SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Federal Reserve's decision to lower its key interest rate to near zero will help some San Diegans, but frustrate others.The Fed reduced its Federal Funds Rate to near zero for the first time since the Great Recession of 2008. The move, in reponse to the Coronavirus outbreak, will help keep auto loan rates low and mortgage rates near historic lows. It will also, however, lower earnings from interest bearing savings accounts. Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate, predicted the economy to go into a recession, but said the low borrowing rates would help jump start spending once activity picks up again. "Coming out of that, one of the things that's going to give the economy a boost to recover from that will be these brutally low interest rates that entice consumers and businesses to resume borrowing and spending," McBride said. "Somebody concerned about losing their job is not going to go to go out and buy a car."Mortgage rates are already extremely low, with the average rate for a 30-year fixed is 3.36 percent. Still, that's above the all-time lows reached earlier this month, when the Federal Reserve made its first emergency cut. Mark Goldman, a loan officer for C2 Financial Corp., said there has been a rush to refinance since that earlier drop — a big reason why rates did not fall deeper."There's so much refinancing business going on right now that lenders can't stand a lot more business, so they price accordingly," Goldman said. Still, those mortgages rates will remain low as San Diego County enters what's typically its peak home buying season. 1613

The NRF says an "estimated 147.8 million U.S. consumers [are] expected to participate, up from 134.3 million last year, according to the annual survey released today."This includes both in-store and online shopping.This year had the shortest shopping window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, leaving shoppers nervous.Jessica Ramirez said she was so busy working she could only start shopping Saturday. She said the family had been to a few stores that day and she will get as much done as possible in the final countdown before Christmas.Dana Giusti was eating a candy cane while she shopped in Best Buy, saying her sugar fix was staving off anxiety about finishing up Christmas shopping and wrapping all the presents for her family.In Mission Valley, the Target parking lot was filled with lines of cars. Families had different plans of attack to tackle their lists. Some shopped online and picked up curbside, while others braved the crowds inside."NRF defines the holiday season as November 1 through December 31 and has forecast that sales will total between 7.9 and 0.7 billion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. While Are and Moore were able to avoid the jam getting to the show, they were not so lucky finding their way home.“My car is parked right on the other side of the bridge,” And said. “We’re going to have to take a Lyft because it’s a long way around.”The bridge had reopened by Saturday morning. 1601
