While political pundits pontificate about Tuesday’s election results, thousands of high school students around the country will have been hard at work forecasting their own.In a March Madness-style round-robin challenge, students pick states they think will go Democrat or Republican, filling out their own electoral map and entering it among thousands of others in the FANschool Challenge.“It’s something fun. It’s something different that the kids can kind of get a little competitive about,” said high school government and economics teacher Gerald Huesken. “[It’s] friendly academic competition.”Huesken helped start the challenge along with two other colleagues four years ago as the country was gearing up for the 2016 election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Several of his students correctly predicted the Trump victory despite polls reflecting a different outcome. Back then, he says, it was only something for his class to do as they take what they learn in their civics and apply it to real-life situations, but now, it has exploded into an online format used by hundreds, if not thousands, of teachers across the country, says Huesken.“Right now, we’re looking at the different data from NBC, ABC, stuff like that [to guide our knowledge],” said Huesken. “It’s saying it’s looking pretty good for Joe Biden, but we thought that going into 2016.”Students get to draft states in a fantasy football format. They then learn about what is important to their voters, research news articles and polls, and then predict what they think will happen in 2020 based on what they find, putting together their minds and entering the bracket in a nationwide challenge for prizes.“I have both Florida and Ohio going Republican this year and giving Trump some votes,” said Mason, a junior in Huesken’s class who did not want to use his last name. “I also have Michigan going to Biden, leading him to a pretty comfortable victory.”Mason says the challenge has taught him how different regions of the United States approach different issues and how voting patterns change among different demographics.“If you asked me in 20 words or less why do you teach this course, it’s really because I feel like high school students, whether or not they’re voters, look at our political system and our political institutions and feel like they have no agency,” said Chris Stewart, a social studies teacher at a high school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Stewart helped start the challenge alongside Huesken and used it to helped formulate his fantasy politics course that he only offers during election years as a way to make the electoral process more relatable to many students who are not able to engage in the political process because they are not old enough to vote. 2764

With emotions still raw days after a deadly school shooting in Florida, one Ohio family is fighting back against what they think is an unfair punishment.Beth Mertel says one of her son's peers brought a toy gun to Greenbriar Middle School in Parma on Feb. 8, and pointed it at her son, Joey."He says he doesn't want to be the snitch," Mertel said. "They're 11 years old. They're kids. They're trying to find their place with their friends too."Mertel says the Parma City School District suspended the student who brought the toy gun, along with three other students, including Joey, for knowing about it but not telling an adult about it.The district stands behind the discipline, saying the three additional students were punished under a part of the Student Handbook labeled "Withholding Information."Mertel's concern is with the severity of the punishment, not the rule she admits her son should have followed."No matter how much I disagree with the suspension, you still should have said something," said Beth.Mertel says Wednesday's tragedy in Florida is an important teaching moment."I said [to Joey] you need to go home and turn on the news," said Beth. "You need to watch this, you need to understand this."The district tells us that suspension will stay on Joey's internal school record through middle school and into high school. Beth says it's a hefty punishment that falls short of teaching the lesson she says is worth learning."Whenever you see something, you have to tell somebody," said Mertel. "That's the only way this is going to be taken care of." 1605

  

When you hear “self-care,” you might think of mani-pedis, relaxing facials, or soothing massages. But with millions of people struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic, practicing “financial self-care” is important, too.Rachelle Beazley of Detroit was working in sales for a food broker when COVID-19 first hit back in March.“I was lucky I didn’t lose my job – my full-time job – but I did lose my three side hustles,” said Beazley.She was a dog-sitter, an overnight nanny, and taught workshops on making hand-knitted blankets.“I think immediately with the pandemic, it was a strain. Like, oh my gosh. I’m not going to have all these financial streams coming in – this extra revenue,” Beazley recalled.She’d just started working with Ann Arbor financial therapist Lindsay Bryan-Podvin – who advises people dealing with financial anxiety to practice five steps of “financial self-care.”Start Emergency FundBryan-Podvin said the first step is starting an emergency fund – even if you’re only adding a few dollars at a time.“I know a lot of viewers are going to be like, ‘Lindsay, I don’t even have time to think about an emergency fund. I’m just trying to make ends meet.’ Any time you can scrap away ten-dollars here, 30-dollars there, it again just gives you a little bit of peace of mind that if something were to happen, you’re not totally at zero in that bank account,” she said.Bryan-Podvin advised Beazley to add up her essential expenses and multiply by three – making that amount her new emergency savings goal. Anything over that would go towards paying off debt.Insurance, Will & TrustHer number two recommendation is to set up life insurance – if you don’t have any already – along with a will and trust.This is particularly important if you are married and have kids in the home under 18.“I would say get your life insurance first, and then get your will and trust in place,” Bryan-Podvin said.“That 20, 30, 40-dollars a month can provide out a benefit of anywhere from a quarter-million-dollars to a million dollars. So that again is that peace of mind.”Explore a Side HustleThe third step is to explore a side hustle or new ways to make some extra money.“A lot of us might be taking jobs that we might be over-qualified for, or we might be picking up some odd jobs here and there just to make ends meet,” said Bryan-Podvin.She said you need to remember that the situation you’re in now will get better. “Going back to that mantra of this is temporary,” she explained.If you’re looking for ideas, think of the sectors of the economy that are doing well right now.Food delivery services, tutoring, even COVID-19 compliance consultants – a good opportunity for furloughed health care workers Bryan-Podvin explained.Give To OthersIf you are one of the fortunate ones still working during this health crisis, Bryan-Podvin said you may be experiencing Financial Survivor’s Guilt.So, her number four step with financial self-care is to give to others -- volunteer, donate, help someone in need. Even small gestures can go a long way in lending support while also making yourself good knowing you’re doing something to help during this pandemic.“if you’re in a financially stable situation, practicing some gratitude, saying I’m thankful that I have some income coming in and how can I give back to my community in other ways,” Bryan-Podvin said.Lean On CommunityHer fifth suggestion for practicing financial self-care is to lean on community – whether it’s taking turns meal prepping or entertaining the kids in your “pandemic pod.”“It’s about opening up your house safety to a handful of other people who you know are already practicing safe behaviors to get some additional help.”Back to Rachelle Beazley.She took the money she’d previously spent on gas and dining out and saved enough for her emergency fund and paid off two loans.Then, she leaned into a side hustle!She started a new business hosting virtual wellness retreats for women.“I’m not sure if my parachute is going to open just yet but I have to believe in what I’m passionate about,” said Beazley.Beazley quit her day job on September 1, 2020, to start working on her business – Aloe and Alchemy.Her next virtual retreat is October 17.As for financial self-care– Lindsay Bryan-Podvin said you can re-order her five steps to suit where you are in your life.This story was first reported by Alicia Smith at WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan. 4423

  

While many have people lost their jobs over the past few months, for some people, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a scenario that made it easier for them to find work. Lashaunda Garner is one of those people.“In my situation I was out of work for 16 years,” said Garner.After nearly two decades, Garner found a work-from-home job at the start of the pandemic.“As soon as I got the job, I was like ‘oh my gosh, I can do something past my disability,’” she added.Garner suffers from severe PTSD and anxiety, which makes it difficult to work in a traditional work environment.“In my case, there are certain sounds, certain smells and things that trigger your depression and when I am at home, I can limit those things,” said Garner.While work-from-home options were previously limited. During forced business closures and stay at home orders, the U.S. saw a surge in work-from-home jobs, especially call center positions.“The pandemic struck, and all of the call centers had to send their agents home. This was worldwide. This was something that never happened before,” said Alan Hubbard. “Some of the agents that were sent home in India, the Philippines and China didn’t have the physical infrastructure in order to do those jobs.”Hubbard is with the National Telecommuting Institute (NTI), which helps people with disabilities work from home. In Garner’s case, it had already helped her setup a home office and everything needed to work from home when the surge happened.“You hear people say, ‘you aren’t your job’ right, but for a lot of people, that is how they identify themselves,” said Hubbard. “That they are working, that they are productive. That is the opportunity that we try to provide.”Garner is just one example out of many people with disabilities who have been able to find work-from-home jobs and thrive in that environment over the past few months.Since the beginning of the pandemic, NTI has had a significant increase in companies come to them for help finding workers. They have four times as many available jobs to fill and have actually been able to place nearly 200 people in work-from-home jobs in the last six weeks. When, typically, it places about 50 people a month.“That is what the pandemic has done. It has opened up this opportunity for these folks,” said Hubbard.Hubbard is currently working with a dozen companies looking to hire another 240 people.Lashaunda is thriving in her current role and hoping her story inspires not just other people with disabilities, but the millions looking for work right now.“Do the best you can and fight for what you want,” said Garner. “It may take you, hopefully not 16 years, but you will end up getting it.” 2681
