SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report shows that the San Diego Unified School District in 2017 saw significant grade-level gains in reading and math scores.The program, called the National Assessment of Education Progress, or NAEP, shows that San Diego is the only large urban district in the nation to see significant test score increases in fourth-grade reading and math.San Diego Unified also performed significantly higher than public schools in large cities in both fourth and eighth-grade math and reading.The 2017 results mitigate a significant score drop in fourth-grade math in 2015, which the district says is due to the implementation of Common Core.The district said Tuesday that long-term data shows a generally upward trend overall.“San Diego Unified stands out as a hub of academic excellence and innovation, where students learn and thrive thanks to the dedication of our teachers,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “The NAEP results underscore the incredible teaching and learning that’s occurring in San Diego Unified schools every day.” 1064

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man sentenced to life behind bars after being convicted of shooting his coworker in his face. Julio Narvaez pleaded guilty to opening fire at his Phamatech company in 2017. "The consequences are something he has to bare," said judge Laura Halgren at his sentencing on Friday. Narvaez pleaded not guilty to shooting his coworker in the face at their Carmel Mountain Ranch office. Police say they got into an argument when Narvaez pulled out a gun from his desk and opened fire. The victim, Michael Limbag, is also the cousin of Narvaez's wife. He's still recovering two years later. "He has hearing loss," said Halgren. "There’s a fragment bullet in his brain that could move at any time. He has headaches every day, nightmares."The defense brought in a neurologist to testify. He said Narvaez may have a connection to Alzheimer's, but could not make a definitive diagnosis. That move then backfired for the defense. "If this really did play a role in Mr. Narvaez’s behavior, then he poses a danger and will continue to pose greater danger," said Halgren. "Whatever degenerative process he has could be offered an explanation for some of the behavior but doesn’t excuse it."Police say Narvaez tried to shoot the victim at least twice, but the gun jammed. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and use of a firearm with bodily injury. 1362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A jury returned several guilty verdicts Friday against a La Jolla restaurant owner accused of raping eight women who he either drugged or knew were too intoxicated to consent to sex.Jurors found 61-year-old Daniel Dorado guilty of 20 counts in connection with alleged rapes that happened in 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Some of the counts Doroado was found guilty of include two counts of rape of an unconscious person; two counts of rape of an intoxicated person; two counts of assault with intent to commit rape, sodomy oral copulation or sexual penetration of an unconscious or intoxicated person; two counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person with an unknown object; and two counts of sexual penetration of an intoxicated person with an unknown object.Dorado had faced 35 felony counts. The jury acquitted him on three counts, deadlocked on six counts, and have not yet reached verdicts on six remaining counts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A number of drivers who parked their cars in Little Italy this week got a nasty surprise when they tried to leave.Their cars were trapped because other people parked next to them on Beech Street."I can't figure out how the city has made such a mess of this street," said Andrea Silva, who lives downtown. The issue happened because the city restriped one side of the road from Front to Sixth Avenue as part of its downtown mobility plan. The idea is to move the parking spots away from the curbs toward the middle of the street. The area in between the cars and curb would then become a dedicated bike and scooter lane, separated by pillars. The city recently completed those lanes on J Street in the East Village.The problem on Beech Street arose because crews painted the new mid-street parking spots, but didn't add any signage, curb painting or other barriers to alert drivers not to park on the curb. That lead to people parking where they are used to, with others parking next to them in the new spots. "I'd definitely be mad," said John Shores, who was staying downtown. "I couldn't go anywhere until these people decide to move."City spokesman Anthony Santacroce said crews should have the work completed by early next week, with pillars keeping the cars from going up to the curb on Beech Street. He said workers will also put up work zone warning signs to alert drivers to not park on the side of the street. "During the short amount of time between painting of new parking spaces and the construction of the cycle tracks, cars were permitted to park in both the new spaces and the soon-to-be removed spaces along the curb," Santacroce said. "Although we understand that this could lead to some confusion, the intent was not to limit parking until the final phase of construction."The downtown mobility plan, in the first of three phases, connects the East Village to Little Italy, emphasizing alternate methods of transportation. 1967

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A longtime North Park business has been forced to shutter its doors due to the economic toll of the pandemic.A&B Sporting Goods has sat on University Ave. for 79 years. The business told ABC 10News that it thrives off of local youth sports, which have largely been canceled this year due to the coronavirus.Owner Greg Schloss, whose father and grandfather worked at the store before him, said he hadn't planned on closing shop, but could not keep the business going any longer."I've worked here 40 years. The neighborhood is driven by a lot of kids playing ball in this neigborhood.
