SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus outbreak is filling many with fear, anxiety and depression. To cope with these feelings, 10News spoke with licensed psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel on strategies to get through the chaos."Evolutionarily we are not built for quick adaptation." Carcel said, that's why the reptilian part of our brain is freaking out. "One of my favorite sayings, it's not mine but I use it all the time, is relax nothing is in our control."READ RELATED: San Diego County libraries go digital to fight spread of coronavirusCarcel said mindfulness activities like yoga and meditation bring you into the moment and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, to calm the brain. Her first piece of advice for coping with all these changes to your daily life is to set a schedule. A schedule for you and any kids will bring back a sense of normalcy, and comfort. If you're feeling down, or isolated, find a furry friend. Adoptions and fostering is up in San Diego.RELATED: Where to get help amid coronavirus"Take time to walk your dog, play with your cat. They relieve stress quite a bit, so that's good," Carcel said smiling.Checking on a friend during this time of isolation is also important. "That is actually one of the worst times for folks who are specifically suffering from domestic violence concerns. We must take this incredibly seriously," Carcel added. She urges anyone who needs help to call the Crisis Line at 888-724-7240.Another serious issue we're facing is financial stress, many losing their job from the shut down. Carcel says while these are unprecedented times, we will endure, "here's the thing, humans are resilient. We have made it through a bunch of different, terrible things in our evolutionary process and we must remember that."She advises enjoying the time we have inside, by indulging in a book, playing a board game, or calling someone you love."Just surf the wave, we're going to make it through," she said.OPTUM has a free 24/7 helpline for anyone who needs emotional support, you can call 866-342-6892. 2060

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sunday, doctors revealed President Donald Trump is taking a steroid, called Dexamethasone, as the latest medication for his coronavirus treatment."We just don't know what's going to happen next, things are very unpredictable," Dr. Christian Ramers, Chief of Population Health at Family Health Centers, said.Ramers has seen thousands of COVID-19 patients and says the disease has two phases, virus production and inflammatory. He said the shift generally happens seven to ten days in."Once things kind of shift, the damage actually comes more from the immune system's response than the virus itself," Ramers said, which is why a steroid like Dexamethasone is prescribed."Where it showed a decrease in mortality was in people who already required oxygen or if they were even sicker than that and were on ventilation," said Ramers, citing a study.Sunday, doctors stated the president received oxygen Friday before being taken to Walter Reed Medical Center, but said his oxygen levels only dipped to 94% and 93%. Normal levels are 95% and above.Ramers said studies show if you give the steroid too early or to someone who has a mild case, it could cause harm. "If you dial down the immune system too early or in a case that is really mild, you might have the opposite effect you're looking for," Ramers said. There's also a list of side effects."If you use them for a chronic basis or for more than a couple of days there is a long list of things it can cause. They can make your bones thinner, it can give you high blood sugar, diabetes, it can make people have trouble sleeping," Ramers said. With the president, as in any case, Ramers said we need to keep watching, "watching very carefully to what's happening day by day, it's going to be very important especially in this 7-10 day period because things could take a turn at any moment."Ramers said there are experimental coronavirus drug trials coming to San Diego, click here for more information or to sign up. 1988

Those who venture into the Black Spire Outpost can live out their "Star Wars" fantasies building their own lightsaber or droid, flying the Millennium Falcon on the "Smuggler's Run" ride, or sinking their teeth into some Endorian tip-Yip or Braised Shaak Roast. 1827

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced new safety measures for its offices Thursday as the coronavirus pandemic continues across the state.Starting Thursday morning, every person who goes to a DMV location will get their temperature checked before they're allowed inside.Previously, only people getting in-car driving tests were subject to temperature checks.A DMV spokesperson told ABC 10News they'll follow CDC guidelines, only letting people inside if their temperature is below 100.4 degrees."We always follow the guidelines that are issued by the CDC," said DMV spokesperson Cynthia Moreno. "So, following their guidelines, we decided that it would be best to start taking the temperature of all of our customers and our employees to make sure that we follow the safety protocols."The temperature screening is in addition to safety measures already in place, which include mask requirements, social distancing, limited services available and hand-washing and sanitizing stations located throughout each field office.Because of all that, DMV officials say it's best to do as much as you can on the agency's website and avoid coming into the offices, if possible."We want to make sure the people who come to our offices feel safe," said Moreno. "There's a lot happening in the world right now. So, if you can do stuff from the comfort of your home, it's best to go online and see what's available." 1444
