Those two words cause a lot of stress, anxiety, even depression in so many Americans out there.Like Denise Ferguson.“Oh, my student loans are going to outlast me!” Ferguson said.Like 41 million other Americans, Denise is drowning in student loan debt — 0,000 in her case.“It’s funny because I’m an attorney and a lot of people assume that we attorneys are rich and wealthy,” she said.Well, rest assured, Denise is not one of those types of attorneys.She works with abused and neglected children in the foster care system.“We’re the only alleged first-world country that has all these issues with student loans and people being put into debt in order to do something good,” she said.Denise went to a state school in Pennsylvania for college, the University of Akron for law school.Fifteen years later, the amount of student loan debt she has barely has a dent in it.“If I win the lotto, it’ll get paid off. If I don’t win the lotto, there’s no hope that that’s ever going away,” Denise said. “My house only cost ,000 if that puts anything in perspective.”The average student loan debt for graduates is about ,000. It's the second-highest consumer debt category in the U.S., coming in only after mortgage debt.Since the federal CARES Act went into effect, more than 40 million federal student loan borrowers have had their payments paused and interest rates set to 0%.While that is set to expire on Jan. 31 now, it’s not clear what the incoming Biden administration will do.There are pushes and proposals to wipe out student loan debt — anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But nothing is clear, nothing is done, and experts say, do not rely on what could be.“Do not wait until January to expect any executive orders, there’s just so much uncertainty going on right now,” said Dr. Lakshmi Balasubramanyan, a banking and finance professor at Case Western Reserve University.She said it is crucial to have a plan in place before payments start back up again.Contact your loan servicer and talk through your individual situation.If you’ve lost or changed your job during the pandemic, switch to an income-based repayment plan, or discuss hardship options.“If you plan for the worst-case scenario, the best-case scenario is where there’s some loan forgiveness — then that would be a pleasant surprise but right now, you should plan to pay it off because you don’t want to go into default status,” Balasubramanyan said.She also advises heading to studentaid.gov to see if you possibly qualify for any loan forgiveness programs.Jeremy DiTullio, of the Cleveland Financial Group, says the worst thing borrowers can do is wait and hope for relief that may not come.“I would plan for starting to make your payments. Worst case scenario is that there is some forgiveness or some relief and now you have choices,” DiTullio said. He also suggests borrowers "earn differently" during the pandemic if they have to, to avoid defaulting. Now the company is defending the initiative, and calling it something much more mundane: A "corporate news journalistic responsibility promotional campaign."Sinclair, America's largest operator of local TV stations, is in the spotlight after a controversial promo video went viral over the weekend.Some staffers say they're embarrassed by the promos and concerned about their own credibility as journalists. A few local anchors and reporters are even reacting publicly, risking the ire of management.But Sinclair senior vice president of news Scott Livingston is defending the promos as a "well-researched journalistic initiative focused on fair and objective reporting."In an internal memo obtained by CNNMoney, Livingston slammed what he called "misleading, often defamatory stories" about the company. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Navy officials say a helicopter crewman was killed last week in a fuel tank accident at Naval Air Station North Island.Officials say Aircrewman 1st Class Jonathan Clement was taken to the hospital after a fuel tank detached from an HH-60H Seahawk helicopter, striking him and a fellow officer on July 30.The 31-year-old later died at the hospital the following day, according to the Navy Times. The other sailor was treated and released from the hospital after suffering minor injuries, officials say.Both sailors were assigned to the “Firehawks” of North Island-based Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 85, the Times reported.The Navy Safety Center reported the incident on August 6, but only indicated that the helicopter crew was conducting ‘hot seat” training when the accident happened.Hot seat training is conducted so crews can practice switching out from an aircraft without turning off the engines.Clement was an 11-year Navy veteran originally from Florida. 1003

Cottonwood, Arizona police have arrested a 32-year-old woman in what they call, "One of the worst cases of neglect some of the officers involved have ever seen."Sarah Easterday-Shortridge faces several charges in connection with the crime. On the morning of March 10, the Verde Valley Regional SWAT team served a search warrant at a home.Officers were made aware of the residence after a person received medical treatment from being pistol-whipped by a man staying at the home the night before. Police say officers found Easterday-Shortridge's three children, all under the age of five, living in "deplorable conditions." The abandoned home reportedly had feces, trash, debris, broken glass, and rotting food throughout. Officers described the residence as a "flop-house" for drug users.The children were transported to a medical center where they received treatment and hygiene. Police say the kids were suffering from lice, open sores, scabies, bumps, and were covered in feces. The Department of Child Safety was called to the scene and the children were removed from Easterday-Shortridge’s custody, police said. She has been charged with several felonies including child abuse, endangerment, neglect or abuse of a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia.   1326
