CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- In cities all over the country, drag queens are reading to kids and soon they'll be holding story time at the Otay Ranch library in Chula Vista. "I thought it was like one of the best things ever I wish I had a drag queen story time when I was younger," said "Strawberry Corncakes", a local artist who isn't taking part in the upcoming event, but understands very well why performers like her are striking a chord with families and kids across the country. "We're characters, we're cartoon characters brought to life. Who walks around with green eyes and green lips?" Along with the popularity though has come controversy. Pastor Amado Huizar is a father of four and says he's heard the events aren't just about reading books. "Teaching more about drag queens and what that's about which tends to lead to adult entertainment and that's where I think it's inappropriate as a dad as a husband."But the performers themselves say that's just not true. "There's no hidden agenda, we're not teaching them how to be drag queens we're not teaching them how to do anything except love themselves and read," said Corncakes. Huizar is trying to get the city leaders to talk to him and others and postpone the event in the meantime. And while opponents admit the event is optional, they have an issue with it being held at a public library. "I don't have to go but that doesn't mean I have to keep away from it either," said Huizar. The city of Chula Vista issued a statement that reads in part:"The Chula Vista Public Library welcomes everyone, and our extensive programming includes and reflects the diverse communities we serve. Hosting drag queens to read and relate with children sends a message of acceptance and tolerance."The drag queen story time is set for September 10 at 4 p.m. at the Otay Branch location. 1845

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A close family friend is speaking out after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed at a Chula Vista birthday party while defending his friend. Devin Griffiths was stabbed at a birthday party on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista on January 31. Reid Schneider, a friend of the family, says the party was first advertised on the social media platform Snapchat. Schneider says there was a doorman at the party as well as security guards. Witnesses say an argument between Devin’s friend and another teenager escalated into a fight outside. Devin, who was not involved in the original fight, intervened to help his friend when he was stabbed. "They started hurting Devin’s friend. Devin jumped in and he was beat down pretty bad and stabbed a few times," Schneider said. "He had some severe brain damage. I guess he was considered dead on scene and they kind of brought him back."RELATED: 15-year-old stabbed, killed protecting friend at Chula Vista birthday partyDevin underwent at least five surgeries within the first 12 hours, according to Schneider. He died on February 16 after being taken off life support. "There was a lot of times where we thought there was hope and and unfortunately there was too much damage," Schneider added. Police told 10News Tuesday that the teen “passed away with his family at his side.”A candlelight vigil was held for the teen Wednesday night on the Helix High campus, which is where Devin went to school. A GoFundMe has also been set up to help the family. "He was a kid that has gone through a lot more obstacles than a lot of other kids and adults as a 15-year-old. And he was striving. He was striving and he was going to make something of his life," Schneider said. RELATED: Friends of slain Helix High School student working to build permanent memorial for himPolice say the suspect group is believed to consist of eight to 15 men and women between the ages of 17 and 20. All the suspects are still at-large. Investigators believe witnesses may have used their cell phones to record the stabbing and are asking anyone with information or video to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call Chula Vista Police at 619-691-5178 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. 2269

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – More than 300 South Bay parents and students attended a school safety forum Monday night. The Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista police held the meeting at Chula Vista High School’s Performing Arts Center.“We certainly had some questions, we pinged our kids on what drills are being done on their campuses,” said Ricky Gallegos, who has two kids that attend high schools in the district.School officials and police assured parents that they practice and prepare for the unthinkable. But police were also candid about their limited resources. They have 10 school resource officers for 61 campuses and more than 51,000 students in Chula Vista.  Police asked parents for their help by reminding them to be involved with their kids and school community and to report whatever doesn't sound right. They also told them about the “P-3 Anonymous Tip App” which was launched within the past year. They said it there have been more than 400 tips made and law enforcement removed 13 guns from San Diego County Schools as a result of the app.“I think it’s petty cool, especially that it’s anonymous because I know some students are worried that they’ll talk to someone else,” Leira Gardea, a sophomore at Chula Vista High School said.Mental health was also a big topic of discussion. The Sweetwater Union High School District says they have 13 therapists and assured parents they do their best to disturbed or troubled youth the help they need.Chula Vista Police is holding another school safety forum next week. That one will be with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. 1631
