SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A series of closures are set for Interstate 5 throughout June and possibly into July for Mid-Coast trolley construction.SANDAG says the closures will allow crews to remove and install temporary wooden structures to support the trolley bridge, also called falsework. The falsework currently on Voigt Drive will be removed and installed just south of Nobel Drive to support a second trolley overcrossing. Both trolley overcrossings will span the I-5, SANDAG says.A full closure of southbound I-5 lanes will start on Sunday, June 9, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night Sunday through Thursday, and will run through Friday, June 28. The closure covers I-5/I-805 interchange to La Jolla Colony Dr. Detours will be set up for motorists to use southbound I-805 and westbound State Route 52 in place of the stretch of I-5.Once the southbound closure is complete, a full northbound closure will be needed.The Mid-Coast trolley will eventually extend the Blue Line trolley from Old Town Transit Center to the UC San Diego area. The report, released Thursday by Apartment List, claims that the number of “super commuters,” people who travel more than 90 minutes to work each way, has increased by more than 31 percent since 2005. In the same time frame, the number of Americans working from home has increased by 76 percent, according to the report. Another California city, Stockton, pulled ahead of all other metros in the U.S. with more than 11 percent of its population considered super commuters. Apartment List says the cheaper cost of living when compared to the San Francisco Bay Area is a contributing factor. While the share of super commuters in San Diego may be modest, some people have decided not to commute at all. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After eight weeks of rehabilitation, SeaWorld San Diego rescue teams release seven rescued sea lions back into the ocean. Six of the sea lions were malnourished pups when they were first rescued. It took rescue crews about two months to help them regain their strength and nutrients needed. The seventh sea lion was discovered on La Jolla Shores with a shark bite wound to his shoulder. Rescue crews tell 10News they watched him for three days and then took him to their veterinarians because they noticed he wasn't using his left fin at all. After x-rays, SeaWorld San Diego vets discovered several broken bones in his front left fin and his left shoulder was snapped in half. Intense rehabilitation over the past eight weeks has him in good condition to return to the wild Tuesday. During the rescue return trip, General Hospital actress and dedicated animal advocate Carolyn Hennesy joined. Hennesy works closely with the SeaWorld San Diego rescue center and often joins them on return trips. As part of tradition, before animals are released, Hennesy said a few words to the sea lions, "Considering myself part of the SeaWorld family, I will say it was wonderful having you." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A U.S. Navy sailor from the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier was injured on his ship Friday.The sailor was struck by a towed aircraft on the flight deck around 6:30 p.m.A Navy news release reported the sailor was flown to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla for treatment. The sailor's injuries are not life-threatening.The USS Carl Vinson is conducting a training exercise off the coast of Southern California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Oceanside family is mourning the loss of a beloved father to COVID-19.David Bustamante first started feeling sick during the first week of November."Started with a cold. Congestion, and then a cough in his chest," said his daughter Samantha Bustamante.A few days later, he drove himself to the hospital, received a COVID-19 test, and was sent home. By the time he learned he was positive, his symptoms had gotten worse."He was having trouble breathing, really raspy," Samantha said.Bustamante decided to stay at the home of a friend, who had also tested positive. On the morning of Nov. 13, Bustamante, a father of two grown children, passed away in his sleep, at the age of 64."It’s very hard knowing he’s gone, and it’s heartbreaking ... so quick, suddenly and out of the blue. Very unexpected," said Samantha.Samantha says her father loved his family and loved his work in the inspection process for a new home builder."He was resilient, hard-working, and caring with a big heart," said Samantha.During the pandemic, he kept working. She doesn't know how he contracted COVID-19, but does know he was diligent about wearing a mask."All I can say to people is to be as safe as you can in everything you do ... You just don't know what's going to happen," said Samantha.On Thanksgiving, Samantha will join some extended family is a small get-together, with one fewer place setting"He’s definitely going to be missed.
