SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Huey Lewis and The News fans disappointed by the band’s canceled concerts have a chance to enjoy its hit songs at a musical, Heart of Rock and Roll, set to debut at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in September.Lewis, the band’s lead singer and namesake, announced Friday he was dealing with the sudden loss of his hearing."Two and a half months ago, just before a show in Dallas, I lost most my hearing," Lewis said in a message to his fans Friday. "Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can't hear music enough to sing."Lewis went on to explain that doctors believe he has the inner ear disorder Meniere's disease and said he should not perform until he improves."Needless to say, I feel horrible about this, and wish to sincerely apologize to all the fans who've already bought tickets and were planning to come see us," Lewis added. "[I] hope that one day soon I'll be able to perform again."Fans will be able to hear the 80s rocker’s hits in Heart of Rock and Roll, which runs September 6 through October 21. The show will feature the band’s hit songs, including “The Power of Love”, “Hip to Be Square”, and “If This Is It”. Lewis made the announcement with the help of Jimmy Kimmel.“Huey’s talent has drawn a brilliant team of theatrical visionaries together, led by the witty and imaginative director Gordon Greenberg, and they’ve made a musical that’s about as great a night out as I can imagine. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the rapid growth of plant-based meats across the country, businesses in San Diego have been expanding to meet demand.Plant Power, a San Diego-based vegan fast-food chain, announced it would be expanding to four new locations in Southern California in the next 16 months.Founded in 2016, Plant Power currently has locations in Ocean Beach, Encinitas, Redlands, SDSU and Long Beach. The new sites will be in Riverside, Orange County, the Inland Empire and another in San Diego, bringing it to a total of nine locations.Last month, they also debuted a new food truck in Los Angeles.“Consumers are enthusiastic about embracing a healthier, more sustainable take on traditional fast food,” said Mitch Wallis, President and Co-CEO of Plant Power Fast Food.“Fast food doesn’t have to be unhealthy for our bodies or bad for the planet. We’re here to demonstrate that there’s a better way,” he added.The plant-based craze hasn’t been contained just to vegan eateries. Supermarkets and other restaurants have begun offering meat substitutes, creating a fast-growing market for plant-based patties.Two companies have emerged as market leaders, Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods. But a San Diego company has also been positioning itself for success.Before the Butcher recently announced it has started selling its products nation-wide at stores like Ralphs and Lucky’s.Before the Butcher offers a line of plant-based meats called UNCUT. San Diego (KGTV)- After a second vote, a marijuana production facility is given the green light to move forward. Dozens of people, on both sides of the issue, were there as city leaders made their decision. Planning commissioners voted 4 to 2, giving business leaders the conditional use permit they needed to move ahead with plans. “We’re elated that the decision was in our favor,” says Jared Angell, CFO of THinC. “We followed all the rules and regulations and were glad to see that the planning commission could uphold that.”Business leaders were hoping for this decision after a deadlock vote of 3 to 3 last week. The over 21,000 square feet building on Ruffner Road will be used for the marijuana production site. During today’s vote, some planning commissioners asked that the building, moving forward, be more transparent by adding more windows. Commissioners also requested storage items be housed on the top level. Community members were concerned about the safety and future of their neighborhood, but business leaders say ThinC is committed to working with everyone.“We reached out to a lot of local business and community members, and we’ve been working with them to ensure that our business will not negatively affect them in any way,” says Angell. “It sends a strong message about the strength of community,” says community member Ping Wang. “I would be overjoyed for our community coming together, banning together, and supporting each other.”The site will be used for manufacturing and distributing marijuana products. As they are still in the planning stages, there is no word yet on when the facility will be in business. 1649

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With hospital beds running short, healthcare workers are trying to care for COVID-19 patients as efficiently as possible, using everything they’ve learned over the last nine months.Improvements in medications and methods have helped shorten hospital stays, said Sharp Memorial Hospital chief medical officer Dr. Tom Lawrie.In March, Sharp said COVID-19 patients stayed 12 days in the hospital on average. In November, the average dropped to 5.3 days. Other institutions have reported similar drops in the length of patient stays.COVID-19 patients now receive a three drug regimen: Remdesivir to fight the virus, a powerful steroid called dexamethasone to prevent the immune system from going haywire, and medications like heparin to reduce blood clotting.On top of that, hospitals have improved techniques like when to use ventilators.“Initially, we were in this conundrum where we weren't sure whether we should intubate patients early or whether we should wait a little later,” Dr. Lawrie said. “Over the last several months we've figured out a really good progression.”The progression now starts with a surprisingly simple technique called proning. Doctors around the country discovered that turning COVID-19 patients onto their stomachs rapidly improved breathing.Early research suggests proning may keep COVID patients off ventilators.“By putting people on their stomach in these positions and by proning them, you allow blood to get where the air is and therefore you get better oxygenation,” Dr. Lawrie said. “It makes the oxygen levels better. It makes their work of breathing better. It makes them feel better generally.”Proning helps move blood from one area of the lung to another where it can receive more oxygen. These regions are called West’s zones of the lung, named after research in the 1960’s by UC San Diego Professor Emeritus John B. West.Proning has been used as a medical intervention since 1976, when a doctor and a nurse in central Michigan published a study showing it could benefit patients in respiratory distress.Dr. Lawrie said there are also two outside factors contributing to shorter hospital stays across the country. The patients that are showing up now tend to be younger than early in the pandemic. Younger patients are more likely to respond well to treatment.There’s also evidence the virus has mutated over time, possibly making it more contagious but slightly less severe, Dr. Lawrie said.However, patients lately have been showing up faster than hospitals can care for them, threatening to overwhelm already crowded facilities. "If that happens, they won't have access to an ICU bed or to the medications that they need," he said. 2699
