A ground search team in the Indian Himalayas has spotted five bodies on the unnamed peak where eight climbers are believed to have gone missing a week ago.Pithoragarh District Magistrate Vijay Kumar Jogdande told CNN Monday that the bodies appear to be partially buried in an avalanche on the peak in different locations. The bodies were identified following analysis of photographs taken by a helicopter that conducted an air survey of the area earlier in the day.By Monday afternoon local time, the search operation had stopped for the day, Jogdande said. Now, authorities are formulating a plan to recover the bodies. On Sunday, helicopter teams saw signs of an avalanche on the peak the group were thought to be on, according to two state officials. On Monday a lone chopper went to recce the area and its crew discovered the backpack at an elevation of about 5,000 meters.Jogdande said it was likely the missing team had been caught up in a "huge avalanche.""The chances of survival are almost zero now," he said. The missing climbers -- four Britons, two Americans, an Australian and their Indian liaison officer -- went missing in the region of Nanda Devi East, one of the highest peaks in India at just over 7,400 meters (24,000 feet.)The group was attempting to scale a previously unclimbed and unnamed peak believed to be about 6,477 meters (21,250 feet) high, according to 1393

A California rapid transit employee is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a man who fell onto the tracks as a train was approaching the platform. The dramatic rescue happened at the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station at the Oakland Coliseum after an NFL game Sunday between the Oakland Raiders and the Detroit Lions.Tony Badilla, a passenger who witnessed the episode, posted a video on Twitter of the two men hugging in the aftermath. He told CNN the employee, identified as John O'Connor, was very attentive in keeping the crowd back from the tracks while helping riders find their train line."As the train approached, I sat up from my seat and the crowd turned their attention to the train," he said. "I heard a commotion to my left just as the train arrived and witnessed the BART worker physically bring the man to the ground, both falling to the deck safely as the train breezed by."The crowd was shocked at just how close of a call it was, and the man was rattled," Badilla said. "The BART worker was upset with the man for being so careless, but his emotions took over and the two embraced."According to a statement from BART, the unidentified man was intoxicated and accidentally fell onto the tracks. In a tweet, BART thanked O'Connor for his heroism. "He saved a life tonight. Thank you John. Show him some love," the tweet read.O'Connor, a former train operator promoted to transportation supervisor, has worked at BART for 24 years, according to the transit agency."John was on the platform and ensuring everyone stayed away from the yellow safety strip," a BART spokeswoman told CNN in a statement. "A male who was intoxicated accidentally mis-stepped and fell into the trackway while a train was approaching. John saw this along with other riders and yelled at the man to get back onto the platform. The male didn't move quick enough so John grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him up by rolling him over his body to safety. They stood up and hugged."O'Connor told 1998

You could be one of the millions of Americans who have had your driver's license photo scanned without your knowledge or consent. A new report reveals both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are using facial recognition technology to scan driver's license photos as part of investigations. In addition to privacy concerns, critics point out facial recognition technology is both unregulated and can be inaccurate. “An innocent individual could become the target of a law enforcement investigation, simply because you have a glitchy computer system,” Jake Laperruque, with Project on Government Oversight, says.Laperruque is a privacy advocate for the watchdog organization. “I would bet most people in states don't want their photos being churned through an FBI database to search for random investigative targets,” he says. New research from Georgetown Law revealed the first known instance of ICE agents analyzing driver's license photos without any consent, which could put more pressure on Congress to act. Both Democrats and Republicans have expressed concerns about the technology at congressional hearings this session. “More than half of American adults are part of facial recognition databases and they might not even know it,” expressed Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland). “It doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you're on, this should concern us all,” said Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). As Congress weighs legislation to regulate facial recognition, some cities have started to ban law enforcement and public agencies from using the software. 1621
