"The staff and students of Kenosha Unified School District, along with members of the Kenosha community, continue to grapple with the tragic shooting incident that occurred in our community last spring. In recent weeks and days, the District received requests from students, parents, and the general public, including representatives of both families, concerning the District's position regarding memorializing or acknowledging the students involved. The District sought legal counsel with Lori M. Lubinsky, attorney with Axley Brynelson, LLP regarding these requests and has decided to follow the legal advice received.The District will not sanction any memorials or acknowledgements because it would be legally required to do so for all students involved in order to protect the District against possible legal claims. Instead, the District will remain neutral. While the District fully supports students and staff in moments of crisis, it cannot allow memorializing or acknowledging one student without allowing it for both.In addition, student-organized efforts will not be endorsed and/or supported by the District and/or its personnel. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A potential partnership between the San Diego Unified School District and UC San Diego could help prevent the spread of the coronavirus within the school district.On Tuesday, officials with SD Unified and UC San Diego will discuss a collaborative effort that will provide COVID-19 testing -- with rapid results -- for district students and staff members every two weeks.Under the proposed testing program, all students and staff would be tested even if no symptoms are shown. The plan is to get their more than 100,000 students and 15,000 staff members tested twice a month.School Board Vice President Richard Barrera said, “We can’t wait for the federal and state government to provide so we can reopen our schools. We have to take the initiative ourselves ... being able to test on our campuses both students and staff is the best way to get large numbers of people being tested. UC San Diego would bring health professionals onto our campuses to do the testing.”San Diego Unified School District schools are currently in Phase One of the district's reopening plan. Under Phase One, which began Oct. 13, teachers have returned to campuses to provide appointment-based, in-person instruction for elementary school students identified as having “the greatest needs.”Phase Two of the district’s reopening plan would begin for elementary school students on Jan. 4, 2021. (KGTV) -- A project that would create thousands of homes in San Diego County is heading to the ballot on March 3. If approved, Measure B, also known as Newland Sierra, would affirm the San Diego County Board of Supervisors’ unanimous approval of the changes to the general plan. The project includes 2,135 homes, 60 percent of which would be affordable for working families, according to Kenneth Moore, a spokesperson for the Yes on B campaign. The project would be built just off I-15 next to the cities of Escondido, San Marcos, and Vista. Newland Sierra also preserves more than 60 percent of the property as permanent open space. It would take another six to seven years to construct the entire project. Moore says construction on the infrastructure could begin as early as late 2021 or 2022. New homes would then start being sold and under construction by 2024. If the measure doesn’t get approved, however, Moore says that’s it for Newland Sierra. “Somebody could then move forward with the development of the current general plan zoning that allows a massive commercial development and estate homes," Moore says.
