The year 2018 was a tale of two stories: a year of record-breaking holiday sales and a year of retailers filing for bankruptcy. According to the Mastercard Spending Pulse report, brick and mortar stores saw a 5 percent increase in sales compared to last year. There was a 19 percent increase for online sales. However, it was also year big retailers like Sears filed for bankruptcy, and Toys-R-Us closed its stores. “Weak retailers are closing,” says marketing professor Darrin Duber-Smith. “It just takes them forever to close.” What does this mean for retailers as we head into 2019? “If the retailers that are in trouble--the ones that are kind of running out of cash, the ones that really look like they're going out of business--if they don't have a good holiday season, they're pretty much dead in the water in the first couple of quarters,” Duber-Smith explains. Despite an increase in holiday sales overall, department stores struggled. Sales were reportedly down 1.3 percent this holiday season. J.C. Penny’s stock fell below a share for the first time last week. Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue have been shutting down some of their flagship stores, and Nieman Marcus has big debt coming due in 2020 and 2021. Duber-Smith says debt is a make or break. “These brands that are saddled with so much debt aren't able to invest in their companies,” he explains. “They're not able to invest in marketing. They're not able to invest in e-commerce.” E-commerce is key. Online sales growth for department stores grew 10.2 percent, but Amazon is still king when it comes to online retailers. That's why some stores have decided to work with the retail giant. “Best Buy was left for dead,” Duber-Smith explains. “Now, they have a partnership with Amazon where you can try the products in-store and buy it on Amazon. But now, Best Buy get a piece of that action.”Survival for some retailers means finding creative ways to thrive in an ever-changing retail landscape. 1990

The White House communications team is losing a longtime member as Lindsay Walters is set to depart the administration.Walters will leave her post as deputy press secretary in April for a role as vice president of US public affairs at public relations firm Edelman, the White House announced Tuesday alongside a series of glowing on-record statements."There are few talents who also have the savvy, sophistication and street smarts to thrive inside a West Wing as intense as this one. Lindsay Walters is one of them. The President and all of his staff are thankful for her service and we wish her all the best," chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said.Walters joined the administration at its beginning in January 2017. She previously worked on the Republican National Committee's press team as a spokeswoman under then-communications director Sean Spicer. The announcement comes as the White House communications team undergoes a series of changes. Hogan Gidley was recently promoted to principal deputy press secretary with the departure of Raj Shah, who left for the private sector. Two additional deputy press secretaries, Judd Deere and Steven Groves, were added to the team, each with their own assigned areas of focus, a return to its original structure.Press secretary Sarah Sanders will be the only remaining original high-level member of the White House press team after Walters' departure. Sanders and the first lady's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, both began as deputy press secretaries with Walters, but Grisham transitioned to the East Wing early in the administration.Throughout the administration, the communications team has 1661
The small mountain town of Leadville, Colorado has its own one-man welcome wagon. He’s volunteered his own time for four years, greeting those driving through, and how he does it captures everyone’s eye. “My name is Jim Duke, and I am the official town greeter,” he says. He wears a long tail coat, a top hat and sports an impressive gray beard. “I go out and meet people on the street, and welcome them into town,” Duke says. “I let them know they’re family.”Duke says he dresses up as someone would back in the 1800s, to give more character to the town. “Really, my favorite part about doing all of this is to bring a smile to people’s faces,” the greeter says. “I’m not just some nut out here. I love the town. I was the unofficial town greeter, until the mayor named me the official greeter three years ago.”Duke said he does this because he wants people to love the town and see what he sees. “I see beauty, I see the people and I see love in this town,” Duke says. In a world filled with screens, there seems to be a lot of disconnect among each other. Duke believes just smiling and saying hi to one another can help build that bridge between each other that we often forget can exist. He has also gathered a lot of attention in the small town and will be cast in a film titled ‘Royal Flush by 1314
