Scrap metal thieves are becoming so brazen, they're now now taking parts off of gas grills at Walmart in the middle of the shopping day, according to Cleveland's Environmental Crimes Task Force.Sgt. Andrew Ezzo said the crooks took nearly 100 pounds in valves and other parts from display gas grills at the Walmart located on Brookpark Road in Cleveland."The only way they found out is because they sold a couple of display models, and people had to bring them back and said, 'Where's our parts?'" said Ezzo. "They think they can take whatever they want. They think they're entitled to it."Ezzo said his task force has reported a series of thefts at major companies in all parts of the city. Two thieves were caught on surveillance video at Menyhart Plumbing on Lorain Road stealing thousands of pounds in antique home heating radiators. Owner Peter Menyhart said the task force used his surveillance video and its relationship with area scrap yards to make an arrest in less than a day."Basically anything those two guys could physically carry, they carried out of here," Menyhart said. "They didn't have any money, so they're like, 'Hey, lets go steal some scrap, and we could go drop it off at 7 a.m. at the scrap yard and get some cash.'"The scrap yard involved reported the stolen items, and police found suspects in just a few hours.Ezzo said his task force is in a battle, but the efforts of his team have reduced the number of thefts so far in 2018."In 2014, 2015 and 2016, the State of Ohio led the nation in scrap theft," Ezzo said. "The deal that we make with the scrap yards is if I find the victim, the victim is going to pay you whatever you paid for it, that way the scrap yard is not out the money."Menyhart said his company will add additional security cameras. He had nothing but praise for Ezzo and his team."He said, 'I'm going to put out a bulletin. I'm going to catch these guys before the day is out.' The Seattle Times reports Southall Environmental Associates scientist John Durban and marine mammal research director for the nonprofit SR3 Holly Fearnbach recently finished recording drone images of the endangered southern residents and discovered pregnancies amid the J, K, and L pods. According to SR3, whale pregnancies typically last 17-18 months.Pregnancies are not unusual but Tahlequah's pregnancy carries special meaning for a region that grieved the death of her calf along with her. The southern residents are struggling to survive, and most pregnancies are not successful.SR3 says the unsuccessful pregnancies are due to lack of food and nutrition and there are only 73 whales in population. 881

Scientists are reporting that the antibodies people make to fight the new coronavirus do not fade quickly. The new study is the most extensive work yet on the immune system’s response to the virus and is good news for efforts to develop vaccines. The report published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. It was based on tests on more than 30,000 people in Iceland. It found antibodies lasted for at least four months after diagnosis. The study also found that more severe cases of the coronavirus led to a stronger immune response to the virus."Among recovered persons, antibody levels are higher in older persons and in those more severely affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection," according to the research. Independent experts say if a vaccine can spur production of long-lasting antibodies like that, it gives hope that immunity may not be fleeting. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a crash that sent a child to the hospital Monday. The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. at Woodland Parkway and Rock Springs Road. "Witnesses observed two 12 year old male Woodland Parkway Middle School students run westbound into a marked crosswalk against a solid red signal light and red crosswalk signal," deputies said.The 38-year-old male driver of a white Nissan could not avoid hitting the first boy, while the second narrowly avoided being struck, according to deputies. SAN MARCOS (KGTV) -- A homicide investigation is underway after one person was killed in a San Marcos crash Friday afternoon.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened around 4:15 p.m. on West San Marcos Boulevard and South Rancho Santa Fe Road.When deputies arrived, they found an unidentified woman in the back seat with trauma to her body. She was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the vehicle was detained.The department’s homicide unit responded and has taken over the investigation, the department said Saturday.The names of the driver and victim haven’t been released at this time and the details surrounding the crash remain unclear. 694
