SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --Jurors found ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II guilty Monday on three counts including rape, lewd conduct, and indecent exposure.Around 4 p.m. Monday, the jury sent another note indicating that they remained deadlocked on the remaining eight counts. But some are beginning to head outdoors, just with many precautions. Just a few days into the Governor's Stay-at-home order, many San Diegans are already getting cabin fever."With our gyms closed, we got to get exercise somehow," Joann Carcioppolo said. With no access to their weights and machines, Carcioppolo and her friend Janice Meyers decided to take a stroll around Pacific Beach. Of course, keeping in mind, Rule #1. "Doing our social distancing!" Meyers laughed. Families also took to the outdoors, hiking and hitting the parks. Instead of having their children clued to their devices, the Marcussen's spent the day at Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad. Mother, Candice, said today, her children's playtime had a little bit of a modification. "We're not letting them play on the playground," Marcussen said. "They brought their own toys down to make sure that we stay healthy and clean."Now that kids do not have school, and parents are working from home, things can get mundane. But many said they are trying to stay positive during this global pandemic. "Were are just trying to be kind grateful for this extra time together that we wouldn't normally have had. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) – It’s one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the country. It's called Cipro and the side effects could lead to your death. Experts are now calling for tighter controls on these prescriptions to protect the public.Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to former Cipro users in San Diego who say they hit rock bottom after taking the medication.“I felt like I was in the pit of hell,” says Annie Spackman from Chula Vista. She describes it as the darkest time of her life. “I didn't know how much more I could handle,” she adds. After taking the antibiotic Cipro, she tells us, “My knees, my ankles [and] my feet [were in] pain. Just shooting pain.”“[I had] burning sensations in my muscles, my joints, my tendons [and] my ligaments,” says Tom Ingoglia, who lives in Pacific Beach. He says his health also spiraled after taking Cipro. “I had pain throughout my body,” he adds.Spackman says she suffered from panic attacks, brain fog and depression. “You feel lonely [and] helpless,” she tells us.She says with faith, she pulled through. Yet, Florence Summers says her daughter, Deana, did not. “She parked her car on the side of the interstate and walked in front of a semi,” she cries.Her family blames Deana's suicide on side effects from Cipro, which she began taking just four months before her death. "It was not her. She would have never, ever, ever done something like that," adds Summers.Cipro is one of the brand names for a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. Another brand name is Levaquin.Since 2015, the FDA has recognized a syndrome related to taking these drugs. It's called fluoroquinolone-associated disability. The FDA added black box warnings to these drugs, citing disabling and potentially irreversible side effects, including suicidal thoughts. However, some experts say that no one is reading that warning, buried in a medication insert.“We have suicides after 1 or 2 days of antibiotics,” says Dr. Charles Bennett. He’s a nationally recognized medication safety expert and says it's a big problem. “The risks outweigh the benefits,” he adds.A review of the FDA’s data shows more than 20,000 reports of psychiatric side effects, like anxiety and depression and 174 suicides connected to these antibiotics since 1998. Doctors in the U.S. wrote 29.7 million prescriptions for these drugs in 2016 alone, according to the CDC.Dr. Bennett has filed a petition with the FDA, asking that doctors who prescribe this medicine get patients to sign a release that they understand the risks before taking the drugs.The FDA told us it is reviewing Dr. Bennett's request for a new warning, adding, "It is important that health care providers and patients are aware of both the risks and benefits of fluoroquinolones."We reached out to Bayer which makes Cipro. The drug maker sent the following statement.“The health and safety of patients who use Bayer products is our top priority, and Bayer expresses its sympathies to the family of [Deana].Cipro? (ciprofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, an important class of medications that treat a wide range of bacterial infections, many of which are serious and can be life-threatening. All medicines have potential side effects and the risks are communicated to physicians and patients in FDA-approved product labeling. The Cipro label contains FDA-approved language advising physicians and their patients about the potential side effects associated with the use of this therapy, including specific warnings about the risks of central nervous system and other psychiatric effects.The safety and efficacy of Bayer’s fluoroquinolones have been demonstrated in clinical trials involving more than 90,000 patients and extensive clinical experience in more than 800 million patients. Cipro was originally approved by the FDA in 1987 and is now widely available as a generic medication that is manufactured and supplied widely throughout the United States by several companies.Bayer closely monitors the safety and efficacy of its fluoroquinolones on an ongoing basis, as we do with all of our products. As with any prescription medication, Bayer encourages patients to discuss the risks and benefits of these medications with their healthcare provider.”The drug maker Janssen is no longer making Levaquin, but the drug is still available in generic form.Spackman adds, “Something more has to be done to let people know the extreme side effects it can have on you.” 4489

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- While most beaches in San Diego County are entirely closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Coronado, Torrey Pines, and Oceanside do not have hard-closures. However, most of the visitors at the still-open beaches were doing their part in maintaining proper social distance. Get out and stretch out. Many people found one of the rare places in San Diego County to do so: Coronado Beach. "All the gyms, and everywhere you can get a little exercise, are closed," Manhattan Beach resident, Ryan Darling said. "I actually came out just to stretch my legs a little bit and get out of the house to do some lunges." Darling is visiting a friend in Coronado. He was worried the beach here would be packed. But many are finding it to be pretty mellow. "It's just as nice to see that it's not crazy on this nice, beautiful Saturday," Coronado resident, Brenda Byrnes said. Coronado Lifeguards periodically make announcements over the loudspeakers to take enforcement to the next level. "We're trying as hard as we can to keep the beach open. So we ask that you guys remain in motion," lifeguards said. If they see anyone loitering, sunbathing, or quietly sitting on the sand, they tell them to get a move on. It's a message most people seem to be following. "I went the whole way, and we just wave hi to one another from six feet and keep going," Darling said. The same goes for Oceanside. The beaches there have similar soft-closure rules. The parking lots, Pier, picnic areas, and playgrounds are closed. Congregating is strictly prohibited. These cities are following State guidelines practiced at Torrey Pines State Beach. Parking lots are closed, so visitors must hike into the beach. But some fortunate folks found street parking. "It's our lucky day!" visitor, John Hughes laughed. "Get out, get some sun, and then we'll go back home and hibernate."So far, visitors at the still-open beaches seem to be taking social distancing seriously. It's because if they do not, they know this luxury may be taken away at any time. "I hope they remain open, and to be used just the way they are right now," Byrnes said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As of today, it is illegal to live in your car in the city of San Diego. This controversial law took effect right after yesterday night's City Council vote. Homeowners in many San Diego neighborhoods said it is about some regulation is enforced. But homeless advocates called it a human rights violation. 10News met with two "van-lifers," as they called themselves. One of them was 39-year-old Jason Thorwegen. He said he is a Southern California native, who has been homeless since childhood."I started being homeless at the age of 8 years old," Thorwegen said. He admitted, it has not been easy, and that he is not perfect. But he never thought he would be in trouble, while trying to stay out of trouble, inside his van. Tuesday night, San Diego City Council approved the updated the Vehicle Habitation Ordinance, after residents complained about health and safety. "People who live in my neighborhood are defecating and urinating on the street, I see it. and I live it," one lady said at the Council meeting Tuesday.RELATED: San Diego City Council passes restrictions on living in vehiclesStarting Wednesday, living in a vehicle is illegal on city streets between 9 pm and 6 am unless parked in a designated Safe Parking Zone. Smith runs the non-profit organization, "Dreams For Change," which provides 60 safe parking spaces throughout the city. The city currently has 120 spaces, with plans to offer more this year. She plans to get the ACLU on her side, to fight that the untimely law, is a human rights violation. "If they are making more parking lots, why don't they make the parking lots first? And then try to make that law?" Ennis asked.Thorwegen said the new lots would not change his lifestyle."I have anxieties that prevent me from living inside," Thorwegen said. He said he has non-combat-related PTSD and other illnesses. That is why started "Van for a Plan."The Go-Fund-me campaign asks people to donate old vans. He then converts them to be provided to clean, homeless veterans. "We want them to do the work, and that way, they can earn the vans," Thrrwegen said. He is working on his second van now. But now with this new ordinance, he is worried his efforts will become mute."What didn't help was when people made it illegal for me to be. You know, illegal for me, to be," Thorwegen said.The city said officers would first have to be trained about the new ordinance before issuing tickets. But Smith anticipated people would likely find other ways to avoid the consequences."So one of the issues we suspect is going to start, is people will start moving right outside the city limits.
