(CNN) -- We've all been tempted to bring a little bit of paradise home from our holidays. But the urge has backfired on a French couple, who are facing up to six years in prison for removing sand from a beach in Sardinia, where they had been on vacation.The Italian island's white sand is protected, and tourists face fines and even jail time for removing it from local beaches -- but the couple say they did not realize they were committing a crime.Police in the northern city of Porto Torres found the sand while making routine checks on cars waiting to board a ferry to Toulon in southern France.They spotted some bottles filled with sand through the window of the car, and arrested the couple, a man and woman in their 40s, police told CNN.Overall, 14 plastic bottles containing around 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of white sand were seized, police said.The couple were reported to a court in the city of Sassari for aggravated theft and they risk a fine of up to �3,000 (,300) and between one and six years' imprisonment.Police told CNN that the tourists said they were unaware of the laws about removing sand, but noted that the island's beaches have signs in several languages informing visitors.Theft of white sand and rocks from Sardinia's beaches is very common, a police officer said, and there is an illegal market for them on the internet."The people of Sardinia are very angry with tourists that steal shells and sand, because it's a theft (from) future generations that also puts at risk a delicate environment," the officer told CNN.Sand thieves are usually picked up at airports, in bag searches and by scanners.A Facebook page, "Sardegna Rubata e Depredata" -- "Sardinia, robbed and plundered" -- which was set up by a group of security officials from the island's airports, campaigns against the depletion of Sardinia's beaches."The purpose of the page is to raise public awareness about this problem," one of the page administrators previously told CNN Travel."During the last 20 years of activity we have seized tens and tens of tons of material ... (KGTV) -- A small plane was forced to land on a freeway in San Clemente Monday, but no injuries were reported and no vehicles were hit.According to the California Highway Patrol, the emergency landing was reported shortly before 12:50 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near Basilone Road, north of Camp Pendleton.CHP officials said the pilot was flying from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to San Diego’s Montgomery Field when his plane began having mechanical issues while over Camp Pendleton.The pilot, who has 18 years of flying experience, was aware he needed to land immediately and considered Highway 101 [Old Pacific Highway parallel to I-5] as an emergency landing spot before choosing I-5, according to the CHP.The pilot was able to wait for a break in vehicles before guiding the aircraft safely onto the freeway. The plane landed and came to a stop on the No. 4 lane before it was eventually moved to the right shoulder.The aircraft remained on the shoulder and off the freeway lanes as of 2:20 p.m.The pilot, who was the aircraft's only occupant, was unhurt, an FAA official told ABC 10News. (KGTV) — Hundreds of thousands of unemployment debit cards in California have been frozen due to fraud, according to the state's Employment Development Department.The EDD says 350,000 debit cards have been frozen because of a variety of fraud indicators, including a high number of claims at a single address. It wasn't clear how much the debit cards were worth, but law enforcement officials say they've uncovered fake cards amounting to ,000 each, KABC reported."The Department’s top priority is to quickly verify the identity of any claimants in this group that may have been impacted by scammer attacks, while we work to shut down the potentially fraudulent claims," the EDD said.Impacted EDD claimants who may have their cards frozen are advised to take the following action:"Claimants who receive an email, text message, or mailed notice from EDD requesting them to provide identity verification documents should visit EDD’s website to login or register for a UI Online account and upload the documents through the Document Upload feature. The EDD has implemented various methods to help expedite the verification process. Payments will be reestablished for claimants verified to be legitimate and accounting will be done to clear them from any connection to a possible fraudulent claim initiated in their name or involving their address.For claimants who receive an email, text message, or mailed notice and need assistance in providing the identity documents, a new AskEDD dropdown menu has been implemented for them to provide contact information following these steps:Select the category 'Unemployment Insurance Benefits'Select the sub-category of 'Payments'Select the topic “Frozen EDD Debit Card” and press Continue to provide contact and claim information.For claimants who can’t access funds on their EDD Debit Card and have not received any messages from the EDD, it’s likely that Bank of America has frozen the card because of a suspected transaction, and EDD does not need to verify their identity.
