OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — The Oceanside Unified School District voted Thursday to return students to an all-online learning format to prevent any coronavirus outbreaks, as cases surge throughout the state.Starting Monday, all elementary schools in the district will move to distance learning."With the recent rapid rise of COVID-19 cases, and our commitment to keep staff at home who are feeling sick, we’ve experienced a direct impact on staffing," an email from the district read late Thursday. "As a result of compounding staff shortages, we are unable to provide the amount of substitutes needed to effectively run our schools and classrooms. Additionally, we are not permitted under public health guidance to reopen our secondary campuses while we are in the most restrictive purple tier.The district said in addition to the move for elementary schools, it will delay the secondary return to in-person classes until San Diego County returns to the "red tier" of California's reopening guidelines.Secondary learning centers will continue to support students and the district's elementary enrichment program will serve students pending staffing. The store will be split into three units, with each one selling for per night, but the catch is it’s only open to residents of Deschutes County, Oregon, where the final Blockbuster Video remains.Blockbuster will provide snacks, soft drinks and pizza with the units. The units will also have access to a huge collection of Blockbuster’s stock.The units are available for up to four people, but can only be rented for one night per family.Following three nights of stays, the Oregon Blockbuster will allow visitors to see the units during regular business hours for a limited time.The Bend, Oregon, Blockbuster became the final location open of the mega video rental chain in 2018 after a pair of Alaska locations closed. Researchers have now quantified how much opioids are shortening US life spans.The researchers noted that the number of opioid overdose deaths are probably underestimated because of gaps in how death certificates are completed.From 2000 to 2015, death rates due to heart disease, diabetes and other key causes declined, adding 2.25 years to US life expectancy. But increases in deaths from Alzheimer's disease, suicide and other causes offset some of those gains. One California family narrowly survived two life-threatening situations less than 24 hours apart, but they just feel lucky to be alive.Carmen Edman described her harrowing escape from Malibu on November 8 as her family home was destroyed by wildfire."The fire was everywhere, " Carmen told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.The frantic moments came just a day after her daughter, Deseriee, survived a deadly mass shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, when a gunman burst into the bar with a handgun on November 7. By the time the gunfire stopped, 12 people were dead."I was in panic mode since Wednesday night -- since that phone call -- and stress levels were off the charts," Carmen Edman said.The Edman family got to safety, but their Malibu home burned to the ground."Two-near death experiences that you just don't expect," Deseriee Edman said."I'm trying to stay as strong as possible for my family and friends, and I'm trying to look at everything as positively as possible even though it's pretty hard to do so in these type of situations," she told the affiliate.The Edmans credit Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus with saving their family.Sgt. Helus was fatally shot when he responded to the call of a shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill.
