WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is poised to revoke California's authority to set auto mileage standards, asserting that only the federal government has the power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy.Conservative and free-market groups have been asked to attend a formal announcement of the rollback set for Wednesday afternoon at Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington.Gloria Bergquist, spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said Tuesday that her group was among those invited to the event featuring EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.The move comes after the Justice Department recently opened an antitrust investigation into a deal between California and four automakers for tougher pollution and related mileage requirements than those sought by President Donald Trump. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Unlike in many parts of the world, Election Day in America isn’t a day most people get off from work or school, and it’s not for a lack of trying in the past.“There've been several efforts to make it a holiday, at least for the five previous Congresses, including this one,” said Matthew Weil, who runs The Elections Project at the Bipartisan Policy Center.Those proposed bills to make Election Day a federal holiday have gone nowhere though.Coincidentally, America also has one of the lowest voter participation rates in the developed world, which was about 56 percent in 2016.Over the years, though, some states have made it a state or civic holiday, most recently this year in Illinois and Virginia. In California, state law requires employers to give employees at least two paid hours to vote on Election Day. However, that’s not the case in most places.Weil said whether or not employers need to give you time to vote on Election Day, varies state by state.“In states that don't have robust voting by mail options, or early voting options, Election Day being the only option isn't good,” Weil said. “The good news is the trend has been toward expanding options over the past 10 years.”Those options include early voting, which millions of voters have already done in the 2020 election, including Kevin Jackson in Ohio.“Don’t just wait. Plan your vote,” Jackson said. “Get down here and get it done.”The key to moving forward, experts say, is for all states to offer as many opportunities to vote as possible. WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Monday that his administration is distributing 150 million Abbott rapid point-of-care tests in the coming weeks.Trump said 50 million tests will go to the nation’s most vulnerable communities, including 18 million for nursing homes, 15 million for assisted living facilities, 10 million for home health and hospice care agencies, and nearly 1 million for historically Black colleges and tribal nation colleges.The president said 100 million tests will be given to states and territories to support their efforts to reopen their economies and schools.“For example, the support my administration is providing would allow every state to, on a regular basis, test every teacher who needs it,” said Trump. “This continues our critical effort to use testing to protect high-risk communities.”Trump said the new Abbott rapid point-of-care tests are easy to use and return results in minutes. He said you can get a result in a maximum 15 minutes and no machine is needed to process them.After the president’s testing announcement, Admiral Brett Giroir spoke and actually demonstrated how the tests work.Giroir explained that the Abbott uses a nasal swab. To administer the test, the admiral said you put six drops of liquid on a piece of paper, swab the nostrils five times each, insert the swab into the test, twist three times, pull a piece of adhesive off and wait for the results.Giroir said it’s not a home test but can be administered in places like schools, churches or parking lots.As of Monday, Giroir said the U.S. had performed over 111 million tests for the novel coronavirus and the nation averages about 920,000 tests per day. He said the new tests will help increase the nation’s testing capabilities.The briefing comes a day before Trump is set to take on former Vice President Joe Biden in the first presidential debate of the 2020 election. One of the announced topics is the COVID-19 pandemic, which Biden has accused Trump of failing to adequately address.As of Monday afternoon, the COVID-19 death toll was near 205,000, with at least 7.1 million cases confirmed in the nation, according to Johns Hopkins University.
