SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video reveals a City Heights man was seconds away from a showdown with an armed intruder who got away with a "priceless" stone.Along 41st Street, past 6 p.m. Friday, a man whose face is hidden by a bandanna, was recorded creeping into D.R. Peck's back yard from a canyon. "The full mask is the scary part. Notice he has gloves," said Peck.In the video, the burglar discovers an unlocked door and enters a bedroom. More than 10 minutes later, he emerges with a briefcase. He drops it off before heading back inside. Not long after, the cameras show Peck wheeling in the trash can near the front of the home after returning home from running errands. At the same time, the intruder — likely hearing Peck return — bails out of the house through the back entrance. A flash of a knife seen in his hand."I walk in and see a mess ... Oh my God. Someone's been in my house," said Peck.Amid the ransacked bedroom, there were missing items: electronics, a special edition "The Flash" comic book worth more than 0, jewelry, and a red heart stone that he bought for his wife Wendy 10 years ago after proposing. It wasn't expensive, but it was priceless."She knew she was loved, exactly what I was wanting to say to her," said Peck. The two were only married for 27 days before Wendy died after a battle with ovarian cancer. Peck kept that heart stone close to his heart."When I looked at it, it reminded me I had soulmate, and her and I were that," said Peck.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego could make the unorthodox move of refusing to reveal a directory of its 11,000-plus employees.A new memo from City Attorney Mara Elliott's office says officials fear doing so could increase the risk of cyber attack. "You have indicated that releasing all City employee email addresses at once could create a potential threat to the City's cybersecurity because it would make it substantially easier for bad actors to launch phishing attacks against the City, which could interrupt critical City operations," says the Sept. 20 memo. The Union-Tribune recently made a California Public Records Act request for names, work email addresses and phone numbers of all city employees, which is disclosable under the act. Cyber security experts say public agencies have been facing a barrage of hacking attempts because they control critical civic operations. Last year, hackers shut down some operations at the Port of San Diego, and the city of Atlanta has spent millions to recover a system after a ,000 ransomware attack. Ted Harrington, an executive partner at Independent Security Evaluators, said hackers often try to get victims to open attachments in emails, known as phishing. "It's an attack method where when the victim either clicks a link or downloads an attachment, that automatically installs some sort of malware or directors that particular victim to a malicious website, and then all kinds of bad things can happen from there," he said. The City Attorney's memo existing case law suggests there are circumstances where not disclosing the list of workers outweighs the public interest in disclosing them, but leaves it up to the city on a final determination. Jeff Light, the editor and publisher of the Union-Tribune, said in a statement that he understands the cyber security concern, but that it shouldn't keep the information from being disclosed. "Public information law in California says that 'access to information concerning the conduct of the people’s business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state,'" Light said. "I don’t see how that principle squares with this theory that the government should not reveal the phone extension or email of a city employee."The City Attorney memo notes that while the city may not release a full directory, residents do have access to contact information for city officials they may need to contact. It says the decision should be made based on credible facts and information. 2511

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 10News team is celebrating the return of morning reporter Marie Coronel."I'm so glad to be back here with you guys," she told the morning 10News team in an emotional appearance in the studio Wednesday.About three and half years ago, Marie and 10News photographer Mike Gold were in Mira Mesa preparing for a live report on storm damage when heavy branches snapped off a massive eucalyptus tree crushing the both of them. Mike was able to recover from his injuries and was back to work a few months later, but it's taken years for Marie to recover from multiple injuries and return to the newsroom."This has been a crazy long journey...it's been so tough emotionally, physically, and me going through physical therapy, then doing all of this while raising our three little boys," she said.During her recovery, the native San Diegan stayed active and connected in the community through social media. But Marie acknowledged that her return was met with some jitters when 10News anchor Jim Patton asked what it felt like to be back."I was like the new kid walking in yesterday but then now in day two I'm like, 'let's get back to business.'"Marie credits her recovery and perseverance to the enormous support from family, friends, faith, co-workers, and the 10News – ABC San Diego KGTV viewers, she said."I’ve kept my eyes and ears on our community, and there are so many stories I can’t wait to start reporting. I’m thrilled to be back with our 10News team and telling your stories," Marie posted on her 10News Facebook pageFollow Marie Coronel at https://www.facebook.com/MarieCoronel10News/. 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The first round of artists for San Diego’s Wonderfront music festival, supported by the star power of Tony Hawk, Trevor Hoffman, and Rob Machado, was announced Monday. The event will take place on seven stages in parks and on piers along the Port of San Diego, from South Embarcadero up to Broadway Pier. Wonderfront is scheduled for Nov. 22-24, 2019, the weekend before Thanksgiving. Wonderfront organizers plan to mix well-known stars with local favorites and emerging artists. “Our goal with this lineup was to have it stacked from start to finish each day with great artists. It’s hard to really call any certain bands our so-called headliners as so many lines of bands on this festival are all headliners in their own right,” said Wonderfront co-founder Paul Thornton. The first round of artists, announced Monday, include Miguel, Slightly Stoopid, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, MGMT, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Jam, Don Omar, Vince Staples, Tyga, Los Angeles Azules, Tucanes de Tijuana, Walk the Moon, Phantogram, X Ambassadors, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Lil Dicky, Big Gigantic, and Pennywise. A second round of artists will be named later in the summer, organizers said. North County resident Tony Hawk will have a presence at the festival with the Huckjam stage for music and a skateboarding ramp, where he and other pro skaters will perform tricks. “I’m excited to bring back the Huckjam format (choreographed and freestyle skating with live music) after 10 years of hiatus, and there is no better place for it than my hometown. I’m proud to be involved with Wonderfront, and it’s been a blast helping handpick the legendary punk bands for our stage.” Tony Hawk, Wonderfront Festival Partner. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 14 at 10 a.m. and start at 9 for a three-day pass, according to organizers. Subscribers to the festival’s WonderLIST will have access to pre-sale Early Bird discounts June 7.Get more information on the Wonderfront website. 2014
