SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the last week, San Diego Zoo Global has raised more than half-million dollars for Australian wildlife relief.More than 0,000 has been raised through admission sales on Sunday at San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, on-site donations, and online donations, the organization said. That money will go toward wildlife relief in Australia, as its devastating wildfire season scorches millions of acres."We are overwhelmed by the support that this initiative has received from our audiences, and inspired that so many people want to join us in saving Australian wildlife," said Paul Baribault, CEO of San Diego Zoo Global. "We know that there will be years of work to help ensure that species like koalas and platypuses can recover from the wildfires that have swept that country—and we are extremely grateful to all of the people who have joined us in our effort to help."RELATED:Here's how you can help the victims of the Australian wildfiresSan Diego Zoo Global supports koala recovery amid devastating Australia wildfiresNorth County woman crochets pouches for injured Australian animalsHigh heat and severe drought have fueled the wildfires in Australia, which are believed to have killed at least one billion animals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jonathan Goldwasser was one of the first business owners to set up shop inside One Paseo in Del Mar Heights. He opened the Parakeet Cafe when One Paseo’s retail area launched in March 2019 - and followed that up a few months later with Juice Crafters. He says business is of course best when the plaza is full. However, One Paseo has been anything but full since March, when coronavirus restrictions went into effect.“This has been hard,” Goldwasser said. “We went from maybe 20 employees to four.”Things, however, changed this week, when One Paseo fully reopened its retail center. On Thursday, there were people sitting at its socially distant tables and chairs, while shoppers in masks walked down its courtyard.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said, noting he’s back up to about 20 workers.About 25% of the center’s 40-plus businesses are mom-and-pops that rely on foot traffic.Juice Crafters closed entirely and Parakeet Cafe was reduced to takeout and delivery, sales going down 80%. They’ve since recovered and are now off 40% from pre-coronavirus levels.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said. The City Council approved One Paseo, a residential, retail and office complex in 2015. However, a referendum from nearby residents and the mall across the street ensued. Developer Kilroy scaled back the center to its current 0 million version, which opened last year just south of Del Mar Heights Road. Now that it’s open, there are social distancing rules in place. The center has also increased security to ensure the rules are followed and added sanitation protocols. Most of One Paseo’s retailers are now open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 1789

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If the flood of fellow travelers doesn't keep you close to home this Memorial Day weekend, perhaps the price at the pump will.Gasoline prices have climbed 12 cents over the past two weeks to bring the national average to about .93 per gallon before the Memorial Day weekend. It's the highest since Memorial Day 2014 when the average hit .65 a gallon, according to AAA.In California — one of 14 states above a gallon — drivers will have it the worst in the U.S. with an average of .71 a gallon.GAS PRICE MAP: Find the cheapest gasoline near you and around San DiegoSan Diego's local prices mimic the state's trend. A year ago the average for a gallon of gas in the county was about .03, compared to about .73 a gallon today. For the week ending on May 11, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported gas stocks fell by about 200,000 barrels to 29.7 million barrels. However, inventory levels are 600,000 stronger than this time last year. Imports increased by 50,000 barrels to 117,000 barrels last week, EIA reports.RELATED: Memorial Day weekend to see the most travelers in last 12 yearsDespite this, gas prices don't look like they'll put a dent in weekend travel. This year, AAA expects more than 41.5 million travelers to be out for Memorial Day weekend, a five percent jump from last year. Of that, about 36.6 million people will be on the roads. And drivers may need to fill up more often on top of that. Transportation analytics company INRIX predicts travel delays could be up to three times longer than normal in some areas of the country.BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT: Check updated San Diego traffic conditionsAnd as the summer rolls in, gasoline prices may not look back."Compared to an average of the last three Memorial Day weekends, pump prices are nearly 50 cents more expensive and climbing," Jeanette Casselano, an AAA spokesperson, said. "Trends are indicating that this summer is likely to bring the national average to at least /gallon." 2040
