SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Derek Swenningsen isn't the typical for trainer for puppies who go to become service animals but right now, volunteers like him are all Tender Loving Canines had. "We're making arrangements and trying to recruit new volunteers to take those puppies until volunteer programs inside prisons can pick back up again," said Victoria Cavaliere with TLC. TLC's 8-week-old puppies started out in prisons where inmates train them before they went to helping those in need. "We teach incarcerated individuals who are in the program how to train dogs to become service dogs using only positive reinforcement."But since COVID-19, they had to switch gears. "We’re looking for someone who is just passionate about the mission and has the time to open up their homes to having a puppy in their home," allowing those like Swenningsen to take their place as trainers."I feel obligated to do my best and make sure Fiji gets the best he can to make it through the program and help a fellow veteran out."Veterans and those who have disabilities or other medical conditions relied on service animals, putting TLC's dogs in demand, even amid a pandemic."To take a dog from a little puppy and mold it into what you want it to be which is this amazing superhero for someone with a disability and help give them independence and get them out of their homes and be part of the world."TLC partnered with Guide Dogs of America and has been in service for 20 years. Cavaliere said their program helped those with disabilities and medical conditions, and inmates as well."Individuals training these dogs are learning about the science of behavior and its helping them with their rehabilitation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Family Fun Center has returned to its roots in Kearny Mesa, reopening the Clairemont Mesa Blvd. location on Saturday.Following the closure of Boomers! last June after parent company Apex Parks Group filed for bankruptcy, the Huish family — who own the land — has revived the site under its original name.Shane Huish says his father built the original park at the site in 1974 and operated it for about 20 years before it was sold to Boomers! in the 1990s."With that happening, our family was excited to get them back. However, when we went back to the parks in June, we were floored," said Shane Huish.Huish says the former Boomers! was in need of several improvements and upgrades.Among those needed improvements, miniature golf, bumper boats, and an arcade all in need of a facelift.Saturday, the park reopened Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with mini-golf on its Storybook and Westernland courses and go-karting, featuring updated karts and track. Also returning, Bullwinkle’s Restaurant.Huish says the park's bumper boats will need to wait for state guidance since they are considered an amusement park attraction."We have been fixing up the miniature golf courses and that will continue ... we have completely gutted the arcade building and remodeled it," Huish said, adding that the arcade will also have to await state guidance to reopen.Huish says the future of the former El Cajon Boomers!, which is also owned by the family, depends on how the business landscape looks in the next four to six months due to the pandemic.For now, a dose of family fun in the outdoors has returned to the property."Our family is super excited to be back in San Diego, we all grew up there," Huish said.For hours and more information, head to Family Fun Centers' website here. 1794

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of veterans who bravely served our country reunited this week in San Diego.It was the first Midway Class Reunion, also known as the Three Sisters Reunion.Veterans who served on the USS Midway, USS Coral Sea, and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt were invited to attend. In addition to touring the ship veterans were able to look at commemorative books from their deployments. “They get to meet others, they get to swap sea stories as we say in the Navy, get to swap sea stories with their friends and anyone willing to listen!” said a USS Midway Museum volunteer. Organizers say they hope to do another reunion in the future. 654

Or if you've chosen to support the Chargers, StubHub Center?A newly published analysis by ESPN's Outside the Lines investigated thousands of food-safety inspection reports from health departments that monitor professional sports venues across the U.S.The analysis looks at routine inspection reports from 2016 to 2017.According to ESPN, about 28 percent of the venues registered high-level violation in half or more of their food service outlets. The violations cover temperature, pests or bugs, poor condition of food, equipment failures, employee-related issues, and more.The study's worst is in Charlotte, N.C., where Spectrum Center — home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets — posted a 92 percent violation rate, followed by Michigan's now-closed Palace of Auburn Hills (86.11 percent), and Texas' American Airlines Center (83.08 percent.)The highest rated stadium was Oakland's Oracle Arena — home of the NBA's Golden State Warriors— with a 1.12 percent violation rate.Petco ParkSan Diego's downtown ballpark ranked fifth among MLB venues and 24th among all venues analyzed by ESPN.Of the park's 168 outlets inspected, 28 recorded high-level violations, according to ESPN's study. The study found the park registered on average 0.09 high-level violations per inspections.Some of those violations, for example, including pest-related issues— two of which occurred in 2016 inspections. On Aug. 18, 2016, an inspector found bird droppings on top of an ice bin and on Sept. 20, 2016, rodent droppings were discovered on the floor and top of a concession stand's ice machine. That ice machine was taken out of service for the rest of the season, according to the study.The San Diego Padres told 10News they are "confident that our ballpark will continue to be one of the safest" in baseball:“We strive for excellence with our food and beverage service at Petco Park.
