Residents in Freeport, Grand Bahamas woke up to severely flooded neighborhoods on Tuesday following the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian. United Nations officials estimate more than 60,000 people in the northwest Bahamas will need food following the catastrophic natural disaster. Tim Aylen, a Bahamian journalist assisting The Associated Press with the hurricane coverage, had to abandon his home with his family due to the flooding. Speaking about some of his work, Aylen said he had no idea he would be shooting pictures of himself and his family evacuating their home as part of his coverage. Early Tuesday, Aylen could be seen wadding through chest-level flood waters as he made his way through the streets of Arden Forest in Freeport.His 21-year-old daughter Julia Aylen, and 17-year-old son Matthew Aylen, along with their three dogs were seeking higher ground Tuesday morning, with images showing their exhaustion from the ordeal. A spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said Tuesday about 45% of homes in Grand Bahama and Abaco were severely damaged or destroyed.The organization was aiming help 20,000 of the most vulnerable people, including a large Haitian community, the spokesman said. 1260

Subtropical Storm Andrea formed in the Atlantic basin Monday afternoon, marking the first named tropical system of the 2019 hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center announced. As of 6:30 p.m. ET, Andrea had top winds of 40 MPH and was located 335 miles southwest of Bermuda. The National Hurricane Center said that an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter plane confirmed winds near 40 MPH. The forecast calls for Andrea to possibly strengthen overnight before weakening as it drifts toward Bermuda. It is not currently a threat to the United States coast. 573

Rockland County, a suburb of New York City, is taking a big step when it comes to vaccination. Effective Wednesday, any unvaccinated child is banned from public places. Their parents could even face jail time. "Anyone who is under 18 years of age and is unvaccinated against the measles will be barred from public places until the declaration expires in 30 days,” announced Ed Day, a Rockland County executive. A state of emergency was declared in the county, following what officials say is the worst measles outbreak there in decades. As of this week, there have been 153 confirmed cases. "We have now the worst outbreak in the nation,” said Day. “The time has come to do something." Minors, excluding those with medical exemptions, are now barred from schools, churches and stores. Although police won't be patrolling vaccination records, leaders say parents could face jail time and fines. "If you have threats of being arrested and put in jail for 6 months because you choose not to inject your child with a pharmaceutical product, that’s the definition of fascism," argues Philip Silberman, an anti-vaxxer. The health choice advocate says this move is all part of a political agenda. "The agenda is to always just kind of eat away at our freedoms little by little by little," Silberman says. Martin provided the update to his fans in a blog post Tuesday, saying that he’s spending the time at his Santa Fe home writing the next book in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series. “Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day,” he wrote. “Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms… but maybe not as grim as they may become here.” As a 71-year-old man, Martin is in high risk age group for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. However, he says he’s taking the necessary precautions. “For those of you who may be concerned for me personally… yes, I am aware that I am very much in the most vulnerable population, given my age and physical condition,” he wrote. “But I feel fine at the moment, and we are taking all sensible precautions.
