Bank for Renminbi business in Hong Kong.
