SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing a possible recall election as the nation's most populous state struggles to emerge from the coronavirus crisis.Organizers for "Recall Gavin 2020" say they have collected around 800,000 signatures so far. That's more than half of the nearly 1.5 million petition signatures needed to place the recall on the ballot.But state records show just under 500,000 have been turned in so far; of those, 46,756 are from San Diego County.Recall adviser Randy Economy says interest is higher since it was revealed Newsom dined with friends at an opulent restaurant while telling state residents to stay home and not socialize."He's done this to himself," Economy says, pointing out that many business owners are upset at how Newsom has handled the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing shutdowns."More people have suffered who are the heart and soul of California and the backbone of our economy, and we basically have had it."Economy says his group does not plan to hire professional signature gatherers. Instead, they're relying on a network of 30,000 volunteers across the state. They plan to use social media and their website to gain momentum."People have paying attention," he says, "They're at home, they don't have much to do, they're always on social media..."You can download the petition. You can sign it in your home. You can have your family member sign it. You can have your neighbor sign it. It's just just real simple."But a grassroots movement may not be enough. Newsom still has high approval ratings, and won his recent election by the largest margin in California history.UC San Diego Political Science Department Chair Thad Kousser says the 2003 recall of Gov. Gray Davis provides a good comparison.In that recall, the only successful recall of a governor in California history, supports got a huge financial boost from Darrell Issa and also had a big-name challenger in Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.Kousser says this recall effort has neither."Without the money that it takes to set in place the machinery of direct democracy in California, we're not going to see a recall come to fruition," he says.Newsom hasn't spoken publicly about the recall, but his office released a statement in June. It was identical to a statement he released in 2019 when facing a different recall election.In it, Newsom says the people behind the recall want to "bring Washington's broken government to California.""The last thing California needs is another wasteful special election, supported by those who demonize California's people and attack California's values," it says.When 10News presented that statement to Economy, he scoffed, adding "This man has the audacity to be able to lecture us on on politics and, and how he has been able to conduct himself behind closed doors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are searching for a person suspected of starting a trash can fire that scorched the side of a Normal Heights home early Thursday morning.At around 2 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the 3300 block of Meade Avenue in response to a trash can on fire next to a house.Some residents told ABC 10News they heard noises at the trash cans and the saw a fire begin to ignite.Screams from residents apparently scared off a person believed to have sparked the blaze.As fire crews arrived, flames from the trash can burned the side of one house. The fire was quickly knocked down before it could engulf the entire home.ABC 10News learned one person was displaced due to the fire; no injuries were reported.A description of the person suspected of starting the fire was not immediately available.Arson investigators are involved in the fire probe. 889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Connecting children, teens, and families to the power of reading has been the mission of San Diego nonprofit Words Alive for more than two decades.During this pandemic, they haven’t skipped a beat.“The San Diego community is so deeply invested in the importance of literacy and just how critical literacy and education are for the success of our students,” said Rachael Orose, Executive Director for Words Alive.Teaching kids reading and writing skills at a young age is key to that success. Orose said through Words Alive, teachers and volunteers are making sure all students have the opportunity and tools to learn through several different programs, including Read Aloud, Teen Services & Family Literacy.“All of the data tells us if we can make you a reader, your family will be a reader. The students who we serve are often in low-income neighborhoods; they’re wrestling with homelessness, hunger, poverty, violence,” she said.This year alone, Words Alive has received thousand of book donations through community partnerships, most recently on Wednesday.“We picked up just over 1,700 books thanks to a partnership with the San Diego Council on Literacy and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Those books are zero to 18, they’re headed to the Monarch School in the coming weeks,” she said.“With Words Alive, the books actually belong to the students, they’re able to write in them, they’re able to annotate them” said Jeffra Becknell, who teaches high school history at Monarch School, which serves students K-12 impacted by homelessness. “Having a physical book in their hand is such a wonderful feeling.”Becknell has been participating with Words Alive’s Adolescent Book Group program for ten years. “The Adolescent Book Group has been an amazing experience for my students and me; the volunteers come into the classroom, we read a book together, and then we have a book club discussion about it,” she said.During this pandemic, discussions have moved online, but the mission has remained the same.“We had our Adolescent Book Group online; we had it as a Zoom call. Clearly, it’s really different, but it was the same conversation,” said Becknell.Perhaps most importantly, Orose said Words Alive makes representation a priority.“The content reflects their lived experience, the characters look like the students we serve, the authors have similar experiences,” she said.Words Alive currently has more than 1,000 volunteers but is always looking for more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Councilman David Alvarez says he's tired of driving by vacant storefronts in urban communities like East Village and Barrio Logan. He believes city rules requiring some high-rises to put retail space on ground floors are too rigid. Alvarez has put forth a proposal that would allow for more flexibility and creativity, giving buildings the option to put housing and live-work spaces on ground floors. "We need to think outside the box when it comes to housing. We have placed so many rules on the books it makes it hard to do things differently," said Alvarez. If passed by the council, Alvarez says the permits to convert spaces would be temporary. After a period of time, potentially 10 years, the owner would reevaluate whether a retail store could then succeed. If not, they could apply for another permit. East Village alone has seen multiple businesses shut its doors in recent months, including Smashburger, Bottega Americano, SOL CAL Cafe, The Market Hall and Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery.  1054

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least one person was injured and another person was trapped following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 on Wednesday.San Diego Police said three vehicles were involved in a collision on southbound I-5 at SR-905 just before 4:30 p.m.An officer received minor injuries in the crash, according to SDPD.
