SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans could soon be using just their faces to board a plane, a cruise ship or get into a rock concert. It's because more companies are testing, or rolling out, the controversial facial recognition technology. "Facial recognition is great if it works. If it doesn't, it produces problems," said Stephen Cobb, senior security researcher at ESET. A Ticketmaster-owned company will soon test facial recognition to get people into events faster. In other words, a person could theoretically upload an image of their face onto an app, and then go right into the event without stopping for a ticket scan or, potentially, a security check.Jet Blue rolled out the facial recognition technology last year, and Royal Caribbean cruises is starting to do the same. "It sounds alright but it also sounds kind of weird to have your face in there," said Kathy Nagy, who used a mobile ticket to get into Wednesday's Padres game. "I think that having a ticket on your phone is just as fast as showing your face."Cobb said there are many concerns over how companies will maintain and protect people's data, including even whether they have the capabilities to avoid breaches."I don't see any commercial roll out of facial recognition which is purely around efficiency," he said. "Frankly, I have doubts around efficiency of the technology at this point."U.S. Customs and Border Protection is already using facial recognition technology at Lindbergh Field to scan international arrivals. The San Diego Police Department uses a mobile facial recognition device to confirm identities during certain arrests, such as when suspects won't provide their identity, or provide a false one. Earlier this month, San Francisco banned government agencies, including the police, from using facial recognition. 1808

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego firefighters came to the rescue of a Mountain View family after they lost their home to a fire the day after Christmas. The fire left seven people displaced after tearing through the home just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. The fire burned through one of two homes on the lot and the family says they had to pull bars off the window to escape the fire, leaving four people injured. While crews responded and were able to get the fire quickly under control, the family lost everything — including Christmas presents that two little girls who lived in the burned home had unwrapped just one day earlier. That's when San Diego Fire-Rescue stepped in. Sunday, firefighters from Stations 12 and 19 delivered gift cards, toys, and clothing to help the family through their loss. "The gifts were courtesy of the San Diego City Fire Fighters Local 145. The family was very appreciative of this wonderful surprise that illustrates the generous spirit of the holiday season," the department said on social media. The family has also started a GoFundMe to help with expenses due to the fire. 1149

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans are bracing for another winter storm expected to bring rain and snow to the county Monday. The latest round of wet weather is expected to be the heaviest in San Diego County, bringing between half an inch to an inch of rain to the coast. According to the National Weather Service, parts of San Diego County could see heavy snow. RELATED: Check today's forecast in your areaA Winter Weather Advisory is scheduled to take effect for the mountains at 3 p.m. Monday and last until 12 p.m. Tuesday. The NWS says elevations will be between 5,000 to 5,500 feet for the region's mountains. Elevations above 5,500 feet could see between five and 10 inches of snow accumulation. “Highest amounts will be southeast of Big Bear in and around Mt. San Gorgonio, over Mt. San Jacinto, and over Mt. Laguna where locally up to a foot is possible,” the National Weather Service said. Meteorologists are warning about slippery roads in areas where snow is expected. RELATED: California's drought nearly vanishes as rain drenches Golden StateThe recent rain may be bad for travel, but recent storms have carried California almost entirely out of its drought. Currently, all of San Diego County is drought-free, while only 0.6 percent of the state remains in moderate drought. 1296

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Resources are available throughout San Diego County for victims of domestic violence who believe their situation may turn life threatening.“There’s nothing more tragic than this happening. This is exactly what we never want to see happen again,” said Heather Finlay with the YWCA. Finlay says she was devastated after learning of the mother and her children killed over the weekend. YWCA offers an emergency shelter and transitional housing for parents and families dealing with domestic violence. RELATED: Document details chilling text messages sent to woman killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicide“One in four women and one in seven men will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes,” Finlay added. According to SANDAG, in 2018, more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents were reported in San Diego County. “Leaving an intimate partnership is never easy especially if there are children involved,” said Yvette Lopez-Cooper with the San Diego Family Justice Center. RELATED: Parents, 3 children killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicideThe center has a number of resources available, including if someone decides to file a restraining order. The order doesn’t become active until the abuser is served and made aware of the action. “Many times, these court orders do work and the violent behaviors stops. In cases where the court order is ignored and the violence escalates it’s important for that individual to develop a safety care plan,” she added. A safety care plan includes having a packed bag somewhere safe with clothes and copies of personal documents and planning an escape route. RELATED: Family of murder-suicide victims speaks about tragedyMost centers that offer services to domestic violence victims can also help them develop a safety plan before and after they leave the relationship. 1839

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police officers will increase patrols near area houses of worship following Saturday's deadly shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.SDPD Chief David Nisleit advised there are no indications of any threats with a connection to San Diego, but out of an abundance of caution, patrols would be increased."We are monitoring the situation in Pittsburgh and communicating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners. At this time, there is nothing to indicate a connection to San Diego. However, in an abundance of caution, you will see extra patrols at houses of worship," Nisleit tweeted. 642
