When 13-year-old Hania Aguilar?is laid to rest in North Carolina on Saturday her father will be nearly 3,000 miles away. The US State Department has denied a temporary visa for Noé Aguilar to travel from Guatemala to attend services for his teenage daughter, according to the father's attorney."I had hoped they would find it in their hearts to let me be there for my daughter's funeral," Aguilar told CNN in a brief phone interview Friday."It's very sad. She was my princess. She will always be my princess."Immigration attorney Naimeh Salem said US embassy officials in Guatemala denied the temporary visa on grounds that Aguilar "didn't have enough ties to his home country, Guatemala.""That is not true," she said. "He has family there and his own business." 774

When students across the US walk out of class for 17 minutes today, many of them will be wearing orange. It's more than just a simple choice in clothing — it's meant to send a powerful message. The color choice dates back to at least 2013 when 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed in Chicago. Hadiya was an honor student who was killed in a case of mistaken identity -- a week after she performed at one of the events surrounding President Obama's second inauguration. Her parents, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton and Nathaniel Pendleton, picked the color orange to honor her and to call for gun reform. Why? It's what hunters wear to protect themselves — from other hunters. This is how their organization, We are Orange, explains it:"Orange is what hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others from harm. Orange is a bright, bold color that demands to be seen. Orange expresses our collective hope as a nation — a hope for a future free from gun violence."The group published a video that ends with the quote "So tell me, can you see me now?"Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-control advocacy nonprofit, learned of the movement and brought it to the national level. The movement and choice of color has not gone without criticism, however. The National Rifle Association called the campaign "pointless" and a "thinly veiled anti-gun stunt" in a statement in its journal, America's 1st Freedom. It's not just students who have been wearing orange since the Parkland shooting. Celebrities at the Oscars this year also wore orange pins. 1565
Wildlife biologists with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida shared a shocking python find in Collier-Seminole State Forest on Thursday. An invasive Burmese python's eyes were a little bigger than its stomach when it decided to devour a white-tailed deer fawn. Officials say pythons have been known to kill and ingest large prey and this was a record breaking meal. Officials stumbled upon the python with the massive prey inside. The biologists removed the python out of the wild into an open area and the python was stressed so it pushed the deer out of its mouth. In the photo below you can see the breathing tube and tongue of the python as it has its mouth wrapped around the deer. Biologists believe it is the largest python-to-prey ratio documented. The python was 31.5 pounds and the deer was 35 pounds; 111% of the python's mass. The findings will be published in the March 2018 issue of the Herpetological Review.“This observation is another important piece of evidence for the negative impact invasive Burmese pythons are having on native wildlife across the Greater Everglades Ecosystem” said Ian Bartoszek, Conservancy of Southwest Florida wildlife biologist. “Imagine the potential consequences to the state and federally protected Florida panther if Burmese pythons adversely affect the number of white-tailed deer, a panther’s primary prey.”Biologists are focused on the impact the python is having across the food chain. Since 2013, the Conservancy and its research partners have been conducting research to document the invasive Burmese python's biology and behavior in Collier County, including the tracking, removal and necropsy of captured pythons.Kelly Bazzle is the Digital Executive Producer at Scripps Station WFTS. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a retired firefighter who was upset with a mask ordinance in the city of Wichita, Kansas, has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill the mayor. The Wichita Eagle reports that police say the 59-year-old suspect could face a charge of criminal threat.Democratic Mayor Brandon Whipple said someone had read him text messages received by another city official that asked about the mayor’s address and threatened his life.Whipple says the suspect talked about tyranny in the messages and was upset about the mask mandates and not being able to see his mother because of coronavirus restrictions.“He said he was going to kidnap me and slash my throat and he needed my address because I needed to see the hangman — me and everyone who, something about tyranny,” said Whipple. The Eagle reports that the mayor has been an online target of anti-mask activists after he pushed for a citywide mask requirement to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.Whipple says he will now have an increased security presence around his home to protect him and his family. The Wichita Police Department told The Eagle that it’s investigating the threats and that no other local officials are believed to have been targeted at this time. This incident comes after law enforcement arrested several men who authorities say plotted to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at her vacation home. Federal agents ended up foiling that plot and are charging the “violent extremists.” 1515
