(AP) — A Florida sheriff says he will deputize every gun owner in his county to put down any violent protests his deputies can’t handle alone.Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels gave no indication in a three-minute video released Wednesday that any demonstrations are planned in his suburban Jacksonville county.Daniels also said he would protect any peaceful protests, but added that if anyone starts “tearing up Clay County, that is not going to be acceptable.”“If we can’t handle you, I’ll exercise the power and authority as the sheriff and I’ll make special deputies of every lawful gun owner in the county and I’ll deputize them to this one purpose: to stand in the gap between lawlessness and civility,” said Daniels, sporting a white cowboy hat as he stood in front of 18 deputies.Daniels, who is African American, said in the video that his department has a “great relationship” with its residents, but “if you come to Clay County and think for one second we’ll bend our backs for you, you’re sadly mistaken.”“The second you step out from up under the protection of the Constitution, we’ll be waiting on you and give you everything you want: all the publicity, all the pain, all the glamour and glory for all that five minutes will give you.”Daniels, a Republican finishing his first term, is being challenged by six opponents in the upcoming election. She says the US government needs to grant her political asylum.Belarus-born Anastasia Vashukevich claims she has proof of Russian interference in the 2016 US election in the form of more than an hour of audio recordings and photos of meetings."I am ready to help with an investigation if they help us get out of here," says the 21-year old.None of the alleged recordings or photos of those meetings have been made public.'A plan for the election'Vashukevich's arrival in this Thai detention center is a bizarre and tangled saga.Vashukevich, who also goes by the pseudonym Nastya Rybka, was part of a group led by author and free sex advocate Alexander Kirillov arrested in February in the Thai resort town of Pattaya while running so-called "sex training" sessions.Thai police confirmed they are processing the paperwork for the eventual deportation of Vashukevich and Kirillov on charges relating to visa violations, back to Russia.On Monday CNN met with Vashukevich and Kirillov inside the detention center. The scene was chaotic, loud and miserably hot.Vashukevich spoke through bars within touching distance of Kirillov, who stood barefoot with other male prisoners behind a second row of bars.Vashukevich, who claims to be the former mistress of Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, says she witnessed several meetings in 2016 and 2017 between Deripaska and at least three un-named Americans.Deripaska -- who denies any affair -- is a subject of political intrigue in US political circles, owing to his longstanding relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin."They had a plan for the election," says Vashukevich of the men.When he was confronted by CNN last year, Deripaska called allegations that he may have been a back channel from the Kremlin to the Trump campaign "fake news."Regarding his alleged relationship with Vashukevich, a spokesperson for Deripaska told CNN: "This is clearly an attempt by Anastasia Vashukevitch (aka Nastya Rybka) to politicize the accusations of the Thai police. "We’ve been here 30 years or so."She prefers connecting with the keys of her piano in her Gunnison, Colorado, home.The pandemic has forced her to connect with her students through the keys on her computer keyboard.“I love children. I love being around children," Williams said.A school district-issued internet hot-spot lets her teach virtually, but she wants the real thing.“We’re hoping for brick and mortar, as they say, because that’s the best way for learning," Williams said.Williams is a preschool special education teacher in the Gunnison Watershed School District, a rural school corporation with around 2,000 students.Geographically, the district reach is the second largest in Colorado."We are about the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined," said Superintendent Leslie Nichols."The spread-out nature of our staff and our families have really brought internet access to the forefront of one of our biggest challenges," Dr. Nichols said.Dr. Nichols says most of the district is outside broadband and cellphone range. He urged Democrats to join in negotiations.“We have one foot in the pandemic and one foot in the recovery,” McConnell said Monday calling the timing of the legislation a “crossroads” for the country.The HEALS Act will include a second round of stimulus funds for the same group of Americans who received the last stimulus check.
