Days after a dad was caught on camera being shot as he shielded his children from gunfire at Bronx car dealership, a family friend says he has lost his job.An innocent bystander, 39-year-old Anthony Jefferson was struck in the right thigh when the shooting erupted Monday, officials said.On a GoFundMe campaign page started Thursday by close friend Serena Wingate, she wrote that Jefferson had lost his job due to the injury and also has to have surgery to remove the bullet.Jefferson's wife, Danica Jefferson, told TMZ that the injury left him temporarily unable to walk. This has resulted in the heroic dad being fired from both of his two jobs as a construction worker and head painter at a maintenance company, TMZ reported.Wingate said she set up the GoFundMe to help the dad with medical bills and help his kids with therapy after the traumatic experience.According the family friend, the father and his three kids were at the dealership shopping for a new vehicle to surprise his wife for her birthday.That's when shots rang out inside the Boston Road business. MONTPELIER, Vt. – Among the maple trees in west Vermont, on the outskirts of Montpelier, sits Morse Farm and Sugar Works. Elliott Morse and his brother Burr Morse run the farm. Their families have been farmers in the region for seven generations. “We were dairy farmers for most of those generations,” said Burr. “My father didn’t like dairy farming, that just wasn’t what you wanted to do.” Under Harry Morse senior, Burr’s father, the farm focused on tapping maple. When it was Burr’s turn to run things, he thought the land was suited to do something else too. The farm had enough land and the right topography for cross country skiing. “This was a junction here and really the main entrance to the ski system,” Burr explained as he walked the farm’s ski trails. “Skiing livened the place up in the winter.” Cross-country skiing on Morse Farm became a popular local attraction in Montpelier for more than two decades. “Families had fun and year after year they’d come up to ski,” Burr added. However, Morse Farm had to close its ski trails last year as the weather has become more unpredictable, and the snowfall amounts have been inconsistent. Over the past decade, Vermont has had almost 200 inches of snow one year, and barely 50 inches the next. “It’s not easy, it’s not easy at all. Skiing was with us for 20 years and now it’s like it died,” said Burr. The change has been tough for Burr Morse to accept, but necessary. Now he can focus all his attention to maple sugaring in hopes of minimizing the unpredictable weather’s effect on that business. “There are a lot of sugar maker walking around like, there’s not a problem. Nothing’s wrong, nothing’s wrong. I don’t have the patience for that,” he said. “I am a realist. I have my eyes open on the farm and darn it all I am concerned.” He’s concerned over how long technology, like vacuum pumps hooked onto maple trees, will work to draw sap from the trees when the weather is unseasonable. But he’s also concerned over how many more generations of the Morse family will be able to enjoy running the family farm. “I have just one grandchild 6-year-old girl and we love her to pieces and if she wants to carry on this place someday that would be great,” Burr said. “But will the place be here for her if she makes that choice I don't know and that's what I worry about.” 2347

It's the kind of situation nobody wants to be in: getting sick unexpectedly and left with a hefty hospital bill to pay. But it's a situation Jamesia Shutt is all too familiar with. Three years ago, Shutt got sick and went to the emergency room in the middle of the night. "They did some X-rays, some morphine, gave me an antibiotic and sent me home in like two hours maybe,” Shutt recalls of the visit. “You have pneumonia, go home." That two-hour visit to the ER turned out be quite expensive. "A couple weeks later, I don't know when, I get a bill for ,000," she says. It’s a sticker shock she didn't see coming. "My thought is well, I'm not a doctor or a medical person, so I’m trusting this cost, whatever they say it's going to cost," she says. It’s a problem that David Silverstein, the founder of the non-profit group Broken Healthcare, sees it all the time. "Imagine if you and I went to a restaurant and we sat down at the same table at the same time with the same waiter and we're given the same menu with different prices on it, how would that make you feel? Well, this happens in healthcare every day," Silverstein says. Silverstein has been fighting to make sure patients aren't hit with what are called “surprise bills.” "The number one thing is ask a lot of questions and don't get frustrated by the answers,” he says. “As a consumer, you have rights. If they say they don't know, say that's not good enough." Silverstein says ask questions to find out if anyone doing the procedure is out of your insurance network. This year, the White House started requiring hospitals to list prices online. The issue with that is those prices are listed without factoring in insurance, which complicates things even more. "It does not help 99 percent of the population, but it's a step in the right direction,” Silverstein says. “We need transparency from both the providers and the insurance carriers.” When the president held this meeting last month, both Silverstein and Shutt were by his side, because they know the problem firsthand. "To have the president ask what happened and why do you have this medical bill was pretty incredible," Shutt says. Three years later, Broken Healthcare's attorneys are fighting Shutt’s hospital bill. "It is a game and Americans need to learn the rules of the game, and they need to learn their rights and play the game to win until such time our government officials do the right thing and change the rules, so we don't have to play this sleazy game anymore," Silverstein says. 2540
