(AP) — A 6-year-old girl was struck in the head by what police say was a celebratory gunfire bullet during New Year's Eve parties in Northern California.The East Bay Times reports the child, who has not been identified, is in stable condition at a hospital Tuesday.Police say the girl was shot sometime before 2 a.m. during a family party in her East Oakland backyard.Investigators say the bullet was apparently fired into the air from another location nearby. (KGTV) --The man accused of crashing into a car in Oceanside while under the influence, killing three people and injuring three others appeared in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. Mason Fish is accused of driving under the influence during the February 5 crash. Oceanside Police say he ran a red light on South Coast Highway at Oceanside Boulevard and crashed his Toyota Tacoma into a Mazda, killing three woman and injuring three others. Petra Arango, 40, of Oceanside; Rufina Rodriguez, 74, of Fallbrook; and 56-year-old Eloina Arango, of Mexico, were identified as the victims. A 13-year-old girl, who neighbors and friends call Kelly, was ejected from the vehicle and seriously injured. Aquilino Arango Ojeda, 82, of Fallbrook; and 43-year-old Rey David Velasco Herrera, of Oceanside, were in the front seats of the vehicle and also seriously injured. (KGTV) - Whale watchers enjoyed a rare encounter off the Southern California coast Monday: four orcas teaming up to prey on dolphins. “It’s very, very rare,” said Oceanside Whale Watching manager Carla Mitroff. The company had a boat full of whale watchers off San Clemente when the orcas appeared. Boat Captain Shane and staff biologist Lauren Turley captured the moment. “They were thrilled beyond thrilled,” Mitroff said of the passengers. “It’s the holy grail of whale watching.” The Eastern Tropical Pacific orcas pass through Southern California after a stop in Mexico, Mitroff said. The whale watching team hasn’t seen orcas in more than a year. Monday, the orca pod preyed on two baby dolphins as the mother tried to fight the killer whales. It's not unusual for orcas to eat larger mammals.“The diet of orcas depends to some extent on what is available where they live,” according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. One ecotype of orcas in the Pacific Northwest eats fish, while other ecotypes eat marine mammals and squid. Killer whales are “considered a top predator, eating near the top of the food chain.” 1171
